I wondered how long it would be - this BBC employed racist has tweeted a photo( which I won’t post) likening Archie to a chimpanzee. He’s now deleted it and issued a totally inadequate apology ( not that there could be an adequate one). What an absolute shit - I really think he should be sacked immediately

I'll just carry on calling them 'people' I think, maryeliza

maryeliza54 Thu 09-May-19 16:19:08

That won’t always work though will it? I don’t describe my black friends as black as in ‘I’m off to lunch with my black frirnd’ But if she was racially abused I’d sure as hell say ‘My black friend was racially abused’ As that would be relevant.

Maryeliza

I Think it’s silly to use such over the top language to be honest.

But that seems to be the fashion to replace proper reasoned debate.

Supernan Thu 09-May-19 16:21:09

I just do NOT believe him. He knew exactly what he was doing. His behaviour since does him no favours either.

Baggs Thu 09-May-19 16:21:53

To Trisher Baggs and Gonegirl I am truly shocked to the core that you could defend a racist arxxhoxx and see nothing wrong with your views I truly cannot believe what world your heads are in, in 2019 and I am completely lost for words

I can't speak for the others but could you cite where I defended (your word) a racist, please, Bluebelle?
My saying that comparing human babies to other primate babies is not racist when it's not used in a racist way (I gave examples) is not a defence of anything except that kind of comparison, in which, obviously, I see no harm as I compared my own baby to other ape babies. My point is that we are apes too.

You and one other poster also asked me in your shocked and horrified voices where I have been all my life not to know that certain tropes are "common forms" of racist abuse. My answer is: not among people who use racist tropes. I still don't really get the banana one—well, I get that it's used as an insult; I just don't get why. Because white people eat bananas too.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-May-19 16:23:26

baggs can you see over the top of you hole????

maryeliza54 Thu 09-May-19 16:24:10

mycat I have not continued using that language and the debate on here (mostly) has been very sensible.

Nonnie Thu 09-May-19 16:24:27

Thanks for the responses but maybe I wasn't clear with my question. I do agree that anyone of whatever colour/shade should decide for themselves about their own description. What confuses me is why others talking about people they know of, but don't know, always refer to them as 'black' when they are of mixed heritage.

I know someone very well, who some would call a celebrity, who has the term black used about them all the time but feels very strongly that they are both black and white. They feel that their success is sometimes assumed to be because of positive discrimination when it is not, it is down to sheer hard work for which they don't always get the credit. When we are all expected to be PC all the time surely it is only fair to describe someone as mixed heritage if that is what they are?

maryeliza54 Thu 09-May-19 16:26:02

Baggs you just don’t know when to quit do you. Have a ?

SirChenjin Thu 09-May-19 16:27:04

Oh Baggs - stop digging now, please. Or at least do a bit of research.

Baggs Thu 09-May-19 16:27:09

I don't know if Danny Baker intended the tweet he posted as an insult. He says he didn't and deleted it. Other people say he did mean it.

When I saw the picture in question, I just thought it was stupid. New born babies can't walk.

I think that treating chimpanzees as if they were human (dressing them up, etc) is wrong.

Although, to be honest, I did like that PG Tips ad.

Gonegirl Thu 09-May-19 16:28:33

Look Sparklefizz - the Evening Standard's got the pic too! shockgrin

Danny Baker

maryeliza54 Thu 09-May-19 16:29:47

I think I generally say black unless I know the person is mixed race, If I knew what they called themselves ( as I do with friends and colleagues) I’d use that term. The most important thing is what not to say like coloured or half caste

Gonegirl Thu 09-May-19 16:30:45

Bluebell the answer to the point you raise is - I would never defend a racist arsehole.

Gonegirl Thu 09-May-19 16:32:55

Interesting that the Beeb has sacked him for lack of judgement. Racism not mentioned by them anywhere.

Sparklefizz Thu 09-May-19 16:34:04

Gonegirl Look Sparklefizz - the Evening Standard's got the pic too! shockgrin

Sigh ..... Yes, Gone, you're being childish now.

I saw the the pic when I was reading the news online and posted "Shocked" at the start of this thread, which was long before you posted the link .... it's just that I personally wouldn't dream of re-circulating such a horrible comment, whereas you chose to do so.

Nonnie Thu 09-May-19 16:37:06

Gonegirl whether or not he meant it as racist, anyone in a highly paid public position should know better and behave appropriately. I am reminded of Jeremy Corbyn calling Teresa May a 'stupid woman'. Whether you agree with him or not, in his position he should have known better. I still believe that those in the public eye should set a good example even if that does mean I am out of date.

Lily65 Thu 09-May-19 16:37:09

Baggs you are hilarious really Not.

crazyH Thu 09-May-19 16:37:12

Oh dear....I go out for an hour and this thread has taken a life of its own......?

Gonegirl Thu 09-May-19 16:40:45

No. You are quite right Nonnie.

lemongrove Thu 09-May-19 16:41:21

That’ll teach you not to go out crazyH.....anyway it’s cold and rainy out there.☔️

Gonegirl Thu 09-May-19 16:42:07

I think sacking might have been a bit hard though. I believe he meant it harmlessly. As I have already said. Once or twice. smile

Gonegirl Thu 09-May-19 16:44:27

Sparklefuzz I don't think I am being childish. Just thought you might be interested to know I'm not the only one showing the tweet to the general public.

Gonegirl Thu 09-May-19 16:44:50

fizz! Not fuzz!!!

crazyH Thu 09-May-19 16:47:44
