Harrumph!
I know appearance is not everything, but could Jeremy Corbyn not have found a more appropriate coat and tie?
Looks like a bit of a passive aggressive statement to me.

I take your point, Luckygirl but JC knew that whatever he wore would be up for scrutiny. Wearing an anorak, red tie and the smallest poppy possible was bound to be criticised.

A service of remembrance is no place for a display of stubborness.

POGS Mon 12-Nov-18 22:47:44

I don't care about his coat and tie but I haven't heard him speak out against Aaron Bastani unlike other Labour MP's.

Perhaps that's because he agrees with him.

Chewbacca Mon 12-Nov-18 22:47:47

We cannot choose leaders on their dress sense!. Quite right! But it hasn't stopped the free for all pitching in to criticise TM for wearing leather trousers or a "too short" pink dress on her holidays did it? Or is it considered fair game to criticise a woman's dress sense or lack of it but it's trivialising and detracting from the main issue when its a man or Corbyn.

PECS Mon 12-Nov-18 22:55:45

I have not criticised TMs appearance. She always looks ok. Not my style but then she is not my height and shape grin

Jalima1108 Mon 12-Nov-18 23:03:55

I still don't understand why the red tie was wrong though.

I will go and take a long, hard look at my red scarf - should I consign it to the charity shop?

M0nica Mon 12-Nov-18 23:07:15

I think it is being very parochial to only talk about the impression he made on us.

Why does no-one address the issue of what effect did his appearance on Sunday have on other world leaders he will have to negotiate and deal with?

oldbatty Tue 13-Nov-18 08:55:47

Some of the nastiest people I have ever encountered wore smart suits. Males and females.

PECS Tue 13-Nov-18 09:02:28

But this was not an international event! It was,a domestic one. JC has suits etc and when at indoor formal places is dressed as expected. Because he chose a showerproof jacket rathere than a black wool coat he is deemed weak & shambolic! What was thst chap ewearing when he said he did not tealise the importance of the channel ports & Brexit?

PECS Tue 13-Nov-18 09:03:03

sorry for fat finger errors..on my phone!

sodapop Tue 13-Nov-18 09:04:07

I agree Chewbacca it seems its ok to criticise the dress sense of any woman in the public eye but heaven forfend the same rule should apply to men.

Jalima1108 Tue 13-Nov-18 10:24:43

Some of the nastiest people I have ever encountered wore smart suits. Males and females.
ditto people in anoraks

You just can't tell, eh, oldbatty

oldbatty Tue 13-Nov-18 10:29:32

yes and some of the nastiest, sarcastic people I have ever " met" are on this forum.

POGS Tue 13-Nov-18 10:34:19

Sigh

Jalima1108 Tue 13-Nov-18 10:36:25

I still need the red tie problem explaining to me

Should Jez have worn a black tie?

The red tie matches the poppy

Anniebach Tue 13-Nov-18 10:37:54

Surely laying a wreath at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day isn’t an informal event

Anniebach Tue 13-Nov-18 10:39:44

Was not the poppy he wore made to remember the women in the wars. Kate wore one with a red poppy.

gillybob Tue 13-Nov-18 10:42:14

I thought black ties were worn as form of respect Jalima ? The tie JC wore was a kind of reddy purple . Hardly to match the poppy which was so tiny you could barely see it at all .

Jalima1108 Tue 13-Nov-18 10:44:58

Oh, I have only seen photos online and someone mentioned a red tie upthread, someone else said it was purple; I didn't see the tv at all so why it would be purple I have no idea.

Perhaps he didn't choose it himself as I just don't think he is good with clothes.

Chewbacca Tue 13-Nov-18 10:52:38

Perhaps he didn't choose it himself as I just don't think he is good with; ^clothes.

Understatement of the century Jalima! grin

M0nica Tue 13-Nov-18 10:53:42

It was not a purely domestic event. It was on the news and would have been seen in many countries and certainly reported and then shown to many of the worlds leaders. Diplomats also attend these events and report back to their home governments. It will also have been seen or reported to the directors of major UK and international companies who have businesses in, or are thinking of investing in Britain

I regret that the international view of Corbyn is as pusillanimous seven stone weakling will have been reinforced by Sunday's even.,

So I ask again. What effect do you think Sunday's event had on the image of Corbyn on the international scene and how will that play back to shape our futures, if he became Prime Minister?

gillybob Tue 13-Nov-18 10:57:35

It looked like a purplish red to me Jalima could be wrong though .

PECS Tue 13-Nov-18 13:43:28

So M0nica just checking you are not being sizest! Do you mean only people of certain height/ weight should aspire to be senior politicians?

Just because the current POTUS judges people by appearance does not mean the world should fall in line with his opinion.

M0nica Tue 13-Nov-18 14:22:33

No, small men can pack a punch, look at Macron, Sarkozy or Putin. but when men, of any size, act as if they are little and insignificant and dress the part, yes they will be ignored and walked over, especially if they start out being slight in stature. Especially by physically big bullies.

People have always been judged by how they present themselves, by their demeanour as well as their clothes and always will be.

Compare Mrs May with Christine Lagarde, the head of the IMF, Mrs May completely fails to project an air of authority and it shows in how she dresses and her demeanour.

Christine Lagarde, is white haired and her face is wrinkled, She dresses quietly and discretely in black, white and grey, but, even in pictures she projects power and influence, because of how, in her carefully chosen and deliberately expensive clothes, she projects an image of a powerful person both by demeanour and dress.

By Michael Rosen:
The War of Corbyn’s Coat

If Corbyn’s coat is wrong,
the others’ coats must be right.
The dead cannot see coats.
Day cannot see night.

Hurrah for the warriors of the press!
We know what rocks their boat:
at the sight of a million dead,
they quibble over Corbyn’s coat.

Let us praise famous coats,
worn to mourn the dead of war;
worn by those who lead us
as their bombs slay even more.

It’s not his coat they hate.
That’s not really their cause
What gets up all their noses?
He opposes all their wars.

Let us imagine the day -
or it could perhaps be night.
The politicians start a war
and no one turns up to fight.

PECS Tue 13-Nov-18 14:34:43

Ah! Well I suppose that is a difference between the two of us. I am not that easy to impress with dress & style.

My mother's favourite phrase was

" PECS don't judge a book by its cover. Words & deeds, words & deeds" That mainly grew out of the prejudice and racism she faced from some and kindness and acceptance from others.
