Horrified by Alabama Abortion law

I am horrified by the new ruling that makes abortion illegal in the state of Alabama with not even exceptions for rape or incest victims .

The only exception is if the mothers life is endangered . Am I right in thinking this new law puts women back 100 years with no ability to make decisions about their own bodies ?

What are your thoughts ?

By "desperate" I mean dragging out every possible circustance under the sun, no matter how unusual.

Sorry Gonsgirl but I have no intention of lifelong abstinence. So I might get pregnant (v unlikely agewise but has been known to ocassionally happen). And if I did I would have an abortion & it would not affect the existance of my foetus any differently to any "special circumstances" foetus. It would cease to exist just the same!

The manufacturers are hardly going to claim 100% effectiveness, but used properly many modern methods are. If used properly.

Gonegirl Sat 18-May-19 15:45:28

How late in the pregnancy are you talking notanan?

SirChenjin Sat 18-May-19 15:45:52

Yes I know what you meant Gone - and those circumstances are the real life actual reality, as irritating as that must be for you.

Mycatisahacker Sat 18-May-19 15:46:38

social reasons is deciding late on you don’t want the baby

Mmmmmm it’s a good enough reason for the mum it’s a good enough reason.

And again late terminations for flimsy reasons are almost non existent.

And I use the term flimsy reasons because it’s probably what anti choice forced birthers say.

no body has to get pregnant

Utterly ridiculous statement

SirChenjin Sat 18-May-19 15:46:40

No Gone they really really aren’t 100%. It’s so important that people are educated on this.

Gonegirl Sat 18-May-19 15:47:16

Considering the tests from the chemist work practically from day 1, I assume you would have the abortion in the first couple of weeks. That's fine.

Gonegirl Sat 18-May-19 15:47:43

I disagree Sirch

SirChenjin Sat 18-May-19 15:48:32

Disagree with what Gone? The facts?

rosecarmel Sat 18-May-19 15:48:57

"The manufacturers are hardly going to claim 100% effectiveness, but used properly many modern methods are. If used properly."

100% effective -- including virgin births, too?

Glammy57 Sat 18-May-19 15:49:45

I’m with Maryeliza54, on this. It is a woman’s choice to decide what she does with her body. Banning abortion will be regressing to pre-1970’s, backstreet terminations.

Gonegirl Sat 18-May-19 15:49:51

You are saying that a good quality Durex condom used with anti-sperm gel can be ineffective. No it can't.

maryeliza54 Sat 18-May-19 15:50:05

90% are up to 13 weeks and only 0.1% after 24 weeks. The anomaly scan is at 20 weeks when most foetal abnormalities are discovered.

notanan2 Sat 18-May-19 15:51:04

If used properly

Like never brewing a tummy bug that hasnt shown its symptoms yet when having sex on the pill

Like the coil implanting and getting pregnant with the coil still in the womb as well. Thats the woman's fault for not "using it properly" is it?

Like the surgeon not tying tubes properly. Silly wimmin not "using it properly" and making excuses again huh?

Like condoms splitting despite only using water based lube. Can assure you, this happens!

Like knowing that the morning after pill gets less effective the later you take it but its a bank holiday....

SirChenjin Sat 18-May-19 15:51:51

The tests from the chemist assume that 1. You have access to the chemist and 2. The means to buy one.

An abortion within 2 weeks of taking that test on day 1 of a missed period? Gone with all due respect, do you know how menstrual cycles and accessing abortions actually work?

SirChenjin Sat 18-May-19 15:55:00

And I should probably add condoms to that list. If you genuinely believe that condoms with spermicide are 100% effective you should read this and educate yourself www.nhs.uk/conditions/contraception/male-condoms/

Gonegirl Sat 18-May-19 15:55:33

You'd better stick to the method I advocated in my post 15:49:51 notanan. grin

notanan2 Sat 18-May-19 15:55:38

You are saying that a good quality Durex condom used with anti-sperm gel can be ineffective. No it can't.

For a start, Durex are crap! I would rather have no sex than nasty Durex sex! I am fussy and only like the more expensive brands. If you think that Durex are the gold standard you dont know much about condoms...

Every split condom incident Ive had were nasty cheap Durex. I banned them at home!

Gonegirl Sat 18-May-19 15:57:47

I don't know how accessing abortions work. But from what I have said I believe it is possible to have a very early abortion without the need to leave it until the fetus is more formed. And even viable.

Gonegirl Sat 18-May-19 15:58:54

notanan it's a long time since I participated in sex using a condom! grin

Gonegirl Sat 18-May-19 15:59:49

Blimey! How many "split condom incidents" have you have?!!!

notanan2 Sat 18-May-19 16:00:28

Gonegirl thats not how abortions work.

You cant access an abortion unless you have a confirmed viable pregnancy for a start! Jesus wept!

notanan2 Sat 18-May-19 16:03:21

Plus if you dont have 500+ to hand you gotta go the NHS route, which has wait lists just like everything else.

But good god HOW can you think you can have an abortion without being viably pregnant???

SirChenjin Sat 18-May-19 16:04:13

It is possible but certainly not an option that is available for all girls and women who want them, and certainly not within 2 weeks of the first day of a missed period.

I’m quite astounded by some of what I’ve read on here and only highlights the fact that if women old enough to be on Gransnet don’t know the basics then how on Earth can we expect young girls and women with less life experience to know about contraception, their own bodies, body autonomy and how to access safe abortion.
