Aldi have announced a large expansion and are about to employ a further 1000 members of staff. They aren't worried about Brexit then.

It was just a joke, jura. A reference to a scene in The Great Escape.

jura2 Wed 10-Oct-18 20:08:13

oh yes, Merlot- great film.

We were at the station in Switzerland, waiting for our return train to London - the girls and myself, and my dad. He started platting one of the girls hair- and asked me, in French, how do you say 'tresse' in English- so I replied 'platts' - the dog with them man standing next to us immediately sat down and starred at me ;) -a joke too, but true story.

MawBroon Wed 10-Oct-18 21:31:16

plaits, Jura plaits

MawBroon Wed 10-Oct-18 21:32:44

Or even pigtails but the joke would have lost its point. smile

jura2 Wed 10-Oct-18 21:35:46

NO, platts - and pigtails are totally different. And so is a poney tail. Do check.

MawBroon Wed 10-Oct-18 22:09:15

There is certainly no such exercise as “platting” hair!
Tresses translates as “braids” which is an older word for plaits

MawBroon Wed 10-Oct-18 22:09:42

And I do know what a pony tail is!

www.quora.com/Are-plaits-and-braids-the-same-thing-If-so-are-plaits-cultural-appropriation-too

MawBroon Wed 10-Oct-18 22:13:07

And from Wikipedia
In the context of hairstyles, the usage of the term pigtail (or twintail or twin tail) shows considerable variation. The term may refer to a single braid, but is more frequently used in the plural to refer to twin braids on opposite sides of the head.

Maw

Never mind about 'plaits' and pony tails I am interested in your post of Tue 09-Oct-18 22:04:30 as that is my opinion too.

jura

Why do you think Lidl and Aldi are expanding in the UK ? You would think given your appraisal of all things Brexit related they would be running for the hills.

MawBroon Wed 10-Oct-18 22:44:25

Can you hear a pin drop?

Jalima1108 Wed 10-Oct-18 23:14:34

I'm surprised your DD didn't have French Plaits jura!

But then they are more difficult to accomplish until you get the knack.

annodomini Wed 10-Oct-18 23:49:21

For some odd reason, 'plaits' is pronounced as 'platts'. Just as 'plaid' is pronounced 'pladd' or, of course, 'tartan'. When I was in primary school a lot of us had what we then called 'pigtails' - ie two plaits, one on each side. Mine were singularly unsuccessful as I had then, as now, very fine hair. 'Braids' nowadays is used to describe the elaborate designs in which many African/Caribbean girls - even men - wear their hair and which, I'm reliably informed, can take many hours to accomplish! this is how to do a French plait.

MawBroon Thu 11-Oct-18 03:44:52

Do check

I did.

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 09:04:00

Now I thought that pigtails were two bunches of hair, not plaited or braided, either side of the head! Plaits (correct on that one Maw by the way) were just that: plaits. As for pony tails; well that's just one bunch of hair at the back of the head. Obviously! grin

merlotgran Thu 11-Oct-18 09:10:54

No, No. Chewbacca. Do get it right! Two bunches of hair are called.....bunches. Pigtails are tiny little plaits because there's not enough hair to do proper ones. grin grin grin

Which is how my hair used to look because my mother couldn't do decent plaits to save her life. shock

MawBroon Thu 11-Oct-18 09:13:46

I think it is hilarious that a generation of women, mothers of daughters and now grandmothers needed instruction yesterday on plaits, plaiting, pony tails etc !

jura2 Thu 11-Oct-18 10:18:29

Thank you anno, for this clear explanation.

You find it hilarious Maw? And yet you are the one who corrected me, no:

' plaits, Jura plaits' - leading to further comments. I thought it was rude and against etiquette to correct spelling, especially when the sound is 'platts' (like Platz, in German, which is the dog command for 'sit') - and to a non native speaker too ;) who is not quite British enough for you.

Hilarious indeed - or call it nasty, P O V and all that.

Did not hear that pin drop - was out and busy. There is a life for some of us outside GN ;)

Jalima1108 Thu 11-Oct-18 10:20:32

(whispers quietly) so your DD didn't have French plaits then jura?

MawBroon Thu 11-Oct-18 10:25:40

I think honours are even when it comes to correcting! You were eager enough to correct me and my understanding, urging me to "Go check"
I did. End of.
How much easier to say "Oops, phonetic spelling" ☺

jura2 Thu 11-Oct-18 10:32:50

So sad, really. You just can't help yourself - so will leave you to it.

No Jalima, could never master those - and anyway, our neither my girls nor I are French. Heidi's were always standard platts.

jura2 Thu 11-Oct-18 10:35:41

Plaits (US: “playts”/”platts”; UK: “platts”; ) is a noun. It is means hair or straw sections woven into braids.

Jalima1108 Thu 11-Oct-18 10:36:43

I had a Heidi outfit when I was a child - a proper, beautifully embroidered hand-me-down. The headdress was lovely too, but the plaits were made of straw and the top bit was sharp and stuck in my ears.

Fennel Thu 11-Oct-18 11:38:40

I remember reading the Heidi book as a child. I loved it. It was one of the few childre's books available in print in those days.

MawBroon Thu 11-Oct-18 12:23:34

Just in case you didn't realise, that was a guide to pronunciation!
