OK back on thread - the current list obviously contains many names who are just putting themselves forward in order to drop out later on the basis of a promise of a job from whoever they then decide to back. There’s lots of game playing at this stage ( not a criticism, just a statement of the obvious). Who do I think would make a good leader - I can’t answer that - what is a good leader, good for what. All that will matter is which person will be most likely to keep them in power. Is there a disconnect or otherwise between what many of the public would like and the membership want? BJ would seem to tick both boxes. SJ would never make it - the grass roots will never elect him for obvious reasons. In the final analysis, staying in power is all that will matter.

I am not convinced that any of them would be suitable.

But ww you’re begging the question - suitable for what? The greater good, the long term national interest, keeping them in power? If it were RS I would feel more hopeful but he’s for another day.

What does puzzle me is that given how Brexit has destroyed so many Tory leaders that they are willing to put their names forward.

Didn't Margaret Thatcher negotiate a very good pension for retired PM's? [not saying that all candidates would do it for that reason, but some might...]

I do wonder how serious some of the so called candidates are though. I would have thought that most would be looking to be 'the one after next' because I think we can be sure that whoever is the next PM is going to fail. Why would it be otherwise? Same party split, same HoC split, same country split, nothing has changed, in fact if anything it is more uncertain from the Brexit point as the Brexit party did not get the resounding victory they expected. As for Raab, where has he been for the past few years? It has been proven time and time again that austerity politics does not work, and yet, there he was on Marr on Sunday morning, talking about tax cuts. Tax cuts which will mean cuts to public services.

I think they are all jockeying, doing the 'after you' bit, making alliances ( remember Gove and Johnson?), it will be like the Tudor court with all the promising and plotting.

It is odd. Maybe they have a cunning plan?

I like Rory Stewart, he seems sensible and pragmatic and doesn’t believe we should leave without a deal. However, I think he’s probably not got a lot of chance.

Jeremy Hunt has warned that a no-deal brexit would be "suicidal" for the Tory Party. No mention of the damage it would do to the country. There is not a single Tory politician who ever put country before party. TM certainly never did, nor did Cameron.

I know that Boris is the favourite, but the favourite doesn’t usually win in the Conservative Party.
I’m hoping Raab will win it. Maybe a sweepstake is in order.
