Boris Johnson's Latest 'Gaff'

Is it just me?

Watching the tv tonight and noting the 'shock-horror' over Boris Johnson's refusal to apologise for saying that women wearing the burka look like letter-boxes.

Why all the fuss? I'm sick of the media snatching odd, trivial comments and making mountains out of them! (Haven't we got more things to worry about than this?)

Yes, I suppose that comment was a bit rude. But a sacking offence? I think not.

In his defence, in his article in the The Daily Telegraph, Mr. Johnson did not support Denmark's new face-covering ban. And all this talk about him being 'Islamophobic' is completely groundless. So, he said something, publicly, that could be considered 'insensitive' by some.

But why are we all so quick nowadays to be offended by throw-away, silly, comments?

Get a life! (Or some more important news!)

ah ok , well there we are then. So whats the name of it?

We have excellent state run nurseries here.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 19:08:14

so this person was willing to pay very high fees for a nursery but then realised the child was missing out on human interaction due to too many female workers wearing burkas?

When you friend had a look round did it not strike her as a potential problem? Was the child suffering as a result of these faceless burka wearing staff? Absolute rubbish.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 19:11:47

My brother lives in a place where the burka is prevalent and these subjugated women walk behind their husbands or other menfolk.

That old chestnut is way out of date.

Luckygirl Wed 15-Aug-18 19:15:02

oldbatty - of course I am not going to divulge details on a public forum. Why would I? How would it help you?

Why do you think this is an "old chestnut"? - it happens all the time.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 19:16:57

Where? Where in the UK do you see women cowering behind husbands and walking several paces behind.

Its utter rubbish

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 19:18:42

it would help me, because I would be able to comprehend this nursery which is inhabited by burka wearing females who are preventing a small child from having human contact.

Its not true is it?

Jalima1108 Wed 15-Aug-18 19:38:10

I have never doubted anything that Luckygirl has said and to accuse her of lying is beyond the pale.

And probably against GN rules oldbatty

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 19:49:07

Honestly I am intrigued by this place. Its in London and its staffed by Muslim women in burkas , who are inadvertently preventing social contact.

How does it survive? Are the other parents not concerned?

Lynne59 Wed 15-Aug-18 20:00:19

Boris Johnson simply said what a lot of people already think. He perhaps could have worded it differently, but he was right in his views.

I'm just wading-in with various things to say.

I don't like the niqab, but one can have a conversation and relationship with a wearer - I worked in Saudi for 6 months and the young Saudi nurses wore various variations. Despite myself and my underlying feelings, I knew who was who and their different personalities.

There are so few wearers in the UK - I live in the middle of London - it's not a major issue. Why is everyone so scared of these women?

I hate the subjugation of woman as much as any of you so wouldn't want to encourage the wearing of such amongst British-born women, but they are making a choice; as I said upthread, they have mothers and grandmothers who didn't cover.

Regarding children being frightened …... I've just suffered a tortuous bus journey along the length of Oxford Street with DGD(9) it was so slooooow! The place was heaving and the world and his wife were strolling along, including a number of niqab-wearing tourists. I've just asked GD what she thinks of these women and is she frightened of them - she shrugged her shoulders and gave me a strange look! She has never ever commented on them - lives in very rural Somerset.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 20:12:35

there are very few wearers of the niqab in the UK and for some fat, blonde Bullington boy to describe a small minority of women in such disparing terms is a disgrace.

Its not about clothing is it to be honest? Its about power, class and colour.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 20:15:07

Boris Johnson simply said what a lot of people already think.

Who ? Who are these people who believe a woman looks like a pillar box?

Jalima1108 Wed 15-Aug-18 20:15:43

Well, if niqab-wearing women in the UK describe Boris as a fat, blond Bullingdon boy with white hairless legs then that would equal the score.

I expect he would take it on his white, plump chin.

Jane10 Wed 15-Aug-18 20:18:59

I think they look like daleks. Ridiculous to liken them to pillar boxes!

Joelsnan Wed 15-Aug-18 20:19:37

i wonder why your posts appear rather racist, your recent comment seems to demonstrate this.

^there are very few wearers of the niqab in the UK and for some fat, blonde Bullington boy to describe a small minority of women in such disparing terms is a disgrace.

Its not about clothing is it to be honest? Its about power, class and colour^

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 20:39:57

racist? you've lost me there

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 20:41:32

" they look like like daleks" What?

Baggs Wed 15-Aug-18 20:43:30

If men wore niqabs they'd look like letterboxes as well. It's not about women; it's about niqabs, which are "a public discourtesy" in an open society.

Baggs Wed 15-Aug-18 20:43:50

Or daleks.

Riverwalk Wed 15-Aug-18 20:49:21

It's scary AND demeaning. I took the bull by horns today when I saw a lady in one, looked her in the eyes and said pleasantly "you would be SO pretty if you stopped wearing that." I'm going to continue every time I see one, not insulting them but encouraging them out of it. No, I'm sure it won't have slightest effect but I have to say what I think!!!

Did you really say that to a total stranger Starbox - if so what gave you the right to comment on what someone is wearing? TBH, I don't believe you, as you didn't give her response.

Out and about today I saw all sorts of sartorial crimes, e.g. hugely obese women wearing skin-tight leggings and cheap short-length t-shirts. They would be so much prettier if they wore below-arse tunics but I wouldn't dream of telling them so.

We all have our preferences and secret prejudices when we judge what people wear, but we have no right to accost them in public!

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 20:59:45

oh yes, she has every right because they are daleks or letterboxes and walk two paces behind their partners. So that makes it ok.

Baggs Wed 15-Aug-18 21:11:25

"they are" =/= "they look like"

Joelsnan Wed 15-Aug-18 21:29:53

oldbatty
It’s interesting that you don’t recognise racist comment even when you are directing it at your own kind (mind you I am unaware of your ethnicity)
But you define hate crime as:
A hate crime (also known as a bias-motivated crime or bias crime) is a prejudice-motivated crime which occurs when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her membership (or perceived membership) in a certain social group or race.

And you tick all boxes in your comment
^there are very few wearers of the niqab in the UK and for some fat, blonde Bullington boy to describe a small minority of women in such disparing terms is a disgrace
Its not about clothing is it to be honest? Its about power, class and colour^

BTW The colonial memsahib refers to those who consider themselves intellectually and mentally superior to those of other cultures.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 21:44:12

your own kind....what the hell.

you disgust me.
