Has anyone else noticed the striking similarity between the attitudes of the Tory and Labour party managers to their own members who actually want to discuss brexit, the most important issue of our times?

What is going on in our so-called democracy?

"Jeremy Corbyn faced a growing revolt over Brexit today as Labour MPs and activists stepped up demands for a party conference vote on whether to back a second referendum. The call was galvanised by a national poll claiming 63 per cent of party members want a vote on whether to accept the final terms of Theresa May’s negotiations with the EU or stay in the EU.

Only eight per cent were against the idea, according to the YouGov survey commissioned by the People’s Vote group which was set up by opponents of Brexit."

The Conservative Party has banned one of its own MPs from advertising events at the party's annual conference in Birmingham, where he was due to back proposals for a second EU referendum. Tory MP Phillip Lee is to speak at two events debating calls for a "People's Vote" on the final EU deal.

One is to be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, Brindley Place, and the other is at the Novotel Hotel, on Broad Street. The October conference will include hundreds of similar meetings, known as "fringe events", and they will be advertised in a directory distributed to everyone attending the conference, including party activists and journalists.

But the party has said that it is refusing to include a listing for these two events. No explanation has been given.

If you are a Gransnetter who is a member of either the Labour Party or the Conservative Party and you care about the integrity of our democracy, what are you going to do about this?

Smileless2012 Thu 23-Aug-18 19:57:51

I am not a member of any political party and as someone who cares about the integrity of our democracy I'm going to hope that good sense will prevail and there wont be another peoples vote.

We had a peoples vote more than 2 years ago and the majority of the people who voted, voted for Brexit.

To have a vote to decide whether to accept the final terms of the so called negotiations by TM and her government, with an organisation that doesn't seem to understand the meaning of negotiations, or remain in the EU is to subvert the result of the referendum to leave.

We are leaving. It's in our's and the remaining EU members interest to have a deal. No deal wont be the best outcome for us and it wont be the best outcome for them either.

It is very likely that we may leave but it is no inevitable if good sense can prevail. Our democracy was subverted by vested interests in the right wing press and the blatant lies of the leave campaign who have been found guilty of breaking electoral rules.

Surely we have learned a great deal in the last two years and when (if) we ever get an agreed deal, it should be put to the people so we can decide whether that looks like we would be better or worse off than we are now?

More than half (51%) of Leave voters and two-thirds (65%) of the public now believe the outcome of Brexit negotiations will be bad for Britain, ...

Why on earth should well all just agree to something which 65% of the public believes will be bad for Britain?

The GMB trade union is polling its members about Brexit, as Labour campaigners for a second referendum look to trade unions to exert pressure on the leadership in the run-up to next month’s party conference.

Brexit is likely to be a contentious issue when Labour members gather in Liverpool. Campaigners say dozens of local parties have passed motions urging the leadership to back a vote on the final deal.

Raab offers us cotton wool on no-deal Brexit. The reality is hair-raising

In an email sent to GMB members, the general secretary, Tim Roache, wrote: “GMB wants to hear from members about your views on Brexit, and whether you think there should be a public vote when we know what the deal looks like.”

Labour MPs keen for their party to endorse a second referendum hope union leaders, who will meet at the TUC’s annual congress in Manchester, will send a message to the party leadership calling for voters be given the chance to reverse Brexit.

This is an interesting take on the present situation from that right-wing publication, The Spectator.-

"The People’s Vote have one big advantage: their opponents are in disarray"

Did anybody catch the latest news conference from Barnier and Raab a few minutes ago? It was on Sky News but the BBC did not show it live.

It is looking a little more promising when Barnier says :

The EU is prepared to build an ambitious partnership with the Uniuted Kingdom "

They covered various subjects and whatever side of the argument you fall on it may hold some answers to the questions that have been ongoing , daily for 2 years now.

A Die Welt article, published on Friday under the headline “The British do not expect much from Brexit”, said of the new poll provided to the German newspaper that 46% of Britons today would vote for remaining in the EU as opposed to 41% against. “In the meantime, a narrow but constant majority is turning against Brexit,” the paper reported.
