Are we nearly there?

It appears there is a sense of cautious optimism among UK officials in Brussels that a breakthrough over the Irish backstop just might be on the horizon.

Theresa May will be arriving tomorrow to hold talks with Jean-Claude Juncker on the Brexit state of play. And Geoffrey Cox, the Attorney General, is also due to present new "technical details" on clarification to the backstop, in a move geared at reassuring MPs that it will be temporary.

The nature of those technical details is shrouded in secrecy. But UK sources in Brussels say that, politically speaking, the details may be immaterial.

Instead, the key requirement is that Mr Cox feels comfortable returning to Westminster and telling MPs that he no longer has reservations about the backstop.

Corbyn is going to Brussels Thursday

EllanVannin Tue 19-Feb-19 20:34:46

I hope it keeps fine for him Anniebach !

Who’s interested in talking to Corbyn? They want to talk to the organ grinder ( May) not the monkey.

Hopefully that will swing it Urmstongran for the deal.

It’ll be good to move on. Business will get their clarity. We can leave 29 March.

No ‘crashing out without a deal’. How sick am I of that sentence!

Anniebach Tue 19-Feb-19 21:14:03

I am really fed up of it all

Urmstongran Tue 19-Feb-19 21:25:25

Aren’t we all Anniebach
I’m hopeful we are nearly there.

Anniebach Tue 19-Feb-19 22:12:16

Let's all hope this brexit nonsense can be stopped before it is too late.

gringrin Really???
How many column inches either here or in the media have been devoted to this sentiment, Varian.

Anniebach Tue 19-Feb-19 22:31:39

Varian who can stop it, Mrs May is determined to abide by the result of the referendum and Corbyn wants out.

varian Tue 19-Feb-19 22:40:40

We can still hope that our MPs will do what most know is their duty to prevent our country being damaged any further.

Urmstongran Wed 20-Feb-19 07:43:04

It’s nit going to happen varian so it’s time to accept we are leaving next month.

The Remainer MP’s.have been unable to work together to get behind one strategy to derail it. They all stick to their own preferred options soon the end there will be no second referendum, no extension of Article 50 and no taking ‘no deal’ off the table.

I believe it’s full steam ahead now. ?

The country is in a state of political chaos unprecedented in our lifetimes. I would not be so foolish as to make predictions at this stage.

Anniebach Wed 20-Feb-19 09:09:52

I agree with Urmstongran

varian Wed 20-Feb-19 09:22:59

A number of Tory MPs may join this independent group today, according to news reports (their predictions, not mine). It would not take many to go for the opposition to outnumber Tories+DUP.

Tory MP and chairman of the 'Right to Vote' campaign @DrPhillipLeeMP says people are being "driven to reconsider their position in the party". But he insists he's "certainty not leaving" but would "understand if others did".

Phillip Lee accuses the PM of refusing to meet him whereas she is constantly pandering to the right-wing extremists in the ERG.

Are you posting on the correct thread varian? This one is whether we think a deal is imminent.
Anniebach has a thread about breakaway MP’s.

Crazygran Wed 20-Feb-19 11:08:52

Let’s hope Corbyn stays there ?

varian Wed 20-Feb-19 11:13:45

Three Tory MPs have resigned from the party so making
it more like that brexit can be stopped. Perhaps we are nearly there!

varian Wed 20-Feb-19 11:16:08

Sarah Woolaston, Heidi Allen and Anna Soubry believe the country deserves better.

Anniebach Wed 20-Feb-19 11:18:28

I have posted their names on the Breakaway thread varian

Urmstongran Wed 20-Feb-19 11:22:06

This is the thread about the. negotiated deal for Brexit Crazygran ?

varian Wed 20-Feb-19 11:33:17

The quitters might hope that "nearly there" means getting their own way and forcing the UK out of the EU. Many hope that "nearly there" means the end of brexit.

Nanniejc1 Wed 20-Feb-19 11:35:15

Roll on Brexit,we voted democratically to leave the EU & it’s taken over two years & we’re still waiting!!!!
