I can imagine we will be horror struck as next week plays out. The cabinet will be a sight to behold.

Eyore heads off into the sunset.?

lemongrove Sat 20-Jul-19 14:41:11

I don’t think any of our politicians puts the country before either themselves or their party now, and perhaps they never did, we just thought they did.

Urmstongran Sat 20-Jul-19 14:54:21

Note he didn’t do the honourable thing and resign as a Cabinet Minister for his beliefs (like David Davis, Boris and Dominic Raab). Just saying.

Labaik Sat 20-Jul-19 14:57:08

Boris doing the honourable thing ? Boris who tossed a coin to decide whether to be leave or remain. Boris who is responsible for that poor woman still in jail in Iran?? You're not serious, surely? Honourable my foot angry

HootyMcOwlface Sat 20-Jul-19 15:08:47

I’m going to order some Valium, I can’t cope with seeing Johnson’s ugly mug much more!

Lessismore Sat 20-Jul-19 15:26:40

Eyore heads off into the sunset.?

What does that mean please?

Caledonai14 Sat 20-Jul-19 15:44:53

Thanks MaizieD for your explanation and the link about so-called gold-plating, where - if I understand it correctly - a particular government over-enthusiastically complies with an EU request, leading citizens to think the difficulties are being caused by the EU.

It suits the Brexit movement to believe that we have been dominated by Brussels. When the truth comes out in history, future generations will wonder where our brains were when we crashed out of a stable alliance into the arms of Trump's mad instability.

Especially if we are led forth shudder by Boris the Kipperswickerfibber.

Anyone else feel that Iran is using us as a show of strength because it knows we officially don't have the backing of the EU or America at the moment. We're just a tiny little island out on it's own that still thinks it's ruler of an empire. Still, when we become a vassal state of America we'll be ok...sad

M0nica Sat 20-Jul-19 20:45:03

Do not forget that most of EU law has now been incorporated into British law. Much of it is law that Britain would ve enacted anyway, but as the EU was already doing it, saw no reason to do the same thing twice.

paddyann Sat 20-Jul-19 20:56:16

Iran isn't using a show of stregth, the boats were off course ,they were entitled to board them and check them out..just as we would if Russian boats were sailing up the Thames ..but dont let facts get in the way of a Trumpesque story

M0nica Sat 20-Jul-19 21:25:09

But I do not think the ship was in Iranian waters. I read it was in Omani waters. The Straits of Hommuz are so narrow that all of them are the territorial waters of one country or the other.

It is a bit like the English Channel, all of it is territorial waters for France or Britain, but how often does either Britain or France board and check ships moving up and down that area of water?

Anniebach Sat 20-Jul-19 21:41:29

*Paddyann” the river Thames cannot be compared

At least 6 high profile Tories have approached the LDs about a vote of no confidence and attempting to thwart Brexit.

Johnson’s majority is to small for this story to be ignored.

Anyone take the DM? Seen the headline about Johnsons hefty furniture bill for no 10?
Wonder if it’s true?

GracesGranMK3 Sun 21-Jul-19 09:53:04

The article puts so much about Johnson in its place and tells us that worse may yet be to come. Thank you for posting the link Whitewave; sadly I would guess few will read it.

Furniture - it's a wonder he's capable of organising even that!

Luckygirl Sun 21-Jul-19 10:05:21

Our local MP - decent, hard-working on behalf of his constituents - plans to vote for this lying toad. How? Why? It is all beyond me. People know who he is and what he is like, yet they still vote for him - what is going on?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 21-Jul-19 10:18:00

Some of the rumours include Patel as Home Secretary, she who was dismissed for lying. (Cabinet of liars?) and for suggesting we starve Ireland into submission and Davis as chancellor - he who prepares for nothing and appears clueless over basic facts. Gove as NI Secretary, who hates the GFA.

I think I have never been so depressed over our future.

Jabberwok Sun 21-Jul-19 10:33:44

FGS paddyann, the tanker was in OMANI waters when it was illegally boarded by Iranian forces and hijacked into Iranian waters! The straits of Hormuz is so narrow that you are always in someone else's waters, more like the English Channel, (English /French). than the river Thames which doesn't have a shared space with another country so isn't even remotely the same!! Don't let facts get in the way of your hatred of England though!!!!

Whitewavemark2 Sun 21-Jul-19 10:39:17

Hands up all those who feel we will be in safe hands over the Iranian furore, when Johnson is crowned next week? He did so well over the Ratcliffe debacle.

Anyone ???

Project fear? The last three years have been more catastrophic than even the most pessimistic Remainer predicted

I looked it up (as I tend to) and for paddyannes delectation here is wha I wrote on another thread

Passage through the Gulf of Hormuz is governed by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Iran is a signatory to that Convention, but has regularly ignored its responsibilities under that treaty when in it chose to.

To reduce the risk of collision in the Strait, ships moving through it follow an agreed route, which is divided into lanes, each 2 miles wide, with a 2 mile separation lane between them. Inbound ships use one lane, outbound ships the other.

The Stena Imperio, was in the correct channel following the approved route.

Please do not try to curb paddyann There is nothing like a good old-fashioned rant from a good old-fashioned zenophobe to get a good giggle going and the day to a good start

Dinahmo Sun 21-Jul-19 13:10:06

It would seem that John Bolton, Trump's security adviser has been stirring and that evidence is growing that his team were involved in the Gibralter incident. Iran vowed to retaliate for our "piracy" which they did with the capture of the Stena Impero.

John Bolton is a hawk. He was in favour of the Vietnam War although he avoided fighting by joining the Maryland National Guard. His background apparently convinced Tehran that Bolton is set on forcible regime change
which is understandable given the rhetoric flowing from the White House.

Passage through the Straits of Hormuz is governed by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. American warships are already there in addition to the British Navy there is no need for the EU to intervene and "come to our aid".
