We've recently returned from a cruise. It seemed like everyone on the ship was American. We had lots of chats with very nice people but were horrified to hear so many pleasant, apparently educated people who thought Trump was wonderful! I actually had to walk away once as the person extolling his virtues was so absolutely impervious to the fact that there is an alternative view of him!
In another conversation with a very nice lady who was a head teacher and district supervisor of other schools that guns were fine because 'everyone had training in them'. Speechless!

What next from Trump's America?

According to the BBC News last night, children of Mexican migrants are being separated from their parents and kept in cages
On Tuesday, the UN called on the US to "immediately halt" the separations.
The UN Human Rights Office's spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani criticised the policy on Tuesday and said that several hundred children, some as young as one, appeared to have been affected.
US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has defended separating migrant children from their parents at the US border.

New York Times reported that about 700 children - including 100 under the age of four - had been separated from the adults they were travelling with after entering the US.
trisher. Having worked within the prison system for many years I do know the difference. Safer than living on the streets at the very least. No matter what you may think of Trump the parents are at fault here for putting their children at risk. They are most certainly not responsible adults.
Can anyone advise me how to register my fervent opposition to a visit from Trump, especially after this last outrage?
I need to say that I don't use, "social media" (I call 'em all Twitbook and leave well alone!)
I’m appalled that some on here seem to be trying to justify Trump’s action.
Working in ‘the prison system’ ???
I wonder when we will hear that these children are being tattooed?
Saw the news this morning heard the children crying for there mummy’s and daddy’s, broke my heart. Such a cruel man and government will no one stand up to to that monster.
As has been remarked, the whole scenario smacks of fascism. Heaven help the children, and also the rest of the world whilst this regime is in power. As has also been remarked, many Americans think he can do no wrong.
Heaven knows where all this will lead.
You have to smile at some comments on this topic. Craftycat calls him an ‘obnoxious individual’ yet is then quite blasé about the possibility of someone ‘bumping him off’. Strange how we consider our own views to be the ‘right’ ones!
There are 3 special, secret camps for babies and very young children according to Radio 4. That is even more appalling.
Pity someone didn’t do the ‘right’ thing and bump Hitler off before he slaughtered hundreds of thousands of people directly and indirectly.
So presumable as well as separating children from parents he is breaking up sibling groups.
Are there no depths so deep this disgusting man will not go deeper?
How many of these children will be traumatised for life by this unnecessary and brutal treatment.
I have been trying to imagine the effect on my DGC, 8 & 11, suddenly being separated from their parents and each other and kept in caged warehouses and expected to sleep on concrete floors. It is Guantanamo style treatment for children and will probably breed the next generation of anti-American terrorists.
Jane10 - therein lies the problem.
Two (or two thousand) wrongs do not make a right. It simply doesn't stand that wrongs in the past are a reason to keep schtuum now - all the more reason to protest against this vile man and his vile policies with the benefit of hindsight. Leader of the free world?? I don't think so.
Just on the news - Trump about to stop the practice.
Maybe cancelling his visit would be an insult, but lets face it he insults people on a daily basis, so why should we care. Ban him from entering our Country, let him know what it feels like. I am so angry at his appalling behaviour.
Strikes me Trump will do what he wants and ignore the out cries our governments cry shame on you but do you see them doing anything NOT! ! Stupid as it sounds keep the yanks from our borders how long before they change their tune?
One reason the UK Government will say nowt is that after Brexit, they'll need the US like never before..... It's one of the reasons some people voted Remain.
Trump does this all the time. It’s his modus operandi. He goes in hard to demonstrate what he ‘could’ do then pulls back. Sends a message to the Mexican government & families thinking of crossing the border illegally - a very important word here.
Where are the Trump supporting evangelical Christians in all of this?
The Christians in the USA appear to be divided on the subject varian, as the video link url below shows. CNN news today interviewed people of all ages, and across many parts of America, to ask them for their views. It's staggering to hear their outage and anger, not that the children are being incarcerated, but that their parents have "broken into America and put their children at risk and are now making America look bad". It makes depressing viewing.

I agree Jane10. Prior to the US elections there was lots of support for Trump from the Ameriion the cruise ships. In fact we only ever met one couple who had anything good to say about Obama. We were actually on a cruise around the US during the election and I can't say I was surprised by the result. For those that know the demographics of the US, it's only the North Eastern coastal areas and Western states that are liberal. The whole swathe in the middle and southern states are deeply conservative, suspicious of outsiders and narrow minded. That's how Trump got elected. Like it or not that's America. Deeply troubling from the gun culture to the treatment of refugees and migrants. Heart breaking to hear the little ones crying. But there's a lot there that agree with him However hard it is for us to understand.
I must admit that although I don't like the man as a person, I have been prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt as I agree with him on some points he has made.
This time however, he has gone too far. I suspect this situation will quickly be resolved.
Like Jane10 we have spoken to Americans on cruises, and a lot of them have said that the US does have a huge problem with Mexicans, a lot of whom are drug dealers, entering the States illegally.
There is a lot of support for him in trying to stop this illegal immigration, but separating small children from their parents, of course is totally unacceptable.
Although I do not agree with young children being separated from their parents, these people are illegal immigrants and there should be a very quick turn around to see them deported. They have probably heard through the grapevine that their families will be separated on entry to the States but they are still willing to put their children through that experience so the blame is not entirely with the border police.
If you or I want to move abroad, we do not make ourselves a criminal by crossing a border illegally and expect the other country's taxpayers to pay to house and feed us. No country should allow people to think they can do this otherwise it would encourage millions more to do the same. I would hope that we would apply by the normal channels to see if the country we are interested in emigrating to will accept us because they need our skills. Countries such as the USA and those in Europe have struggled over the centuries to make their countries successful and I do not think it is right that citizens of other countries should just think that they are entitled to a piece of it when they ( and their governments) have made little effort to make their own countries a safe and prosperous place to live. The whole of South and Central America cannot move to the USA and likewise the whole of Africa and the Middle East cannot move to Europe.
quizqueen is absolutely right.
OK they may be in the country illegally but why not keep them all together?
sunseeker I think the policy is that anyone who has entered the country illegally is a 'criminal' and is detained in prison - however, they cannot send the children to the prisons where their parents are incarcerated so they hold the children in cages instead - in effect they are also prisoners, even babies and toddlers.
As most Americans are descendants of immigrants and the only true Americans are the indigenous peoples this seems a very rigid and cruel way of dealing with those who would wish to enter the country.
May 28th 2018: Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a new “zero tolerance” policy earlier this month (May) that included imposing criminal penalties meant to deter Central American families from trying to cross the border illegally.
If a mother or father is with a child when apprehended for the crime of illegal entry, the minor must be taken from the parent.
I do understand that proper immigration processes should be followed but surely holding families together in an immigration centre is not beyond the capabilities of a country as supposedly 'civilised' and rich as the USA?
