Hi everyone -

If you are at all politically minded and would like to share any GOOD NEWS about Brexit, or would just like to post some optimistic thoughts - this is the thread to love.
❤️

Most of us are weary of the gloom and doom on GN! Let’s share positive news and views. Its time to look for compromise, be kind and inclusive with one another if we can. Life’s too short to be scared or miserable!

Stop peeping. C’mon in! We’d love to hear from you.

The comparison with the "millenium bug" threat is absurd. A lot of IT workers were able to ensure that did not happen by sorting the software. The work involved in that, though considerable, was not a tiny fraction of the task of avoiding the effects of a crashout brexit, or clearing up the mess.

Joelsnan: We get out now and have a good chance of establishing a sound and effective economy before the faltering EU ship finally sinks and the remaining countrys will collectively scramble to achieve what we have already achieved...

When do you predict the 'faltering EU' will sink?
What have we achieved? Do you mean successful WTO negotiations? Do you mean another 'strong and stable' government? They really will have to be strong and stable to get us out of the mess WE have created. Have you any idea how this transformation will come about, short of a miracle?

Can anyone on the leavers side actually say what they are wanting back ? What is it we lost ? As I have never missed or noticed losing any single thing since joining with Europe

Not according to CBI Director Carolyn Fairbairn who says only 4% of businesses are prepared for a crashout brexit.

Oh dear varian.

Perhaps they are waiting to see what will be, like most sensible people? Perhaps they don't envisage the hell and chaos and end-of-the-world scenario that you do?

This is a bit like the Millennium moment - at midnight everything was going to crash, according to some. Our computers wouldn't be able to cope. Life would be chaotic.

The 1st January 2000 dawned the same as every other day and life went on.

I am thinking of setting up a therapy service for exhausted, wrecked, stressed-out Remainers - they are going to need something when we eventually exit the EU. Could be a nice little earner.

cbi useless waste of space , always inaccurate , never correct

Day6 Fri 22-Mar-19 10:31:56

Jean-Marc Puissesseau - what a great man! Telling it like it is!

The EU admitted it didn't want borders to be a problem - it's in their interests too to keep things moving. Electronic recognition has been used for ages - stamping documents and queuing is so yesterday. The hold ups/lorry queues we do experience here are because of bad weather, industrial action at the ports or ferry-companies or the tunnel having problems, etc, etc, etc. Cargo and origin/destination is rarely the problem.

I wonder if Remainers will be gutted when their doom-fantasies or the cliff-edge scenarios don't materialise? grin

I am staying optimistic that the future is bright.

This is good to hear. Today in the news:

THE vast majority of British businesses believe they have prepared for a no-deal Brexit, according to the Bank of England, taking steps to handle a disorderly departure from the EU that could happen next Friday.

Eight in 10 companies have taken action, for instance by building up stocks of materials in case of disruption to imports. This is up from 50pc of businesses who had taken preparations in January.

Urmstongran Fri 22-Mar-19 09:55:41

What have the CBI ever been right about? Haha haha
?

Grandad1943 Fri 22-Mar-19 09:12:37

I agree Lemongrove with you on the further uncertainty to business due to the extension time. However, as the joint letter from the CBI and the TUC demonstrated, a no deal scenario would be far worse in their view.

Anyway of to the office again now, so comment again later.

andycameron69 Fri 22-Mar-19 09:11:35

all will be fine I will crack open a dandelion wine and polish off some pork chops and have great fun, one week to go, lets all go bananas and group hugs, all together xxx

I wouldn’t chortle too soon if I were you......there will still be a leaving day and champagne will keep.
It had become obvious that it couldn’t be done soon due to the antics in Parliament. This has pushed it further down the road, yet more worry for businesses who wonder what will happen.MP’s have to get a grip.

Grandad1943 Fri 22-Mar-19 08:48:07

I wonder what will happen with the "Welsh Lamb Hog Roast" that someone on GN was planning for leaving day.

Now that could be really expensive to cancel.

maryeliza54 Fri 22-Mar-19 08:39:25

The Ritz - remind me who owns it and the role they play in influencing British politics?

crystaltipps Fri 22-Mar-19 08:36:21

Hope there’s a dedicated port for champagne. The Nige will need it for his walkers oh no that’s just for his party at the Ritz.

crystaltipps Fri 22-Mar-19 08:34:50

Leaving party organisers have to be careful the catering company don’t have any furriners working for them - they might do that thing with the food like in The Help.

Urmstongran Fri 22-Mar-19 08:29:45

.... “our government decides how to present the stats.” I can believe that. They presented Project Fear pre-referendum!

Grandad1943 Fri 22-Mar-19 08:26:56

Oh dear, it looks like an awful lot of leaving day parties will have to be cancelled for next Friday.

That could prove expensive where caterers are involved. grin

Urmstongran Fri 22-Mar-19 08:26:18

And more good news.

I didn’t know that crude oil, petrol and diesel don't come through Dover but have specialised ports such as Milford Haven.

?

crystaltipps Fri 22-Mar-19 08:23:49

petra I don’t expect you hang around in lots of cafes in Peckham and Brixton. Lots of youth unemployment there. Fact is we’d have 30% youth unemployment if we counted students as unemployed like they do in Spain. Guess what - our government decides how to present the stats.

andycameron69 Fri 22-Mar-19 08:16:16

i need to take my blood pressure it might be as high as some on here..lol

all very exciting indeed ,,one week to go

crystaltipps Fri 22-Mar-19 08:12:42

Weren’t a lot of the cabinet going to resign if there was any sort of extension? Don’t hold your breath.

petra Fri 22-Mar-19 07:54:45

a lot of people that would be me?
That statement was made on the back of spending a lot of time in those countries. Not in hotels where your maybe not exposed to poverty but shopping in local markets, eating and socialising with local folk. It's real, very real.

Urmstongran Fri 22-Mar-19 07:54:20

Morning everyone!
Some more GOOD NEWS to share regarding our exit from the EU in 7 days (or just a few days longer depending on how it goes on Tuesday night!)

The Chairman of the ports of Boulogne-Calais, Jean-Marc Puissesseau, told Radio 4's Today programme that if there is a 'no-deal Brexit' on 29th March "the trucks will be passing just as they are doing today. . “The scaremongering about no-deal has got to stop” he said.

Take a recommend that man. ??

More than one in five persons in the UK workforce now are employed in the Gig Economy but are classed as full time self-employed.

Those people have no guaranteed hours, no sick pay, no holiday pay and no maturity or paternity rights. That is the nature of employment in Britain today and are hidden in the Tory employment figures.

The terms that these poor employers offer under Gig Economy employment make up a large part of what is known as "the race to the bottom."
