Calling one who dares to criticise him (albeit in a leaked document/telegram) "wacky" and "a very stupid guy"

Funny that he never seemed to think that of Kim Dannoch until Dannochs opinions of Trump came to light. hmm

Although it seems to be the psychiatric term of the day, Trump does seem to be exhibiting the traits of a Narcissist.

MaizieD Fri 19-Jul-19 13:48:07

We all know that he is passionately patriotic and there is nothing wrong with that of course.

What on earth does that have to do with it? Does patriotism excuse bullying and racism?

M0nica Fri 19-Jul-19 13:59:08

David I don’t like or agree with Trump but his policies appeal to a growing number of voters over there

I am not sure that is so. Have a look at these figures. projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/ The figures move around but are currently steady stating. He has had a deficit of approval from the day of his inauguration.

je patriotic? zenophobic and racist would be nearer the mark and in his recent behaviour - working everyone up to a frenzy of racism and then deprecating it and saying 'nothing to do with me'

GillT57 Fri 19-Jul-19 14:02:38

Patriotism is not the same as racism. Patriots support defend their country not just their own ethnic group. Standing in front of a crowd of ardent believers, feeding them titbit of soundbites and glorying in their frenzy is not patriotism

Iam64 Fri 19-Jul-19 14:29:07

GillT57, absolutely spot on Patriotism is not the same as racism. I know we all try to avoid bringing Hitler into discussions but honestly, those rallies in todays US are similar to those in Germany in he 1930's. One man bringing crowds to their feet, cheering total nonsense and scary nonsense at that.

annodomini Fri 19-Jul-19 14:54:34

Patriotic draft dodger?

suziewoozie Fri 19-Jul-19 14:57:34

And five times to boot

Lessismore Fri 19-Jul-19 15:07:58

You can be patriotic about a country that is home to many races.

MaizieD Fri 19-Jul-19 15:25:37

Off course you can, Less. Even about a country which was built entirely on immigration from all over the globe.

The few native Americans left must be far from impressed by their President's 'patriotism'

rosecarmel Fri 19-Jul-19 15:28:20

The word patriotic has many nuances and plenty of U.S. presidents never served in the military, no different from other Americans who never served-

Plenty of Americans would agree he's attempting to defend the borders, they would also agree those attempts have been anywhere from casual to excessive-

Personality is a percentage of the rating .. So .. I'm surprised it isn't lower .. ?

suziewoozie Fri 19-Jul-19 15:37:29

That’s a very misleading post rose. More presidents have done military service than have not. Also remember how Trump rubbished McCain because he was taken prisoners?

rosecarmel Fri 19-Jul-19 15:42:44

Paywall

rosecarmel Fri 19-Jul-19 15:46:32

Suzie, my point is clear- The word patriotic is nuanced- It isn't reserved specifically for people who served-

rosecarmel Fri 19-Jul-19 15:49:50

Paywall? Bummer- My apologies-

In a netshell, Native Americans have yet to be given what's needed-

rosecarmel Fri 19-Jul-19 15:51:25

There are more Native Americans than Muslims-

MaizieD Fri 19-Jul-19 16:03:45

In a netshell, Native Americans have yet to be given what's needed

That really doesn't tell us anything at all. rosecarmel

I'm only addressing the racism and hypocrisy of a President who singles out some people of immigrant stock, among a practically entire nation of immigrant stock (apart from the remaining native Americans), including his own family, and tells them to go home. The real natives must be a bit hmm WTF!

jura2 Fri 19-Jul-19 16:08:52

Remind me - Trump and his friends and supporters just hated Obama's America and did everything they could and more to undermine everything he wanted to achieve- did they all go 'back home where they came from'?

Gonegirl Fri 19-Jul-19 16:12:35

Yes MaizieD that's true about the native Americans. Wonder what they think about Trump saying that?! grin

jura2 Fri 19-Jul-19 16:16:29

rosecarmel, you are right about patriotism. I know many conscienscous (sp?) objectors or people with disabilities who did not serve but love this country.

A massive difference with a selfish multiple dodger- who misused money and power to selfishly dodge sad

rosecarmel Fri 19-Jul-19 17:25:48

Maizie, what is your point? I've no doubt that you are aware that Native Americans have been egregiously neglected- Would me telling you what they need inspire you to provide it? How long do you think they've been thinking WTF? And why care just about what they think of Trumps ignorance and prejudice when for so long they've been ignored?

We have had prejudice presidents in the past, mass deportations, internment camps, genocide, slavery and wars- His prejudice, like others in the past, is awful- He is a product of a disgusting, gritty, depressing era who hasn't changed much with time, much like presidents in the past-

He is not unique in that regard- Only equally as ugly- To only talk about him, or what Native Americans think this minute, and not American history as a whole, is missing the point-

rosecarmel Fri 19-Jul-19 17:42:34

Jura, do have you any idea how many Democrats were also not happy with President Obama?

Iam64 Fri 19-Jul-19 18:08:34

I’m missing something in translation rosecarmel. Yes I’m aware native Americans had and continue to have a very raw deal, haven’t seen anyone saying different.
Yes, not every Democrat saw Obama as entirely positive.
Previous presidents in the recent past have presided over disasters, wars, invasions etc, I’m defending none if those disasters.
Trump is IMO not ‘equally ugly’, he is much worse. Which previous President has been so bliddy rude and dismissive of his allies, if other leaders of state and of his own political opponents.
I’m not even going to mention his disgusting misogyny - whoops , I did

Fennel Fri 19-Jul-19 18:56:02

rosecarmel your input is much appreciated by those of us in the UK.
Most of us have no idea of the history of the USA over the last 2-300 years. And don't realise how different it is from our own.
We don't know the story of the indigenous American tribes, let alone the history of black slavery. And how these still influence current American politics.
imo we might speak the same language, but we're miles apart.

Iam64 Fri 19-Jul-19 19:04:56

Speak for yourself Fennel. I'm not suggesting I know the history of the US to degree level but I'm certainly aware of the history of slavery and the way the indigenous tribes were treated.
Any visit to the USA means its unavoidable to come face to face with the legacy of slavery and the treatment of the native Americans.

Cherrytree59 Fri 19-Jul-19 19:15:48

I echo Fennel and thank rosecarmel for her input.

It is not so long ago that we were watching American cowboy films presenting American cowboys as the good guys and the North Americans Indians as the baddies.
The Mexicans were always portrayed as the bad guys in the spaghetti westerns.

I think Trump still believes that he is in one such Western where he is the Hero.
Unfortunately he is not yet riding off into the sunset ?
