Oopsadaisy53 Mon 23-Jul-18 14:21:54

Good for him.

I don’t agree with the death penalty, I don’t believe that we humans ever have the right to take human life. However, I do think people should be punished for the crimes they commit, and since the USA have requested extradition so that these people can be tried for their crimes, I believe they should be extradited to the USA and they should answer for their crimes. Personally I think if found guilty they should be locked away and never released as they are clearly never going to be safe back on the streets. And (genuine) life imprisonment in America would be a very unpleasant experience, which these particular criminals are fully deserving of in my opinion.

MaizieD Mon 23-Jul-18 15:03:36

Tricky one, isn't it?

I agree with maddyone. If they were to be extradited to a state which doesn't have the death penalty and imprisoned for life that would be fine.

I'm not at all religious but I can't help thinking of the line 'Vengeance is mine' said the Lord. I don't recall that He then delegates it to human agents.

Bridgeit Mon 23-Jul-18 15:17:50

Nor should we, they made their choice,so should face the consequences.

Anniebach Mon 23-Jul-18 15:23:48

I cannot support the death penalty , but it must be life

mimiro Mon 23-Jul-18 15:30:39

they would be extradited to a federal prison.and tried by the federal gov't ,who do use the death penalty.our prisons are overcrowded .
we have plenty of people from other countries in the prisons, jails, don't need anymore.

suzied Mon 23-Jul-18 15:33:10

We haven't had the death penalty for over 50 years in this country quite rightly. The state killing someone brings you down to their level and there is always the potential for error. I don't have a problem with them being locked up for life in a humane but austere environment, where they cannot infect anyone with their hate. Making them into martyrs may inflame the misguided supporters.

sodapop Mon 23-Jul-18 15:52:20

I'm with OldMeg on this one, they have no regard for human life, why should theirs be any different.
I must admit to having a few qualms about the fact we are buck passing.

MissAdventure Mon 23-Jul-18 15:54:07

The death penalty is fine by me.

Anniebach Mon 23-Jul-18 15:58:42

We must never support the death penalty again. saving the lives of these two men means saving the lives of innocent people

Oldwoman70 Mon 23-Jul-18 16:06:15

It's a difficult one - I don't normally support the death penalty but their crimes were so heinous that in this case I feel it may be the only solution. If they are imprisoned for life they would try to "convert" others to their twisted form of Islam, others who may not be serving life and could then be released into society to carry out attacks. The only way to avoid that would be to put them in solitary confinement, which, of course, would lead to claims of inhuman treatment.

mimiro Mon 23-Jul-18 16:08:17

some states have the dp,some don't.some have it but have a moratorium, which have been in effect for decades in some places.
not religious but
was on the fence until bundy came along.it hit very close to home and after he told his lawyer to add a "0" to the the 36 known victims.no prob jumped off the fence. .like most of his type he most likely wouldnt have survived in prison.he was attacked a couple times by other prisoners.

dp not a matter of
deterring crime,it really doesn't,it's a matter of stopping specific criminals.

OldMeg Mon 23-Jul-18 16:08:54

Are you suggesting these two are innocent Annie or that sometimes innocent people have been hanged?

The truth is they probably will go down for life, but I hope they’re —wetting themselves— a big upset by this development.

OldMeg Mon 23-Jul-18 16:09:27

Why won’t my iPad strike through anymore?

Anniebach Mon 23-Jul-18 16:19:38

Old Meg, innocent people have been hanged , we cannot open the door to the death penalty again.

Baggs Mon 23-Jul-18 16:21:44

...(genuine) life imprisonment in America would be a very unpleasant experience, which these particular criminals are fully deserving of in my opinion

Can this not be seen as "a fate worse than death"?

Just asking. I'm not saying I'm in favour of death penalties but if prisoners are going to be treated like dirt rather than rehabilitated then, personally, I'd rather be dead.

KatyK Mon 23-Jul-18 16:21:58

I wish they wouldn't refer to them as The Beatles angry

mimiro Mon 23-Jul-18 16:32:26

true life sentence- rehabilitated
no such thing

Grandma70s Mon 23-Jul-18 16:37:11

Death penalty is morally wrong in all circumstances. Answering violence with more violence is a primitive reaction. Life imprisonment, yes.

I am surprised at Sajid Javid.

Baggs Mon 23-Jul-18 16:38:47

True, mimiro, but one could rehabilitate one's ideas and way of thinking in prison, I suppose.

But, yes, I take your point. My point is that true life imprisonment is as bad as being put to death. You might as well be dead as not have proper human freedom to come and go, it could be argued.

Baggs Mon 23-Jul-18 16:39:37

as never have that freedom.

Baggs Mon 23-Jul-18 16:40:30

I'm saying that actual life imprisonment could be regarded as more cruel than ending someone's life.
