Professor Vernon Bogdanor, an expert (if we are still able to use that word) on the UK constitution, writes-

"The truth is that the dilemma, created by the people via the referendum vote of 2016 and again in the general election of 2017, can only be resolved by the people through another referendum. Leavers oppose a further referendum which, they say, disrespects democracy. But a further referendum is the only democratic solution – as the Brexiteers themselves recognised in 2016, when they feared the remainers would triumph."

Is it true that Theresa May simply is unable to change her mind ?Changing her mind and calling a second referendum would serve democracy and the national interest better than ploughing her same old unproductive furrow.

But we were told by our then prime minister that it would be a ' Once in a lifetime referendum'! If we have another, and maybe yet another until we get the 'right' answer, how on earth could anyone EVER believe anything that any politician of whatever colour ever says ever again!!! It's difficult enough as it is, and has turned us into a nation of cynics, but to blatantly go back on the word of the leader of the country, made in parliament, would be for many be a lie too far and make every political utterance meaningless!!

Cameron had absolutely no right to make that 'promise', nellie, one parliament/government cannot bind the next, or subsequent parliaments. That is how our constitution works.

Nor had he any right to promise that the result of the referendum would be binding as that was a decision that only parliament could make. It didn't make it; the Referendum Act provides only for an advisory referendum.He was exceeding his powers under the constitution. It is parliament that is sovereign, not the 'government'. Of course, parliament should have picked him up on this but I sometimes wonder if MPs have enough knowledge of the constitution to be able to be on their guard against the government taking more power than they are entitled to.

The people calling for another referendum are asking for a vote on whether or not to accept the final deal. Which is different from the 2016 one which just asked 'stay' or 'leave'?

He hasn't needed to, Joelsnan; he has studied the British constitution and constitutional law. It's an academic subject. He is well qualified to give an expert opinion. He would have gained nothing at all to add to his expertise in the field if he had set a toe out of academia.

I'm sure you're right maisieD, but Parliament agreed! No one objected to the terms, so D.C. wasn't wholly to blame! Why didn't parliament object?! why wasn't illegality pointed out? It wasn't, it was agreed on all sides like the Scottish referendum, and has to stand if any integrity is to be maintained.

You may well think that, but I think received wisdom is that it would have been a whole lot better to have “nipped” Nazism “in the bud” in Germany e.g.in 1933 rather than wait until Hitler was firmly established in power.

That feeling exists here in the UK, too, MawBroon in relation to the way that the UK seems to be moving to the right.

No, I don't. I think that that has been part of our problem for a long time. Reading Politics, Philosophy and Economics gives a theoretical grounding but these kids go from school (usually private) to uni and then straight into 'politics' without any experience of life outside politics. It's absurd.

On the other hand, the study of Constitutional law and the Constitution doesn't require any experience of life outside politics; it would contribute nothing at all to the sum of the student's knowledge of the Constitution or constitutional law. Or the expert's knowledge.

They didn't. They passed a bill for an advisory referendum. Cameron only started making his silly and unconstitutional promises after the deed was done.

I've already said that he should have been pulled up on it and that parliament was very lax in that matter. But it doesn't alter the fact that he had no right to do it and that he could not bind successor parliaments

D.C. made it quite clear in the H of C that the result would be first past the post, made it quite clear the the result would be respected, made once in a lifetime crystal clear. No one objected because they all arrogantly thought that remain would win and they didn't want leavers jumping up and down calling for another referendum if it was a close run thing. What's the point of an advisory referendum? Why ask people what they think when, if it's different from you you'll ignore it anyway! How arrogant is that? apart from a complete waste of time and taxpayers money?!!

Hitler brought work and pride back to a defeated nation. Before his full intentions were made clear pre-w a r he was extremely popular, not only in Germany but other countries including here for getting Germany moving again economically and emotionally. The crushing of Germany and the huge financial reparations after the defeat of WW1 set a resentful vengeful nation on the road to WW11. Perhaps Brussels should bear this in mind when threatening smaller nations, the treatment of Greece being a good example!
