The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is 'the will of the people'. Well now there is a petition demonstrating the strength of public support for revoking article 50!

Norway is a beacon of political stability compared with the U.K. at the moment.
Can you have a “low degree of anarchy”?

MaizieD Mon 01-Apr-19 18:10:15

Sorry, Chewie, I got carried away...You're right, it's million, not billion blush

The UK is a democracy. We had a vote and the majority voted to leave.
I had a friend who worked in Brussels for years as a International trade negotiator. She is a very clever educated person. Obviously I asked her opinion.
She said that the whole place was a disgrace with thousands and thousands of people ( all unelected ) pushing bits of paper around on inordinately high salaries. The Germans dominated and it was organised for their benefit.
The UK MEPs when they leave are going to receive around €6 million in handouts and pensions. I think that just about sums the EA up.
Our local MEP was paying his wife and son approximately £80,000. His expenses were scandalous.
I voted leave and I would still vote leave. It’s not as though our nation has felt any more prosperous inside the EU. We still have food banks and the NHS is a mess.
The migrants hop picking etc were here before we became part of the EU and so were foreign Doctors etc.
The poorest migrants went to the poorest places and affected the conditions of the UK working classes. Not one migrant lives in my village.
We need to have better government NOT more government.
The present agreement that Mrs May is offering is our Versailles. Only a government who has been on the losing side of a war would sign it.

MaizieD Mon 01-Apr-19 18:13:01

Are republics 'anarchies' then? They have no 'masters'.

MaizieD Mon 01-Apr-19 18:22:54

We had a vote indeed but unfortunately the result of that vote cannot be regarded as safe because it turns out that one 'side' cheated and acted illegally. It's been in the news over this weekend. Did you not know?

Interestingly, Theresa May knew about it long ago, as her Counsel admitted in court recently, but she pressed on regardless.

Do you think that cheating and lawbreaking in a campaign was democratic, janeayressiter?

Urmstongran Mon 01-Apr-19 19:03:12

Bloomin’ heck janeeyresister that really made for an interesting read! Reinforces my vote absolutely.
?
The sooner we break away from this overblown, federalist organisation that stymies growth the better in my opinion! It beggars belief that they refuse to have their accounts audited - that alone speaks volumes!

I agree with every word in your comment and applaud your clear appraisal of our present position and prosperity versus the way we were. ?????

trisher Mon 01-Apr-19 19:31:44

We still have food banks and the NHS is a mess.
Blaming the EU for the austerity policies of our own Tory Government and the terrible effects these have had on the poorest in society isn't really on. And how will Brexiting improve things?

MamaCaz Mon 01-Apr-19 19:45:26

Well saod, trisher

MamaCaz Mon 01-Apr-19 19:46:02

Said!

MaizieD Mon 01-Apr-19 19:49:23

For your interest and information

The UK employs some 412,000 civil servants

The EU Commission (civil service) employs 32,000

Most of us find it difficult to deal with very large numbers. Here is a useful reminder of the share of our national expenditure which goes on different things, just to get it in proportion.

GabriellaG54 Tue 02-Apr-19 23:29:36

Most of us find it difficult to deal with very large numbers
Is that so?
Is that 51+% of the population or 51+% of GNers?
Either way, that's a very sweeping statement to make on behalf of at least 51% of the above categories.
You set yourself up as educator to the supposedly uneducated, illiterate and those who 'suffer' discalculia.
This is condescending behaviour at it's worst.
GN isn't a school for dunces and we can all look at pie charts online if we so wish.

GrandmaKT Wed 03-Apr-19 00:10:54

I've said all along varian that if the remain campaign had only published that pie chart during the referendum campaign they would have won! So few people realise what a small proportion of govt spending goes to the EU (and the benefits we get from it).

maryeliza54 Wed 03-Apr-19 09:43:50

varian is absolutely right about the issue with large numbers particularly in situations that lead to comparisons. Pie charts, histograms etc are incredibly helpful when we are wanting to compare different parts with each other and with the whole.

Alexa Wed 03-Apr-19 11:01:10

Once again, thanks to Varian for properly reasearched information easily presented.
Please see the pie chart I refer to I don't know how to copy and paste these.

Alexa Wed 03-Apr-19 11:03:17

PS if anyone would kindly instruct me how to copy and paste graphics I'd like to post this to my FB page.

Greta Wed 03-Apr-19 11:04:38

Thank you, varian, for the chart; I'm sure many of us agree that it is both helpful and interesting.

GabriellaG54: ”^You set yourself up as educator to the supposedly uneducated, illiterate and those who 'suffer' discalculia.

(no doubt you mean "at its worst")

Really, GabriellaG54...

(words fail me, actually)

mcem Wed 03-Apr-19 12:07:43

"Condescending behaviour at it's worst" is setting oneself up as a grammar guru and lecturing others about their perceived mistakes, while making those same mistakes in hectoring posts!

Thank you varian for some clearly presented, relevant information.

PS I'd like to confirm that I am not uneducated. I am not illiterate. I do not "suffer" discalculia.

Alexa Wed 03-Apr-19 20:54:16

But Gabriella surely one enjoys being informed by someone who knows more than oneself?

MaizieD Wed 03-Apr-19 21:26:00

Alexa you can probably copy the graphic by right clicking on it and choosing 'save image as..' (well, I can on my laptop, not sure about a phone or tablet) It should then be saved in your pictures folder.

You could try the 'copy image' option but it never seems to work for me.

Or you could try saving one of these images from its original page:

Gabriella G54 Hoist by your own petard.

GabriellaG54 Wed 03-Apr-19 22:25:27

Alex's...the name conjures up a round tubular shape with a weird accent which notes everything you say.
The best thing is that you can switch it off when it gets on your wick, just as I can ignore certain remarks as garbled rubbish.

GabriellaG54 Wed 03-Apr-19 22:26:47

Alex's Alexa
I blame mild...you know what.

GabriellaG54 Wed 03-Apr-19 22:31:43

Nah Framilode
Not in a million years.
Other people's jibes have absolutely no effect on me.
