A small number of back benchers will announce they are leaving the party this morning.

Chuka Umunna is one who may be among them.

My friend had a normal well-educated Glasgow accent but his is more unusual.

thank you for accepting ,my South Luton, situation, this is quite typical on an MP not standing by us in South Luton...I have lived her for 35 years, and we are deceived, by our MP.

I don't think Barry Gardner has moderated his accent. He has a normal well educated Glasgow accent.

Urmstongran Wed 20-Feb-19 20:01:19

Oh wow - Derek Hatton has already been suspended over a tweet calling on Jews to denounce Israel. He didn’t last long in the fold did he?

Jalima1108 Wed 20-Feb-19 19:49:38

I was going to say "not Glasgow" but he is from Glasgow!
He must have moderated his accent.

Jalima1108 Wed 20-Feb-19 19:48:17

Think BG is a Scot
It's a very gentle accent

Jalima1108 Wed 20-Feb-19 19:47:49

Well, that's when I stopped!

PECS Wed 20-Feb-19 19:47:36

Urmstongran Wed 20-Feb-19 19:46:50

Nick Clegg. ?

Jalima1108 Wed 20-Feb-19 19:45:18

But do we not all think that a third party (with some clout) would be an improvement to our parliamentary system?
Well, we did have one Morgana, and I voted for them consistently over the years but they are somewhere in the wilderness now.

Jalima1108 Wed 20-Feb-19 19:44:18

grin

His accent is most unusual - where is he from?

Not Dame Edna, the other Barry of course.

Urmstongran Wed 20-Feb-19 19:27:34

Oops! Sorry meant Gardner of course possums!

Urmstongran Wed 20-Feb-19 19:26:40

You’re right Mycat about Barry Humphreys. He could bore for England. When he stands up on his hind legs in the HoC we have to press the ‘mute’ button. My husband calls him ‘let me finish’ as even in a studio on a panel he won’t be interrupted - not even by the host!

Mycatisahacker Wed 20-Feb-19 19:17:13

POGS

Ok smile

HEADS UP

Out of fairness I have started a thread of it's own merit regarding bi-elections and Resignations as this thread was about Labour MP's and we now know that other parties have also had Resignations.

varian Wed 20-Feb-19 19:03:46

The only thing which could bring about a lasting improvement in our political system would be to scrap the appalling undemocratic FPTP system of voting in favour of Proportional Representation.

Mycatisahacker Wed 20-Feb-19 19:00:09

Day6 I agree with you. There should be by elections.

lemongrove Wed 20-Feb-19 18:56:53

Mycat grin

lemongrove Wed 20-Feb-19 18:56:17

You would think that an MP who deserted their Party would have to face a by -election , but apparently it isn’t so.
When there is a GE of course, they may not get anywhere as their previous Party would then field a new candidate.

Mycatisahacker Wed 20-Feb-19 18:54:14

Barry Gardner is proposterous in every interview.

Morgana Wed 20-Feb-19 18:51:41

Day6 Wed 20-Feb-19 18:34:09

Most Remain voting MPs agreed to trigger Article 50. A nod to democracy. Not your Remain MP, Andy.

LUTON SOUTH

Leave vote

MP: Gavin Shuker (Labour)

He did not vote on the issue of Article 50 but supported the remain campaign

I agree.. if the candidate I had voted for , based on a manifesto, then resigned from the party but not the MP role I would be very miffed. Sadly I have only once voted for a candidate who was then elected MP! So I have learned to live with political disappointment grin

Day6 Wed 20-Feb-19 18:09:40

Apologies, I forgot to leave a link to my post (above) regarding Leave constituencies with Remain MPs.

In any other line of work, if you were appointed because you agreed to endorse certain policies and argue for particular benefits, if you decided not to carry out the employers policies and didn't argue for the benefits outlined by the employer, because you didn't like his regime, the sack would follow.

Much as I admire Labour defectors reacting to Labour leadership and the state of the party, they have effectively removed themselves by vacating the premises in which they work to go and join people who agree with them elsewhere. They say they will not return to the workplace or the job they were appointed to do..

In that case, why are they still being paid? confused

I'd have relished such flexible terms when I worked! grin
