Head teacher at Anderton County Primary school has been threatened because the school issuing the Outsider books. Jess Philips is the local MP, she attended today to support the school and was told by one protester that those who support the use of the books were islamophobic. I'm in support of the schools, the books and Jess Philips.

To be honest when I first heard this I was ‘for goodness sake they are kids’ but other posters and google show it’s very mild and in no way like the awful mermaids nonsense from the radical LGBT quarter.

The protesters remind me of those around abortion clinics.

Frightening

I'm absolutely with the school on this. What I would describe as "indoctrination" would be parents who implant the idea in young people's minds that gay people are outside of normal society and their relationships are, at best, abnormal and inferior and, at worst, an abomination. Homosexuality is no longer illegal but discrimination based on a person's sexuality is, so, apart from the fact that it's wrong to ignore discriminatory behaviour, it's important that children should consider not only the ethical but also the legal perspective.

I believe that there should be acceptance of dress codes and religious beliefs in public life. However, I also think that when religious beliefs and cultural norms impinge on the lives of other minorities and lead to intolerant attitudes and behaviour directed at them, that needs to be addressed.

I would just mention, though, that I'm fairly sure some parents in other schools have objected to their children having sex education lessons dealing with subjects such as homosexuality, contraception, etc., so this attitude is not exclusively a Muslim one.

Okay Mycat and janeainsworth I will read up on this a bit more tomorrow. Perhaps taking it at face value I have been a little naive?

I’ll get back to you!

Oh bugger grin

Parents have been demonstrating outside Parkfield School in Birmingham since January because No Outsider books were read to a child audience by drag queens. BBC reported that Drag Story Time was to 'celebrate diversity'.

I would have been very unhappy if my D had experienced that in Primary school. This seems far more appropriate for a secondary school curriculum.

Mycatisahacker Mon 20-May-19 23:42:46

Mmmm drag queens really? Seriously is that fact or fiction?

Eloethan

Yep Jacob Reece mogg supports the parents. He isn’t a Muslim last time I looked grin

maryeliza54 Tue 21-May-19 00:05:45

Ginny my understanding is that there were parental protests outside the school. Later some of the books from the No Outsiders programme were read by drag queens at an equality and diversity event put on in a local museum and parents were free obvs to take their children or not. It all looked like fun - better than the average pantomime where children first experience drag queeens usually

DoesAnyoneKnow Tue 21-May-19 06:41:11

An exclusion zone sounds sensible.

The right to remove children from lessons is going to be removed.

I wouldn't want my family taught as fact that humans can change biological sex or that biological sex and childhood are a social construct.

Drag queens at Parkfield Fake News

The Drag Queen story came from an event in the US where they read children stories at a library....a purely voluntary event.

anja I’m sure this link shows my version to be correct. I try to be very careful about my facts unlike some posters and I quite resent having something I checked being called fake news.

maryeliza54 Tue 21-May-19 07:30:51

And does you should check your facts as well - what you’ve posted is a very misleading account of the issue - as was Ginny’s post. I never cease to be amazed at posters who think facts don’t matter.

Iam64 Tue 21-May-19 07:37:50

DoesAnyoneKnow, there's no suggestion children of any age are to be taught 'as fact ' that humans can change biological sex. These are primary school children and so far as I understand it, the No Outsider books have been added to the school library. That adds to the diversity of books available and means the teachers in lower school may read one of them during story time.
My 4 year old grandson asked his mummy if two men can dance together, after seeing a photograph of this. Yes she said, like Uncle X and Uncle Y do. Oh , can two girls dance together? Yes they can. Oh, off he went happily question answered. I'm so relieved he wasn't subjected to some kind of nonsense about homosexuality being abhorrent, told that no, two men/women could never 'dance' together. Surely, this kind of age appropriate information is just what the school aims to do.
Homosexuality was illegal when many of us were in our teens. I have friends now in their late 60's and 70's who lived secret lives as a result. Do we really want to return to that kind of horror?

Kandinsky Tue 21-May-19 07:48:42

This is a difficult one because I can see both sides.
I know one thing though, if it was white Christians protesting they’d be a lot more outrage on social media.
As it is it’s remarkable quiet on certain sites.......

maryeliza54 Tue 21-May-19 07:51:39

I really don’t understand your post Kadinsky. There is plenty of criticism of the protesters on all types of media.

I read the story here on the BBC 30 March 2019.
If I misunderstood anything about it then I apologise, until then I take it as I read it.

GracesGranMK3 Tue 21-May-19 08:02:34

The blocking pavement stratagem is not, apparently, the only one being used in a way that takes it over the peaceful protest line. It sounded to me as if some of the phone calls to "tell" people to keep keep their children at home were more than just informative.

I like Jess Phillips more the more I see of her. She was justifiably upset. The young man, who seems to have decided to become a sort of flying picket, does not seem to want others to be allowed to disagree with his views. Calling JP Islamaphobic for not agreeing with the protest makes me feel he should have had the classes when he was young just as the elderly men I come across on another forums would have hopefully been more tolerant had the had this part of their education. They are both Islamaphobic and homophobic! As far as I can see, in the the case of the young man and these old guys the issue is purely cultural. Growing up knowing that personal views are no excuse for, as JP comment, deciding which legal minority you will treat as equal and which you won't, has to be a good thing.

LullyDully Tue 21-May-19 08:03:57

(The school is Anderton Park, know if well. ) I would like to see these books before I judge.

I do believe that children have a right to sex and relationship education. It is difficult when parents disagree. At one time you could withdraw your children from Sex ed, so it was put on the Science curriculum to prevent this is happening.

It is a very sensitive issue and can only be solved through talking. There has been an issue with whipping up a crowd which never helps. Talk can only take place in a calm atmosphere.

It is hard for parents to tolerate any topic taught which is against their moral beliefs.....however children must be made aware of the variety of thought, that is what education is about. No easy answer.

Kandinsky Tue 21-May-19 08:05:53

Not seen much on Mumsnet maryeliza54 not much at all.
I’m sure if Nigel Farage was leading the protests MN would be in meltdown.
That’s my point.

maryeliza54 Tue 21-May-19 08:55:32

Well Kadinsky your previous post didn’t say that at all did it?

maryeliza54 Tue 21-May-19 08:59:07

Ginny you’ve not read it properly at all - there is nothing in that article which says the drag queens were reading the stories in school.

sodapop Tue 21-May-19 09:06:32

I agree with janeainsworth her post says it all for me.

Mycatisahacker Tue 21-May-19 09:09:26

Jess Phillips is a fantastic woman and her constituents are lucky to have her.

However I don’t think this issue will be solved by talking. Those of firm often intolerant faiths don’t do talking over issues like this.

We either capitulate to their feelings or go ahead anyway.

It took a few years to convince authorities of the Trojan horse issue.

Sensibilities and worry about being called islamaphobic are still as huge as they were around the child grooming gangs.

We either step up and stand up for western liberal values or we don’t.

There isn’t a middle ground here really is there?

Eglantine21 Tue 21-May-19 09:15:55

What a fuss about books when most children nowadays will be in a classroom with other children who have two mummies or two daddies.

Some of the loveliest families I know have same sex parents.

It would be very wrong to give in to this kind of intimidation.

Alexa Tue 21-May-19 09:27:11

There are religionists who idolise religious laws, and are unaware of how to interpret those laws with love and understanding.
