I would POGS but as you have so often mixed me up with another poster and never apologised to me I really don't see why I should.

Corbyn / BBC declare social class of employees?
(509 Posts)It is said Corbyn will today (Thursday) announce how Labour will reform the BBC. If this turns out to be false news then I apologise now.
It is being discussed in the media how one of his /Labours ideas is for the BBC to declare the ' Social Class ' of employees.
If this is even a thought I find that principal very alarming and if true I expect the Labour Party to lead by example and do the same for all employees including the Shadow Cabinet and all MP's.
How do you work out a persons Social Class? By Wealth, Education, Family background?
I would tell somebody requiring that of me to ' Go Forth'.
how very petty trisher !
Class envy seems to still be around and people are brooding on it.... Corbyn for one.
I don't see why lemon the other poster involved was apologised to, I on the other hand was subjected to a barrage of questions which, if somenone doesn't even recognise my posts, I feel under no obligation to answer. (And what on earth has it got to do with you!!!)
Money envy, not class envy
M0nica it really isn't anything to do with money. It is about ensuring that a balanced and wider view of society is presented than that which comes out when one section of society dominates. So we had for years underrepresentation of ethnic minorities, gay people and the disabled. That is now being addressed, the next step must be to address the real life experiences of all candidates and ensure a proper mix. Such actions do not damage the media, rather they enrich it.

I thought my post to you at 10:46:29 today was polite in format and I do not feel I owe you an apology for anything .
I do not have a concern that you will not engage with my posts nor expand your comments in line with my OP regarding the BBC and why those employed by the BBC have so far been singled out by Corbyn/Labour Party, not neccesarily for their educational background but their Social Class.
I think posters will / can make their own minds up over your wanting both an apology from myself and refusal to engage . Sorry but not surprised is all I can add.
POGS you said trisher
I should have said father in law not father.
I remain confused however. You said:-
"In the 1940s my Scottish FIL applied for a job in England, and filled in the application form truthfully saying he had attended XXX public school."
--
Public Schools / Independant Schools are fee paying private education establishments to my knowledge.^
None of these things apply to me. As you don't even know who I am or what I have posted I see no purpose in discussing things with you. You are so busy trying to think up questions you have no time to read and understand answers.
I engage with people who read and reply sensibly to my posts.
trisher what you are talking about is diversity, which is nothing to do with class.
Money buys privilege. The parents who can subsidise unpaid interns, or help someone poorly paid find lodging in an expensive area, or pay for private education. All these make it easier for young people to get into the media - and this thread is about entry to the BBC.
Meaning of diversity the fact of many different types of things or people being included in something; a range of different things or people:
It has everything to do with class. If one class predominates the organisation is not diverse.

I will apologise!
trisher I apologise for using your name when it was Varian who told the story of HER family not you.
Now will you answer the questions as you stated that was the reason why you did not?
The unions dominate the Labour Party
The apology is accepted POGS thank you. But you have again misread my posts the reason for refusing to answer your questions was not only the apology.
trisher if one gender, one race, one religion, one education pattern , or only those with large incomes, prevails, you do not have diversity.
What, in this day and age, is class?
There are are a variety of views as to what class is but my understanding is that education, employment, income and levels of personal and institutional power and influence are essential elements.
We could equally say "what is social mobility" and yet it is an accepted concept. The thing about social mobility is that it not only benefits individuals but it also benefits the society as a whole. Countries that have more social mobility have higher levels of productivity and their inhabitants report greater levels of contentment. Perhaps that is because there is less sense of unfairness and people are more likely to work hard and contribute to a country which they perceive to give them the opportunity to realise whatever potential they may have.

" The apology is accepted POGS thank you. But you have again misread my posts the reason for refusing to answer your questions was not only the apology. "
Well there you go .
As my questions were also asked prior to any latter posts that appear to have upset you so, I will see your ' refusal ' to engage with me or in anything to do with the reason why the question is being asked of the BBC or what could be the outcome of such information being held on individuals etc. etc. as rather peculiar given the point of the thread .
Choosing to avoid questions or engage with expanded opinions is your prerogative of course but I do admit to having a wry smile reading a thread of yours where you are telling those who are trying to engage with the flow of your thread and have also caused you upset to " why not start a thread? ".
As I am the OP I am saddened you cannot engage with me, not surprised for sure but I hope I have at least remained polite.
POGS, you are always polite, when I was fooled into defending Corbyn and disagreed with you , you always remained polite. When I later said how wrong I had been about Corbyn you never once posted anything but polite posts.
Thank you Anniebach.
No doubt now we will be accused of being ' mates ' .
I remain of the opinion asking for the BBC to declare the Social Class of employees/programme makers is a form of Social Engineering and or meddling by Corbyn/Labour to shape the BBC as they would have it be used. The BBC will only be the start and it smacks of the hard left attitudes of the 1980's .
The hypocrisy of the ' do as I say, not do as I do ' which permanently comes from Corbyn and his cohorts is there for all to see but if Tony Blair was nicknamed ' Teflon' Corbyn should be nicknamed ' Untouchable ' .
No doubt POGS, no matter, you like me have always stood alone and not part of a ‘mates group’
I have been a parrot going on about the hard left in the eighties , it is even more of a threat now than it was then, it drove the likes of Shirley Williams and David Owen out of the party , it is happening again.
POGS if you read through the posts you will see I have in the past replied to you(quite politely I thought) but if you persist in behaving in such an agressive and confrontational way (and sorry I don't percieve such questioning as being polite) I don't see why I should answer alll of your questions.
But to pursue the matter of the BBC. Do I think that programmes should be made by a variety of people from all walks of life? Yes of course they should, and in the past because of the way the BBC funded and financed programmes there was not only greater diversity of programme makers, but a range of award winning programmes made. So we had people funded through them such as Ken Loach and Mike Leigh and from this source came great drama which actually influenced and highlighted social problems. We can't go back to that past where the BBC recognised and funded talent from all levels of society but we can look at what sort of people they are employing now and how that reflects on the sort of programmes they transmit.
I don't care whose someone's parents are, what school they went to, their sexual preference or what they had for breakfast - all I want to know is whether they are the best person for the job
Anniebach You don't have a "mates group". That's a joke.
And do you not think judging who is "the best person for the job" is influenced by your own experiences and social background Oldwoman70?
Eloethan what has your definition of class got to do with class?Your definition covers such a minute number of people in this country, may be 10,000.
What about the rest of us? The other 99.99999%.
Regarding the need to know an individuals Social Class I am reminded of this:-
There is an urban legend about being a frog, and it goes like this.
' If you put a frog in a pan of cold water , the frog will sit there quiet calmly until it boils to death. Creeping cultural change is like that. It's hard to spot when you are living inside it. You can stay very still while the mood of society becomes harder and uglier, telling yourself that everything is going to be fine as all around you the water begins to bubble'..
