The cliff edges nearer because May doesn’t want to split party!

Theresa May has effectively ruled out Labour’s proposal for a Brexit compromise, stressing her objection to staying inside a customs union. “I am not clear why you believe it would be preferable to seek a say in future EU trade deals rather than the ability to strike our own deals?” she wrote to Jeremy Corbyn. The PM argued that her own Brexit plan “explicitly provides for the benefits of a customs union” in terms of avoiding tariffs, while allowing “development of the UK’s independent trade policy beyond our economic partnership with the EU”.

She accepted a customs union could potentially have delivered her a Commons majority but at the serious risk of splitting her party.

The letter comes amid a growing presumption that while May remains officially committed to putting a revised Brexit plan to MPs as soon as possible, in practice this is unlikely to happen before the end of February. Business leaders have called for quicker action, with the head of the CBI, Carolyn Fairbairn, saying the UK is “in the emergency zone of Brexit now” and the confusion will not just affect jobs and investment, but harm the UK as a long-term business destination.

And over in the Telegraph today varian there are articles about the Labour split!

varian Wed 27-Feb-19 20:43:25

The Torygraph attacking the Labour Party! Surely not!!!

Prime minister Theresa May has conceded that MPs will have a vote to extend Article 50 and delay Brexit. They will also have a vote to rule out a No Deal scenario.

Despite this Commons pantomime, it’s notable that these concessions come only days after a largely unreported appeal court hearing. During this, May’s legal counsel admitted “the PM is aware” that the Leave campaigns acted unlawfully.

I clicked on your link varian and was sorry I had. Immediately a box popped up from ‘Canary Press’ thanking me for my ‘continued support’ .. .??
Then straight away another box popped up saying I had been chosen to have a ‘lucky spin’ and I didn’t want to press ‘ok’ and activate the roulette wheel. In a lighter tone of ink I did locate a ‘X’ so clicked on that hoping to runaway but when I did the bluddy roulette wheel starting spinning and guess what? I’ve won £200 to spend in Aldi.

God whatta mess. I’ve come on here via a different screen just to warn you all not to open that link! I’m going to peep now at the other screen and try to get rid of it ?

varian Thu 28-Feb-19 11:04:56

That hasn't happened when I've clicked it. Try again.

Urmstongran Thu 28-Feb-19 11:19:02

Not trying it again varian! It was something linked to a FB page when I got out of it. Strange as I’ve never belonged to FB. Maybe it’s lonked somehow via GN who knows?

The UK cannot unilaterally extend Article 50, it has to be agreed by all Member States.

varian Thu 28-Feb-19 11:43:00

That is correct GG13. Not only would all 27 other member states need to approve the extension, but there would have to be a proper justification for it, such as a People's Vote, not just kicking the can down the road a bit longer.

On the other hand the UK could unilaterally Revoke Article 50 and we would remain in the EU on the present advantageous terms - not in the Euro, nor in Schengen and receiving a rebate.

Fraser Nelson, writing in the right-wing magazine The Spectator, comments-

"The only certainty in the Brexit process is that there is no certainty. Brexiteers had long sought solace in the fact that, by law, the United Kingdom will leave the European Union on 29 March with or without a deal. But it’s now clear that this is not necessarily the case — or even likely. As we have seen this week, Theresa May is not in control of her party any more than Jeremy Corbyn is in control of his".

Latest figures show (according to @afneil) :-
The Euro has netted Germany €2 trillion

it's cost France €3.6 trillion and Italy €4.3 trillion.

Am I the only person that finds this worrying.

To quote "It's a German Empire hoovering up everyone's wealth. - replacing the Panzers with a union and currency"

Urmstongran Thu 28-Feb-19 11:53:37

Of course we could revoke Article 50 varian but what about the majority - the 17.3 million of us who voted to Leave?
No. Just get us out.

varian Thu 28-Feb-19 12:14:00

That is the only reason the leavers ever give, yet we all now know that the referendum was ill conceived, fraudulent and won by lies. Many who believed the lies now realise they were fooled by the illegal leave campaign. Just because you wrotea suicide note you don't have to jump off the cliff.

Urmstongran Thu 28-Feb-19 13:06:53

This is exactly what Remainers cannot get their heads around. That, even after all the mismanagement, petitions to cancel Brexit, calls for a second referendum, a People’s vote, an extension to Article 50 etc ... we Just Want To Leave.
It wasn’t a suicide note (to us).
Frustrating to you Remainers I can appreciate that.
But in the last 32 months it’s been bluddy frustrating for us Leavers too!

varian Thu 28-Feb-19 13:17:47

You voted for it. Most of us did not. If there is a People's Vote (and I would prefer that it wasn't needed) then I hope you will consider the facts before you vote again. Did you vote for your children and grandchildren to be worse off, to be less secure and to be citizens of a once-great country which became the laughing stock of the world?

Urmstongran Thu 28-Feb-19 13:50:56

Please don’t be so condescending varian I did my homework too you know before I voted. I must have just listened to and agreed with different expert opinion than you did!

varian Thu 28-Feb-19 14:21:43

Are these the experts you listened to before you voted? (actually only the last two were telling the truth)

‘Absolutely nobody is talking about threatening our place in the single market’ – Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan

‘Once we have settled our accounts, we will take back control of roughly £350m per week’ – Boris Johnson

‘The UK loses out because other members favour a highly regulated and protectionist economy’ – Jacob Rees-Mogg

‘Turkey (population 76 million) is joining the EU’ – Vote Leave publicity

"Getting out of the EU can be quick and easy – the UK holds most of the cards in any negotiation" - John Redwood

" A free trade deal with the EU will be the easiest trade deal in history" - Liam Fox

"Over 70% of our laws are made by the EU and that we have lost our sovereignty" - Nigel Farage

"People in this country have had enough of experts" - Michael Gove

“Only a madman would actually leave the market,” - Owen Paterson

"If a democracy cannot change its mind, it ceases to be a democracy." - David Davis

Did anyone hear the man on talk radio? He is an Englishman with an Italian wife and a house in Italy.
He stated that Italy are ready to leave.
We aren't the only ones between a rock and a hard place.
The eu want to extend article 50, but not for too long because they are terrified of Farages new party putting MEPs in the eu parliament.

Urmstongran Thu 28-Feb-19 14:41:29

*sigh
No varian

Try these:

The UK gives the EU a gross contribution of £350 million a week. This is not a lie, and it is an amount which could be spent on the NHS if the UK Government so wished. These are usually touted as lies, but this stems from 'Remain' campaigners being unable to tell the difference between the words 'gross' and 'net' as well as the difference between the words 'could' and 'will'.

In reality the lies came from the 'Remain' campaign.

European Council President Donald Tusk, said western political civilisation would be destroyed if the UK voted 'Leave'. As you are currently reading this, it is safe to say western political civilisation has not ended. Therefore, we must conclude this was a 'Remain' lie.

David Cameron implied in a speech about the "serried rows of white headstones" that World War 3 would be upon us if Brexit occurred. The last time I checked the UK had not invaded Poland or any other country, and therefore we must conclude this was a lie.

George Osborne predicted tax rises and spending cuts would be implemented. To date, no changes to the planned tax rates or public spending have been implemented. So, another lie, and thankfully after his sacking Osborne is no longer in a position create his 'punishment budget'.

Remainers said there would be an immediate Brexit recession. No recession to date and finally Mark Carney, the Governor of the Bank of England, now admits he is "quietly optimistic" about Brexit. Lie number four.

3 million people in the UK will lose their jobs was the fictitious figure banded about. However employment is UP! Another lie.

"A dangerous fantasy" is how Nick Clegg described Nigel Farage's claim of EU plans to create an army. Barely three months on from the Referendum, Juncker proposed an EU Army. I'm looking forward to Nick Clegg's next apology video like the one he made after his last whopper!

David Cameron said he wouldn't resign as Prime Minister if he lost the Referendum vote. Enough said.

The former Prime Minister also tried to claim the UK could manage its immigration policy while inside the EU. Why are 'Remain' campaigners insisting we start to control immigration in any Brexit deal then? Because we cannot control EU immigration now, proving Cameron was lying.

Universities wanted the UK to remain in the EU because leaving would result in Horizon 2020 funding disappearing. The Chancellor, Philip Hammond, has agreed to keep this funding in place.

These lies were spouted by the 'Remain' campaign during the EU referendum.

It is about time us Brexiteers challenged this ridiculous narrative of leave lies and remain truths. We voted 'Leave' for control over the laws of this country, and the patronising suggestion we are gullible idiots is quite frankly ridiculous. Remain campaigners should look in the mirror if they want to find a liar. The sooner we Get Britain Out of the EU, the better.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 28-Feb-19 14:42:15

Petra we have met people in Holland, France, Portugal and Southern Ireland who think that if their countries had a referendum it would come out in favour of leave.

If Article 50 is extended the UK would have to hold EU elections in May, another waste of money.

I read a quote from an ex EU President yesterday along the lines of - "they (the UK) are looking into the abyss with our knife (the EU) at their throats and a gun in their back" who in their right mind would want to be part of an organisation like that.
