If there was another EU referendum...

Would those who voted Leave still do so? And why? I am genuinely trying to look outside my Remain bubble, but the logic of Leave still continues to elude me. I am asking Gransnet because apparently older people were most likely to vote to Leave.

Allygran1 Mon 06-Aug-18 14:43:28

MostlyHarmless a majority vote is a majority. Two Elections.

Allygran1 Mon 06-Aug-18 14:44:57

Bridget why would a no deal Brexit make us "all losers"?

Greta Mon 06-Aug-18 14:46:10

Mostlyharmless, we do know what Brexit means. We have been told: Brexit means Brexit.

Bridgeit Mon 06-Aug-18 14:47:17

Your assumptions & take on my comments are pretty much wide of the mark ,Ally, especially the patriotic bit ! For a knowledgeable person you still have a lot to learn about human interaction, this is not a criticism by the way, just an observation ?

mostlyharmless Mon 06-Aug-18 14:50:57

Ally the Referendum gave a slim majority but was based on lies and corruption. The General Election proved nothing as the Tories lost their majority and became a minority government.
I repeat, what are you afraid of in a People’s Vote?

Allygran1 Mon 06-Aug-18 14:58:43

Mostly. Can't you see what the people of this Country are afraid of. It's anarchist's, riding on the back of the biggest revolution this Country has seen since the Civil War.

The people of this country by majority Democratic vote have rebelled against the EU. It is a Democratic ballot box revolution!! The direction of this Country will take us into the future not the past that is where the EU is the past. A trading organisation with machinations of power, inventing itself into a Nation without Country. An organisation of it's time, a time long past.

Those against the revolution, are not the remain voters, they are self interest groups as I have said on other post's. They are anarchistic mostly, because they are not offering an alternative mandate, or Government, for the next General Election, they are seeking to overthrow the two Democratic votes for their own self interest. Anarchy being one of those in my view. Destabilisation of this Country. Far left/communist groups masquerading as something else.

As for this old chestnut what is Brexit! READ sorry to shout! Read about what we are escaping from, look to the EU. It is their problems we are escaping from, these are well recorded. This is a collapsing system, bringing down 27 Country's, destroying their traditions, their economic and social structures all crumbling, even Germany is not exempt.

That is what Brexit is Freedom!

Joelsnan Mon 06-Aug-18 15:01:13

Why do people try to justify this vote through the 'lies and corruption' scenario?
Were your views and voting decision swayed by the propoganda pepetrated by each side in the run up to the referendum? If it was, i would like to know how.
My decision was formed years ago. I paid no attention whatsoever to the rubbish from both sides and everyone I know did the same.

Allygran1 Mon 06-Aug-18 15:05:16

Bridgeit, your observations are your right. As are mine.

Thank you for the knowledgable.

Human interaction is a two way Street Bridgeit. It's give and take. It's action and reaction and most of all it is tenuous, especially on line.

Allygran1 Mon 06-Aug-18 15:06:08

Well said Joelsnan.

nigglynellie Mon 06-Aug-18 15:09:58

I don't think we're a laughing stock at all, I think some countries, perhaps secretly, actually admire us for our bravery in standing up to these 'rubber stamped' (in other words, unelected) Commissioners. I know our many Dutch friends feel nothing but admiration for the UK being courageous enough to challenge these arrogant bullies. French friends are dismayed, not because we want to leave, but because they feel rightly or wrongly that we are deserting them when we did offer some sort of brake in this institution, and now of course we won't be there. To belong to an association that you effectively can't leave no matter what, is exactly what happened to the countries of Easter Europe and lasted for about as long before their populations rose up and broke away from the tyranny of the USSR. Of course people with vested interests will move heaven and earth to destroy brexit, but most of us ordinary folk don't have vested interests, but what we do have is a dislike of bullies, being run by people other our own government, seeing other countries who are now so reliant on the bully boys that they are just vessel states and have to tow the Brussels line, the lack of transparency, the waste of money, particularly moving the parliament once a month -why??!!!!!) and more besides. The vested interest folk don't give a toss about anyone else, no matter where they come from, too busy getting their noses in the trough!! It's a dictatorship, a closed shop, and to be completely entangled by and to have no escape from is actually quite frightening not only for us but the other countries of Europe. Of course we all want a close relationship in every respect, but please try to understand - we DON'T want to be GOVERNED by you!

mostlyharmless Mon 06-Aug-18 15:16:11

So which Brexit do you want ally? Which did you vote for?
Did you understand WTO rules before you voted? Did you know that USA trade deal will force us to accept TTIP which will lead to American companies buying into NHS contracts before you voted?
Even the most hard core Brexiteers such as Mogg are hedging their bets by moving investments to EU countries rather than risk everything in the U.K. ? Not exactly a ringing endorsement for Brexit from him.
And what about the Irish border? No solution for the border problem has yet been found.
Lots of cut’n’paste waffle but no answers I see ally.

nigglynellie Mon 06-Aug-18 15:16:55

Like you Jn, my views on the EU have been formed with trepidation over the years. None of the propaganda in either campaign persuaded me or DH one way or the other. We based our vote on the above and that was it!

nigglynellie Mon 06-Aug-18 15:17:52

Previous post that is! Oh for an edit button!!!

petra Mon 06-Aug-18 15:23:10

Greta
if, in years to come Brexit turns out to be a big mistake
I notice you put 'if'
I would turn you statement around and say:
When, Brexit turns out to be a success and the veil is lifted, can you imagine how angry the population will be when they realise we have been shafted since 1973.

mostlyharmless Mon 06-Aug-18 15:36:50

We’ll all be dead before “Brexit turns out to be a success”.

Pound sterling slumps on new Government warnings of 'no deal' Brexit. The currency was down 0.36 per cent against the dollar at $1.2959, close to an 11-month low.

More evidence of the mythical "brexit bonus"?

petra Mon 06-Aug-18 15:48:48

So the Gov.uk website is lying together with HSBC. Nooooo?
You have to laugh, don't you, soon be over ?

Doctors could qualify more quickly after Brexit to help solve the staffing shortages in the NHS, a health minister has said. Britain's membership of the EU means medical students have to undergo five years of training before they are registered as doctors.

But after Brexit Britain will be free to set its own rules - with ministers considering options which would allow some students to qualify in less time. Stephen Barclay, a Health Minister who voted for Brexit at the referendum in 2016, said the NHS could gain advantages from leaving the EU. But patients’ groups said the proposals could threaten safety.

Note to self - if in future you need a doctor, make sure he or she was qualified before 2019.

Bridgeit Mon 06-Aug-18 15:54:40

Polliadh, I think I may have posted to you before, but I will ask again have you genuinely been helped in your understanding of why (older) people voted the way they did ? Has reading the comments & opinions of GNetters helped your understanding will you be writing an article on your findings etc etc I would like to know, there is nothing worse than being asked to offer an opinion & getting no feed back ?

Joelsnan Mon 06-Aug-18 16:04:01

varian
Re doctors
UK doctors have always and probably will always require a minimum 5years teaining. Whereas doctors from many European countries only require 4years minimum.
If you received tratment from say a Spanish doctor, would you refuse it?
Incidentally most of the best doctors come out of worldwide medical schools who were either built by the Brits. Or taught the British medical syllabus.

Greta Mon 06-Aug-18 16:37:31

Allygran: That is what Brexit is Freedom!

Yes, Allygran, after Brexit our British companies would have the freedom to manufacture flammable sofas again.

Joelsnan Mon 06-Aug-18 16:44:01

Greta
Would they?
The furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety Regulations) 1988/1989, 1993 and 2010
Is a UK not EU derived regulation.

lemongrove Mon 06-Aug-18 17:03:30

There is nothing to fear but fear itself ( to steal a quotation)
Thankfully there will be less than a year to go before we leave the EU ( although I sense GN will play host to the fearful for quite some time.)

lemongrove Mon 06-Aug-18 17:04:25

Flammable sofas indeed grin dear oh dear.

crystaltipps Mon 06-Aug-18 17:12:46

We’ve always had freedom - we have been an equal member of the EU and helped decide any rules applicable to all and the freedom ( about 4% of our laws) to decide our own domestic policy. How will This mythical new freedom be demonstrated ? It’s seems theEU bashers still believe we were held in some vice like grip by the EU even though we are an equal member. If you ask how will our lives improve no one can tell us apart from talking about “freedom” which means not a jot. Apart from freedom to make our own mess which have been managing very nicely to do.
