The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is 'the will of the people'. Well now there is a petition demonstrating the strength of public support for revoking article 50!

I think 'revoke Article 50' is going to be one of the options for the indicative votes.

Ginny42 Tue 26-Mar-19 10:06:10

Parliament needs to revoke Article 50. It has been a very costly and nerve-wracking episode of Tory misrule of mammoth proportions and it needs to stop.

Caledonai14 Tue 26-Mar-19 10:09:39

Oh hi again Andy. Your pal Lutongranny looked in last night. smile

trisher Tue 26-Mar-19 10:21:08

Hi Andy I'm not sure about what "Leave" meant you can choose from -No deal -we leave without any safeguards and sink into a serious recession.
A customs union-we ask all those countries we had one deal with to let us have some sort of trade deal with each of them.
A Norway deal we get all the same things as in the EU but without a seat at the table
There are also all the things leave was supposed to bring -like an end to free movement which is not only useful but essential for our NHS and anyway immigration is actually up.
Time for the Leavers to admit it is all a complete mess and we need a new vote.

Caledonai14 Tue 26-Mar-19 20:30:40

The petition is to be debated on Monday, April 1st. I think it's goin to go past 6 million.

varian Tue 26-Mar-19 21:33:59

April Fools Day? Let's hope that our politicians are not so foolish as to ignore it.

trisher Wed 27-Mar-19 10:24:04

Only around 50,000 needed to make 6 million!

Ginny42 Wed 27-Mar-19 10:27:13

Yes it will be debated and the comment was, 'We cannot ignore such numbers.' At last!

Ilovecheese Wed 27-Mar-19 10:46:10

I have had an email from the petitions site stating that the Govt will not revoke article 50. The petitions committee will "consider it for debate" so looks like they are going to ignore the petition.

trisher Wed 27-Mar-19 10:53:16

Not quite what the e-mail says-see below
Parliament is going to debate the petition you signed – “Revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU.”.

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/241584

The debate is scheduled for 1 April 2019.

Once the debate has happened, we’ll email you a video and transcript.
Why do Leavers feel the need to lie?

grannysyb Wed 27-Mar-19 11:23:01

Well, the email I got said that they NOT going to revoke article 50. Haven't read all the posts but what's this about leavers?

trisher Wed 27-Mar-19 11:59:38

grannysyb would you care to cut and paste the words from your e-mail as I have done? You can do this without revealing your id.

Fennel Wed 27-Mar-19 12:07:40

As I see it
The difference depends on what is meant by 'the Government'. To me it means the PM and her current cabinet etc.
But now Parliament ie the MPs in the Commons have won a vote to take over the debate. And they have accepted discussion of revoke Article 50. Among other propositions.
Is that right?

trisher Wed 27-Mar-19 12:12:24

Many apologies to everyone the e-mail, which is from the government not the petition organisers, has just come through. As the government has lost so many votes in Parliament lately I assume they would not put the matter to the vote for fear they would lose again.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 27-Mar-19 12:17:32

If the majority of British subjects ends up signing the petition to annul paragraph 50, then it is to be hoped that the politicians will need to respect that.

Last time I checked, Britain was still a democracy.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 27-Mar-19 12:19:21

April Fools Day seems an absolutely marvellous choice for any vote on Brexit!

Kapitan Wed 27-Mar-19 19:44:29

"I'll thcream and thcream until I'm thick. I can!" The lament of the defeated remainers. (Apologies to Bonnie Langford).

lutongranny Wed 27-Mar-19 20:00:52

two days

Fennel Wed 27-Mar-19 20:33:38

Kapitan your quote is from Violet Elizabeh Bott in the Just William books.

Urmstongran Wed 27-Mar-19 20:39:01

A referendum trumps a petition grandtante. Sorry. Don’t raise your hopes whatever the number involved.

Her you can see how quickly the signatures are piling up in your constituency.

Jabberwok Thu 28-Mar-19 14:24:34

Exactly Fennel!!!!

lemongrove Thu 28-Mar-19 15:48:24

Fennel.......as played on tv by Bonnie Langford.

It doesn’t matter how many names are added to an epetition, it means very little and has zero legal status.

Fennel Thu 28-Mar-19 16:43:46

Oh I see, I never saw that series. But the original characters in the books are still fairly fresh in my mind.

Jabberwok Thu 28-Mar-19 16:49:37

I didn't see that series either, but as a child, I loved the 'Just William' books.
