Any fellow Leavers who would like to use this thread to post GOOD NEWS (away from Remainer doom & gloom)?

How about this for starters:

Norway’s $1 trillion (£753 billion) sovereign wealth fund – among the world’s most respected investors – has just confirmed it will boost its UK holdings. “Over time, our UK allocation will increase,” said Yngve Slyngstad, the Norwegian Fund’s CEO. “With our 30-year-plus time horizon, current political discussions don’t change our view,” he added, reaffirming his commitment to Britain even in the case of a no-deal Brexit.
This kind of clear-sighted, grown-up analysis contrasts starkly with the endless doom-mongering we get from subsidy-hungry politicos at the CBI. It’s precisely because Britain will thrive after Brexit that we attracted record foreign direct investment last year, beating the US, with only China attracting more. Even British start-ups raised almost £8  billion in venture capital during 2018 – some 70 per cent more than their French and German counterparts.
Boeing has opened its first manufacturing plant in Europe – in Sheffield. Technology-driven investment is piling in – not just to London but to Manchester and the North-East too. And, as Brexit-bashing stories about planes not flying are trumped by reality, investors from China to the Middle East are flocking to a country just judged by Forbes magazine as the “best place in the world to do business” for the second year in a row.
Yes, overseas investors are taking advantage of the weaker pound, which makes UK assets look attractive. But that’s how exchange rates work – which is why Europe’s monetary union is so crippling for many of its members.

Sorry for the long post but I’m not keen on links!

Yay❗️
Someone in the Establishment talking sense today!

Sir Richard Dearlove said there were “no tangible benefits” from a Brexit conducted under Mrs May’s deal, which would merely “prolong the agony”.

He is joined in a letter to The Daily Telegraph by 33 academics and business leaders who say a no-deal Brexit offers “immediate opportunities”.

It came as the Governor of the Bank of England admitted his previous predictions of the impact of no deal had been too gloomy. In November, Mark Carney said no deal would result in a reduction of 5-8 per cent of Britain’s gross domestic product. Yesterday he told a House of Lords committee the economic hit could be just 2.5 per cent over three years, with the worst case scenario 6 per cent. He told peers: “There has been progress in preparedness and that reduces the level of the economic shock.”

More GOOD NEWS on this forum to share!
I’m feeling more optimistic by the day.

And it seems No Deal (or leaving on WTO terms - certainly ot that awful ‘crashing out’). is still on the table, and the UK Parliament cannot remove it simply by voting against it.

It can only be removed if one of the following happens:
1. The UK Govt rescinds the A50 notice; or
2. The UK Parliament votes for some other terms of withdrawal, agreed between the EU and the UK Govt (not necessarily the current WA).

Unless one or other of these things happens before termination of the A50 period the UK will be out of the EU without a deal.

Remainers have wasted irreplaceable time promoting a parliamentary vote that cannot help their cause in any way.

Can you give a link to that please, Urmstongran?

GrannyGravy13 Wed 06-Mar-19 10:38:27

It is either in the Times or Telegraph MaizieD, today.

Jalima1108 Wed 06-Mar-19 10:41:39

I found this from 2017 if it helps
publiclawforeveryone.com/2017/10/16/can-parliament-block-a-no-deal-brexit/

Urmstongran Wed 06-Mar-19 10:49:52

Certainly.

www.economist.com/britain/2019/01/10/can-a-no-deal-brexit-be-stopped

or here:

Actually, just Google ‘can no deal Brexit be stopped’
There are many links - a bit of homework and BINGO!

I was personally leaning towards TM deal as I kept thinking ‘well it’s apparently 60% leave’. It seemed a compromise (of sorts) with neither ‘side’ getting fully what they voted for.

But no wonder she’s dubbed ‘Theresa the Appeaser’ - she’s tried to please both sides and ended up pleasing neither.

The ERG group have a team of 8 lawyers looking at the deal and they think it’s rubbish - we are tied into the E.U. by more than was originally thought. Deeper scrutiny has revealed the U.K. would be dependent on permission for much from the E.U.

I am now thinking leaving on WTO will be what happens.
Time (not much of it left) will tell.
23 days to go.

Labaik Wed 06-Mar-19 13:40:10

And what is good about WTO terms pray tell? And why will it be better than being in the EU given that they have laws that we will have to follow [and have no control over] ?

Urmstongran Wed 06-Mar-19 13:55:09

You are getting confused Labaik
The 2 scenarios you describe are separate!

Urmstongran Wed 06-Mar-19 14:07:22

Oops!
Easy to get drawn & so I’m not. Sorry.

Labaik Wed 06-Mar-19 15:22:53

I'm not drawing you in. I'm asking a question.

Urmstongran Wed 06-Mar-19 15:27:06

Not me, on this forum. Other may want to engage.
Or not.

jura2 Wed 06-Mar-19 15:34:01

Great news Labaik- instead of being strong partners, at the top table, making decisions - we will be free -
to obey unelected WTO commissioners in Geneva- and become vassals of anyone, like Trump- we have to beg for Trade Deals - THEY will dictate the terms- as is clear now- animal husbandry and standards, workers rights, chemical/hormone and antiobics in agriculture, medicines, the NHS even - and with 100000s of visas in exchange. having to follow their rules, without having a say at all - with our begging bowl. Hurrah - love it- fab, supercalifragilisticexpialdocious even.
