Serena’s “meltdown “

As anti- discrimination as the next person, I was nevertheless appalled by her tantrum on court recently.
It was shocking and frankly embarrassing.
Williams insisted that the umpire Carlos Ramos had been sexist because male players don’t get punished for behaving as she did.
“I’m here fighting for women’s rights and for women’s equality and for all kinds of stuff,” she protested, sending up sexist (possibly even racist) grievance flak to distract attention from one key fact: she was a bad loser.
Peehaps she is not entirely wrong. There remains a huge double standard when it comes to how female behaviour is regarded.
However, on this occasion Williams didn’t have a good reason. The stats from the US Open on code violations contradict her: Men 86, Women 22.
What price sportsmanlike behaviour? What is the right way to behave to respect both sport and our opponents?
The bottom line is, Venus Williams may have a great talent but also seems to have a massive ego.
And she has shown herself to be a very bad loser, ultimately doing no favours to women in sport.

I might add don’t be so fucking presumptuous (as that adjective seems to be entirely acceptable) hmm

NanKate Thu 13-Sept-18 16:42:41

Are you always this rude and argumentative Maryeliza with people who hold a different view from you ?

I thought we were all welcome on GN to say what we think even if it differs from others' views, but feel safe that we won't be verbally abused or sworn at.

Anniebach Thu 13-Sept-18 17:05:01

Anyone please, a link to this cartoon

JenniferEccles Thu 13-Sept-18 17:05:26

Well I for one really hope that the f word doesn't become acceptable on here . We are mature women who can, surely, express ourselves without resorting to obscenities.

Some still seem to be missing the point about how cartoon caricatures inevitably exaggerate physical characteristics, and as Serena Williams is a black African then that is how she is depicted.

If it had been, for example Maria Sharapova who had thrown a similar tantrum, then a cartoon of her would show her with exaggerated white, blonde haired European features, wouldn't it?

Would there have been howls of outrage and accusations of 'racism' in that instance?

No, of course not, because it's always one sided isn't it.

To answer your question NanKate - yes I think she is.

petra Thu 13-Sept-18 17:26:25

The colour of Naomi Osaka in the cartoon is not white. The umpire is depicted as white.
The reason Naomi Osaka is depicted with a blond pony tail is because she often has highlights in her hair, as she had on the day of this match.

MawBroon Thu 13-Sept-18 18:02:50

May I add that the “f” word would not normally feature in my vocabulary, certainly not on GN so I apologise unreservedly to anybody I have offended by using it, apart from MaryEliza who is a) unlikely to be offended and b) sat up and asked for it grin

Sparklefizz Thu 13-Sept-18 18:28:50

Her opponent (who is actually bi-racial) is drawn as a blonde haired woman asking the umpire to let Serena win, demonstrating that as an (attractive) white woman, she is the superior one in this relationship.

Actually craicon, it's the umpire in the cartoon who is asking the blonde player to let Serena win, thus not demonstrating at all that she is" the superior one in the relationship."

JenniferEccles Thu 13-Sept-18 18:29:41

MawBroon grin Yes, you've got a point! I wasn't offended, but Gransnet is so much better than Mumsnet, as it seems every other word on that site is f or c .

Having said that I am not little miss goody two shoes. I ,like most people, let rip with the odd mild swear word when provoked.

Sparklefizz Thu 13-Sept-18 18:30:46

If we are going to judge the cartoon, at least let's get it right.

Sparklefizz Thu 13-Sept-18 18:31:36

annie Just google Serena Williams cartoon and it will come up.

Sparklefizz Thu 13-Sept-18 18:32:48

Regarding caricatures, may I just mildly point out that no one complains when Teresa May is caricatured with an enormous pointed hook nose, which is actually very personal, or when Boris is shown as in a paper recently wearing a nappy.

Chewbacca Thu 13-Sept-18 18:39:41

Are you always this rude and argumentative Maryeliza with people who hold a different view from you ?

That would be a yes, NanKate.

MawBroon Thu 13-Sept-18 18:42:18

I think I may be giving all this verbal ping pong a rest as it appears that my post of 16.22 has been deemed “aggressive” by the powers that be.

Do I need to reiterate that it was in reply to this meek, mild, diplomatic and polite request ?

maryeliza54 Thu 13-Sep-18 15:20:46
Damn well won’t Maw stop bring so fucking patronising

confusedconfused

Iam64 Thu 13-Sept-18 18:43:13

Sparkelfizz - I fear you miss the point about racism.

Sparklefizz Thu 13-Sept-18 18:54:01

No need to fear, Iam64 or to be condescending .... I know exactly what racism is, thank you very much, as I have plenty of family experience.

Alima Thu 13-Sept-18 18:56:58

Don’t find you aggressive at all Maw, the powers that be are wrong.

Anniebach Thu 13-Sept-18 19:02:34

Maw you are never aggressive x

petra Thu 13-Sept-18 19:14:52

Maw
It speaks volumes about the standards at HQ that they let that foul rant stand and you get sent to the naughty step.

Jalima1108 Thu 13-Sept-18 19:52:16

MawBroon Thu 13-Sep-18 18:42:18

I think that says a lot about GNHQ and whoever is making the decisions these days.

sad
and
confused

Anniebach Thu 13-Sept-18 19:53:45

Why is it acceptable from one poster but no other poster ?

Jalima1108 Thu 13-Sept-18 19:58:49

I hope the poor child never has to witness such a tantrum or be in the path of one.

Me too. I do hope she becomes a two-year-old Queen of Tantrums.

I just think that Serena has come back too soon, has lost several matches and is not up to her usual standard. It's is not like going back to an office job - it takes time to regain the type of fitness required to be a top athlete.

More than anything else, I think she is angry with herself.

It's a pity she had to over-shadow some of the glory of Naomi Osaka, though.

Jane10 Thu 13-Sept-18 20:18:17

I just Googled that cartoon. Surely it's a caricature? It certainly captured the tantrum which is what it was.

Anniebach Thu 13-Sept-18 20:27:19

Thank you Sparke.

So that is the cartoon ? I think it funny , no way racist.

Serena is desperate to match Margaret Court’s record, pity she hasn’t the same calmness Margaret had.

Overthehills Thu 13-Sept-18 20:32:44

SW was losing the match and then lost her temper. Her behaviour was a disgrace to tennis and Maw’s stats in her OP (I think) are correct.
My sympathy is entirely with Naomi Osaka whose first (let’s hope of many) Grand Slams was completely overshadowed by this prima dona.
I found the cartoon portrayed an African American having a tantrum and read no more into it. I think some on here, like on that court, are looking for racism.

Jalima1108 Thu 13-Sept-18 20:33:41

I just Googled that cartoon. Surely it's a caricature? It certainly captured the tantrum which is what it was.
Yes, it is and it did.

It is no more offensive than those of McEnroe and Murray - and many others of very many prominent figures.
