Names are coming along at a regular basis, and with May having a meeting with Brady today, it is likely that she will be persuaded to give a date of her departure.

So let’s start looking at who would make the most suitable Tory leader.

The first out of the hat is Boris Johnson.
His first hurdle is facing court to defend the charge of lying before the referendum.

Got to say even though I think Brexit is the right thing to do to honour the ref I still admire vince cable.

At least he never pretended to agree to it. That takes courage.

All the labour bench sitting on that divided fence like the Tories.

Urmstongran Fri 24-May-19 10:42:02

She quoted Sir Nicholas Winton, the British humanitarian who organised the Czech Kindertransport: “Never forget that compromise is not a dirty word. Life depends on compromise.”

Unbelievable. That will go down in history as piece of rank hypocrisy as great as Thatcher's prayer when she stood on the steps of Number 10 for the first time.

Mrs May - it wasn’t ever compromise from you - it was capitulation!

Anyway, bring it on now. A new P.M. (Brexiteer) and a huge Cabinet reshuffle. At least we have Farage to thank for shaking the foundations.

And the EU go to the elections this weekend. They know now that May is history, which should throw up quite a few surprises. I’m surprised to be honest this announcement wasn’t held of until Monday!

mycat Brussels are actively planning for no deal.

No of course they don’t want no deal, no one wants no deal, but if we get a hard right PM as is very likely then the risk of no deal rises considerably.

Brussels find Johnson’s style intolerable as he has a reputation as a liar and unpredictability. They therefore are seriously considering refusing any further extension and assuming a crash out.

I don’t need qualifications to stand as an MP!!!! They do!!! Clearly.

If you are that innocent in negotiations you start by taking a massive option off the table that’s very stupid.

That’s not hard to understand surely.

Look I liked yvette and she would make a better leader than Jeremy any day but in this particular situation her judgment was bad however good she thought her intentions were.

quizqueen Fri 24-May-19 10:47:26

Whoever it is, it needs to be a staunch Brexiteer.

Mycatisahacker Fri 24-May-19 10:48:15

We have spent millions planning a no deal too.

Look anything is better for business than this uncertainty.

We run a business! Deal or no deal is ok we can plan for either but uncertainty is the worse situation ever

Mycatisahacker Fri 24-May-19 10:49:01

Oh deffo not Johnson. He’s incompetent.

I think gove the best of a bad lot.

I know she’s finally United the country by resigning!

MawBroonsback Fri 24-May-19 10:51:11

Ah mycatisahacker, everyone’s an expert. hmm

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-May-19 10:55:56

One thing for sure we will have yet another unelected Prime Minister.

How can he/she be sure of legitimacy?

Mycatisahacker Fri 24-May-19 10:57:45

Maw

No experts are negotiators who do this for a living. We should have used trained negotiators, business leaders and proper advisors not left it to civil servants and MPs.

Seeing this doesn’t make me an expert but it makes me sensible.

Calendargirl Fri 24-May-19 10:59:12

I think Theresa May has had an impossible task, and like many women has tried to appease and placate too many people, both here and in Europe. My heart went out to her making I’m sure a very difficult and heartfelt speech with the world and his wife listening. I bet she can’t wait to lock the door to number 10 and disappear.

Well thems the rules like it or not and I don’t I think anyone resigning a seat, as in change UK, there should be a bi election and for a resigning MP I think a GE.

That’s why Gordon Brown was never seen to be legitimate.

Gonegirl Fri 24-May-19 11:07:38

The Today programme this morning seemed to be taking it for granted it will be Boris. Should be interesting. Quite fun really.

Gonegirl Fri 24-May-19 11:10:00

I have lived in Oxfordshire/Berkshire all my life, and I agree we are probably out of touch with the way some people in other areas of the country have to live. Not sure what we can do about it though, apart from watching Panorama and the like.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-May-19 11:13:52

One thing for sure the government will move even more to the right, because the only leader acceptable to the Tory membership will be a hard right politician.

Mycatisahacker Fri 24-May-19 11:16:37

I hope it’s not Boris! I think he would be good when times are good but at this point you need someone steady clear and competent.

MawBroonsback Fri 24-May-19 11:16:40

Mycatisahacker it is a by election
Sexuality doesn’t come into it.

Labaik Fri 24-May-19 11:21:39

'She quoted Sir Nicholas Winton, the British humanitarian who organised the Czech Kindertransport: “Never forget that compromise is not a dirty word. Life depends on compromise.” '...I don't know how she can mention herself in the same breath as someone like that.....sad ...

Labaik Fri 24-May-19 11:23:03

...especially as we seem to be lurching towards the racist, far right mentality that brought about the need for the kindertransport….

jura2 Fri 24-May-19 11:23:20

Exactly WW2 - and this is seriously worrying. And they will probably go against Parliament and throw us into disastrous NO Deal and catastrophic WTO sad Any remainer rejoicing today has lost their marbles.

Mycatisahacker Fri 24-May-19 11:24:05

You always know when a poster can’t win the debate when they correct a phone spelling error.

Bless you

eazybee Fri 24-May-19 11:24:19

Oh dear.
Once again, we do not elect a Prime Minister, we elect a Party, and the Leader of that Party, (elected by its members, before and/or after an election) becomes Prime Minister.

jura2 Fri 24-May-19 11:25:55

People who have been bitterly complaining about non-elected bureaucrats in Brussels- whom they had the right, as ever before, to vote for yesterday ... are now happy to see the second un-elected PM in charge- who will throw us at the mercy of totally unelected bureautcrats in Geneva- and at the mercy of the whims, tariffs and quotas from 164 countries- without us having a say- the only country in the world to be in that disastrous position.

Beggars belief.

WendyBT Fri 24-May-19 11:26:35

Never Boris! I will tear up my conservative membership card and run for the hills if that man becomes PM.
