Well, there's 10 left in the race to be our next Prime Minister and voting starts tomorrow.

Who would you LIKE to be the next leader of the Tory party?

And who would you BET on?

Tory Grandee Chris Patten Calls Boris Johnson ‘Mendacious’ and ‘Incompetent’

There are few figures in British politics quite as divisive as Boris Johnson, who is staking a claim to succeed Theresa May as leader of the Conservatives and prime minister. Many in his own party are openly critical.

For the pro-Brexit flank of the party, he’s their last chance to get Brexit done right. But for Tory europhiles like Chris Patten he’s a “disaster.”

The Tory grandee, a former cabinet minister and last governor of Hong Kong, used candid language to describe Johnson’s qualifications for the top job and his track record as foreign minister.

“He’s lied his way through life, he’s lied his way through politics, he’s a huckster with a degree of charm to which I am immune,” Patten said in an interview with Bloomberg Television in London. “As well as being mendacious he’s incompetent.”

But Patten also thinks that Johnson has a good chance of becoming prime minister: “I think he would be a very, very bad choice indeed but I suspect it may well happen.”

Well he is certainly a comedian! ?

Daisymae Thu 13-Jun-19 20:18:54

I said a few years ago that if Boris became PM I would join the Labour party. I had a look at how much this would cost me today.blush

Gonegirl Thu 13-Jun-19 20:16:33

He's fun. And I think he's probably very clever.

Elvive Thu 13-Jun-19 20:07:54

so anyway, what do people like about Boris?

Labaik Thu 13-Jun-19 20:03:48

Your humour is far too subtle for simpletons like me GG54..

Lilyflower Thu 13-Jun-19 20:02:32

Boris.

Labaik Thu 13-Jun-19 20:02:28

Chris Patten has just said he's a liar and not to be trusted.

GabriellaG54 Thu 13-Jun-19 20:02:07

My last comment was to Ginny42 wink

GabriellaG54 Thu 13-Jun-19 19:59:40

Ever heard of a TIC comment?

M0nica Thu 13-Jun-19 19:57:52

I thought Gabriela was being sarcastic, not serious.

Personally I would sack the lot of them, all 640 of them. For any of them to stand for parliament again they would have to prove to that they had worked right outside politics for at least 10 years. The rest of the MPs would need to be fulfil the work criteria and be new to the house. The PM could then be chosen from those MP's who qualified for re-election.

Curlywhirly Thu 13-Jun-19 19:51:03

Labaik

And despite all you mention in your post being common knowledge, 114 Tory MPs have voted for him. What were they thinking?!!! Have they no morals at all? The Tory Party have never sunk so low. The only consolation for me if he does become PM, is to sit back and watch him unravel.

jura2 Thu 13-Jun-19 19:46:00

Mine neither, for sure.

Never thought I could ever say that- but I would trust Corbyn with the country's purse and future, 1000x times more. And I am NO Corbynite!

Ginny42 Thu 13-Jun-19 19:44:32

GG54- I cannot believe that an intelligent, educated professional woman thinks the list cited by Labaik 'perfect credentials for a future PM'.

Labaik Thu 13-Jun-19 19:37:50

'Those seem like the perfect credentials for a future PM'...in your world, perhaps, but not in mine.....

GabriellaG54 Thu 13-Jun-19 19:31:18

Labaik

Those seem like the perfect credentials for a future PM.
At least they are out in the public domain, not hidden and denied.
grin??

Elvive Thu 13-Jun-19 19:30:52

Ha ha, Misha, absolutely no chance of an answer to that one from G.

Or anybody else .

You are clearly an evil leftie , who is trying to trick people and pretending to be asking a question.

CedarC Thu 13-Jun-19 19:28:01

Not one of them, they are all backstabbers.

GabriellaG54 Thu 13-Jun-19 19:27:10

I would strongly advise you to Google your question(s) and/or email Boris himself at the Hoc or his constituency offices.
Addresses can be found on the government website.

That way, you are getting the news straight from the horse's mouth and not my biased views, which I certainly wouldn't dream of inflicting on a remainer.
'Tis not my role to change your already made-up mind.

Labaik Thu 13-Jun-19 19:05:03

From another forum [with permission to share] 'So it looks like we are headed for a Boris Johnson lead hard Brexit. So what do we actually know about his credentials for the role of high office. Well as Mayor of London he promised to end rough sleeping by 2012. It doubled under his leadership. He promised there would be manned ticket offices at every station; he closed all of London's ticket offices.
He conspired with Darius Guppy a fellow Old Etonian, to try to hire thugs to attack News of the World journalist, Stuart Collier. Just let that soak in for a moment. Our future PM arranging to have someone beaten up because they were asking questions about one of his chums.
He spent £322,00 on armoured water cannon trucks that were made illegal in this country (thank god) and later sold for scrap for £11000. Let’s just think about this for a moment. He bought 3 armoured trucks, fitted with water cannons, to use on civilians. In London.
He decided to build the garden bridge. A £53m folly that was never built and cost the taxpayers £43m.
As foreign secretary gaffes and inappropriate remarks were virtually daily events. There were the jokes about dead bodies in Libya and the singing of verses by Rudyard Kipling in Myanmar. There was his inaccurate statement that the detained British Iranian national Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe had been in Iran training journalists , which then led to her being told her sentence could be double. He’s said that Muslim women looked like bank robbers and letter boxes.
The foreign minister Alan Duncan said that one countries foreign minister had asked him what was it like being Mr Johnson's "pooper scooper" because he had cleared up his mess all the time.
We know that he is a habitual liar, he has lied about affairs and matters of paternity. He has been sacked twice in the past for lying. In 1988 from The Times for fabricating a quote in an article, and in 2004 as shadow arts minister of the Tory Party for lying about an extra-marital affair.
He flips flops. One moment writing anti Brexit articles the next pro. One moment he’s eulogising Turkey, the next demonising it. One moment Trump is Ignorant', 'out of his mind' and 'unfit to be President' the next he’s the greatest leader ever. '

paddyann Thu 13-Jun-19 18:53:31

so 9000 Scottish Tories( I can never believe there are any never mind 9000) get to vote for a leader of a party we haven't voted into power since 1955 thats NINETEEN FIFTY FIVE ,to pass a brexit we voted against .We are supposed to accept that this is democracy....ha bloody ha .

Misha14 Thu 13-Jun-19 18:50:50

Please GbriellaG54 will you tell me why you think Boris would be a good prime minister? What are his policies that will help the less advantaged in our society?

dizzygran Thu 13-Jun-19 18:49:14

It looks like it will be Bojo - hopefully with Jeremy Hunt. I think Gove has shot himself in the foot. I would hate to see Corbyn - I alwaya liked David Milliband , but I don't suppose he would want to come back.

Urmstongran Thu 13-Jun-19 18:38:22

Yorkshiregirl I’m not sure who you mean? Which lady?

Ginny42 Thu 13-Jun-19 18:35:44

They must have very little respect for us and the entire country if they are prepared to unleash a known liar, racist and misogynist to be their leader and ergo ours too.

Reading through this thread my mood veered from laughter to wanting to just weep.

I can only imagine that they are thrilled to be getting a tax reduction on their MP's salaries and they're prepared to sell their souls to the devil for a place in his cabinet.
