Danny Baker should be sacked immediately

Whether or not he meant to be racist, what on earth was he thinking? Where has he been? I cannot believe that anyone in this day and age would do this. I have a friend who is in her late 60s and was reprimanded at work for using a homophobic term. A term that was used back in the 70s and earlier. She said she had no idea it shouldn't be used. I said to her 'where have you been for the last 40 odd years?'

mycat why don’t you dial it down? No one has called for him to be hanged as well you know. And no his being sacked is not the end of it. Exploring what on earth made him do it is relevant, why it mattered and the appropriate response is all worth discussing - a 2 day old baby, a postpartum mother who has already been subject to online racist abuse ( hello UKIP inter allia) and a nationwide broadcaster paid £300k of our money who at the very least can’t think and then can’t properly apologise and who told the BBC to f* off when they rang to sack home. What’s to not discuss?

Please would someone explain to me why a person of mixed heritage is described as 'black' surely she is as much white as black? This has puzzled me for a long time.

Of course we need to discuss it and he quite rightly deserves to be sacked.

We will never know why he did it but my suspicion is drink was involved as he was always known to be w heavy drinker and thats no excuse

I disagree Mycat - I don't see pages of abuse, I see many, many excellent posts challenging racism (casual or otherwise) in all its forms and I think that is to be absolutely applauded.

The term black was used to refer to anyone who suffered prejudice or abuse because of their racial heritage. Usually based on the way they looked, the colour of their skin or certain facial characteristics.

It is possible to be mainly “white” in your heritage and still be subject to abuse because of a darker skin tone or even a flat nose!

I have some doubts about it myself, as I do about the term white but dislike “person of colour” even more. We’re all people of colour.

I still hope for the day when it will be as irrelevant as the size of your feet......

I don't know who Danny Baker is (or I didn't before I read this thread) but the left/right issue came up on one of the royal threads, with no justification, just like on this one.
It just doesn't make sense.

I mentioned in my post earlier that I can't understand how Gonegirl can think it is ok to post a link to this racist tweet. It's just circulating the nastiness. I notice she hasn't responded, probably because there is no excuse for jumping on the racist bandwagon.

I don't really know who he is, but he should be ashamed - and how come some of these media people behave disgracefully, disappear from view for a short time then reappear on another channel or even the same channel, as if nothing has happened and for which they are paid handsomely.

no Ilovecheese you are right, the left/right wing issue doesn't make any sense. We are talking here about racism, a big mouth and overinflated sense of his own importance and infallability. Republicanism/left/right wing just does not enter into it and comments bringing it up are irrelevant and inflammatory. This was a vile thing to do, whether it was a child of Royalty or of anyone else.

I’d forgotten that - I’d just seen the tweet at that time but on reflection the words can stand after hearing his ‘apology ‘ and ‘explanation’, I never said hang him though

nonnie may I explain I am the mother of mixed race children and it is entirely up to the person the self to identify with which race they feel comfortable with HOWEVER a person with mixed black heritage is rarely going to look white so if they have tanned skin, dark eyes and dark curly hair it would be most strange to call themselves white and not accurate but I guess they could if they wanted to

I believe that word 'coloured' is not acceptable either.
Apparently it's OK, Nonnie as Dianne Abbott uses the term 'a person of colour' (slightly different though).
