Theresa May will lose the vote on Tuesday.

Do you agree?

And then what will happen next........let’s see whose prediction is the closest. Perhaps let this thread run about 2 weeks and see who got it right, or nearly right.

Declare a winner just before Christmas.

Over to you ?

MaizieD, I believe that the EU commission would come severe pressure from member states in the week's following a no-deal brexit if it was seen that Britain is still freely trading with the EU while not being a member. Anyone of those 27 member states could quote the above, and demand that tariffs be introduced on trade goods coming from the United Kingdom.

Therefore, I do believe that free movement through the ports would eventually be terminated and checks on HGV vehicles would commence bringing about the predicted "chaos" in those ports. However, if what those in the road haulage industry are observing is correct, then it may be several weeks if not one or two months before those checks are introduced, giving Britain at least a breathing space to try and resolve the situation.

However, I do agree with the hauliers that panic buying could be the biggest threat to stability in Britain in the week's running up to the 29th of March

Well, the knowledge that nothing unfortunate , even regarding your health can possibly affect you under any circumstances GG is, I'm sure an enormous relief for all of us on this thread. However your obvious lack of empathy never mind sympathy for those less fortunate that yourself is truly astonishing and something that has left me shaking my head in disbelief! Are you trying to wind us up? or do you truly believe what you have stated? If it's the latter then I actually feel sorry for you.

I find you an enigma GabriellaG - some of the facts you have told us about your life are contradictory.

Jalima1108 Sun 09-Dec-18 12:03:30

Grandad I saw something recently on the tv (I can't remember which programme now) where the interviewer visited Immingham and the people in charge of Immingham Port were very confident that they are well prepared for all eventualities come Brexit. They didn't understand why there is such concentration on Dover when there are other possible ports which are geared up and ready.

oldbatty Sun 09-Dec-18 12:22:42

GG, is in fact a bloke from Widnes.

Ilovecheese Sun 09-Dec-18 12:22:52

I predict that Esther McVey will make a bid for the Tory leadership if Mrs May loses the vote on her deal.

Granny23 Sun 09-Dec-18 12:36:52

That oldbatty is an insult to all the blokes in Widnes grin

Jalima1108 Sun 09-Dec-18 12:37:18

I know a bloke in Widnes and he is very nice smile

Grandad1943 Sun 09-Dec-18 12:37:40

Jalima1108, the concern is in regard to the roll on roll of ports, not those that deal with containers in the bulk of their operations.

nigglynellie Sun 09-Dec-18 12:39:18

Thanks oldbatty, Now that is a genuine relief, and this 'person' can now be ignored!!

Jalima1108 Sun 09-Dec-18 13:40:17

Thanks Grandad
I confess I am not very au fait with these things, but I thought the people from the Port of Immingham seemed very confident about the future.

Grandad1943 Sun 09-Dec-18 14:02:13

They would Jalima1108, as Immingham would eventually hope that more freight would come through that port in containers, which may EVENTUALLY happen.

However, at present 44% of Britains food arrives into the UK through the roll on roll off (Ro-Ro) ports. In that, a truck passes through Dover every forty seconds.

The above could be what is known as "food for thought", pun intended. grin

GabriellaG Sun 09-Dec-18 14:24:28

Really? Do you keep tabs on all the GNers who post or only on a select few. Am I archived or in the 'out' tray?
I 'erroneously it seems' thought that it was all about the subject matter/ thread and not about cross referencing the background of the posters.
Do correct me if I'm wrong in that assumption.
If there is anything in your compilation of my comments on GN which gives rise to a ? in your mind, do ask and I'll be happy to set the record straight. grin

Jalima1108 Sun 09-Dec-18 14:26:41

Grandad last year we stood on the White Cliffs of Dover watching in amazement as one after another rolled in!

GabriellaG Sun 09-Dec-18 14:27:55

My 14:24 post is to Jalima1108

Izabella Sun 09-Dec-18 14:34:06

I think I will sit down and put on my specialist headphones and listen to Gary Newmans Savage - Songs from a Broken World album.

Sticking my head in the sand ? I just do not understand what is going on here. There is so much we are not being told.

On the other hand NZ is always lovely .......................

Jalima1108 Sun 09-Dec-18 14:35:53

except when there is an earthquake …..

Grandad1943 Sun 09-Dec-18 14:47:34

Izabella, New Zealand is not the paradise it made out to be as it is full of earthquakes and volcanos from what I have been told. confused

One of the admin staff in the office emigrated there only four years ago, but has now returned and is back with us. Constant earth tremors and very high cost of living she says.

Stick with Britain, we will eventually get through this...........some time or other. smile

Izabella Sun 09-Dec-18 14:50:26

Grandad I have first hand experience of Christchurch in 2011. I have relatives there and have spent many of our winters there.

Jalima1108 Sun 09-Dec-18 14:56:06

We know quite a number of people there too Izabella - some are staying for good, one or two have come back. Mostly people seem to love it, although we've also met New Zealanders who have moved to Australia after experiencing a Christchurch earthquake (or more than one).

Izabella Sun 09-Dec-18 16:10:47

Yes, Jamila I know several who have moved to Oz from NZ and vice versa. I think those who come back did not really research things properly in the first instance not spending enough time out there before making the big decision. It is a wonderful lifestyle but I have too many friends here. I would never emigrate there but happily go for months at a time. Some say it is expensive but I have never found it so (apart from books) but I live a frugal life wherever I am and you can only take so much in a backpack!!

GrannyGravy13 Sun 09-Dec-18 16:56:15

We have strong links to Melbourne which has become our go to “bolt hole”, as is Southern Spain and Portugal, (trouble with a European bolt hole the AC join you)

GabriellaG54 Sun 09-Dec-18 18:25:19

My name has been changed from GabriellaG to make my identity crystal clear. Too many names abbreviated to GG. grin

MaizieD Sun 09-Dec-18 18:36:57

You'll still get abbreviated to GG, Gabriella. But I don't think we'll have a problem differentiating between you. You have quite different views and yours are very distinctive...

GabriellaG54 Sun 09-Dec-18 18:53:24

MaizieD
The purpose is so that veiled remarks which do not make clear (to other GNers who may be reading the thread) which GG is being discussed, cannot be misinterpreted.
