I know we knew this would happen but it didn't stop my heart sinking when it was confirmed. It's not even about party politics. It's about him. The country is in such a terrible position and the thought of him being the one trying to solve all the problems is farcical at best and utterly depressing.

Why should he be given a chance?

How about making the prize in a gameshow such as "The Chase" or "Eggheads" a crack at being PM? There's about much chance that the winner would make a success of it.

Elegran Wed 24-Jul-19 12:37:03

They must have thought that Johnson was the best of a useless bunch.

OmaforMaya Wed 24-Jul-19 12:37:26

At least he's been a good top of conversationparty

Elegran Wed 24-Jul-19 12:38:33

growstuff Get me out of here, I'm a celebrity? Love Island? Crackerjack?

moggie57 Wed 24-Jul-19 12:39:31

not for long . i can feel a general election coming up. boris the bad ..will be gone.

growstuff Wed 24-Jul-19 12:41:01

In any case, Brexiteers are always bleating on about being ruled by some kind of 'elite'. You don't get much more 'elite' that Johnson. How come HIS alleged intelligence doesn't make him an expert?

craftyone Wed 24-Jul-19 12:42:46

ahhh, the liberal snowflakes are en masse, dummy throwing. Whoopee doo da wine

growstuff Wed 24-Jul-19 12:44:24

I agree with you, moggie.

Why not, Elegran? However, those programmes aren't know for attracting intelligent contestants. People are claiming Johnson is intelligent, so if that's the criterion needed to be PM, I thought we could make it into a competition.

Maybe the next time the Tories need a new leader, they could hold a pub quiz rather than go through this long-winded process.

growstuff Wed 24-Jul-19 12:45:38

Oh dear! Seems the verbally challenged are out in force! :-(

painter45 Wed 24-Jul-19 12:49:24

Look what he did to Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe, Is this the best this country can come up with? I find it frightening.

MawBroonsback Wed 24-Jul-19 12:55:09

Coming late to the party, I am confused by this Lessismore - can you explain it for me please?

Brexit is like Schrodinger's Cat. The moment anybody does anything, the whole lot will come tumbling down. May never stood a chance, especially with the media against her. Johnson has no talents whatsoever appropriate to running a country.

Nanniejc1 Wed 24-Jul-19 12:58:15

Oh dear....all throwing their dummies out of the pram!??????

Shoequeen53 Wed 24-Jul-19 13:01:02

All I’ve seen is intelligent debate. Where’s the dummy throwing?

Rosina Wed 24-Jul-19 13:03:29

Give the man a chance. I thought his speech was fine. On the question of 'No deal' there are plenty of experts - including the former governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, who have publicly stated that a no deal would be no problem; it's our biggest bargaining tool anyway - for the EU no deal means no say!

Callistemon Wed 24-Jul-19 13:05:15

If the leader of the country were chosen individually, there is a danger that personal charisma and/or influence with the media could take over than real leadership qualities.
Evidence of that is easy to find.

It is and, of course, we are not voting for a President as we already have a Head of State. We have voted for the political parties of our choice and the PM in this country needs to be the leader of the party with the majority vote.

If the country voted for a leader separately than in a GE, then we could end up with a leader at odds with the main political party - and look what happens in countries where that is the system.

dragonfly46 Wed 24-Jul-19 13:09:01

I have no idea but typically it is a very childish remark. I was not aware that not finding a liar and a cheat a suitable candidate to run our country was throwing the proverbial dummy out of the pram.
Isn't democracy about allowing people to have their own opinions?
Brexit or no Brexit at this stage is immaterial as I cannot seeing anyone being able to execute it. There is always someone going to be there to block it. My personal views are irrelevant as this is a matter of fact.
Our country is in a very bad way and I am saddened by it all and the image we are projecting to the rest of the world.

Callistemon Wed 24-Jul-19 13:10:49

Isn't democracy about allowing people to have their own opinions?
Yes!
And the Johnson family seems to be a prime example of democracy in action as far as them having differing opinions but still remaining friends.

Elegran Wed 24-Jul-19 13:12:58

I am saying nothing about dummies, there are too many who would take any relevant comment as applying to them, personally.

smurkle Wed 24-Jul-19 13:26:24

I'm so chuffed boris is PM...cant be any worse than the others imo

Shoequeen53 Wed 24-Jul-19 13:30:32

Those words may come back to haunt you @smurkle.

Lessismore Wed 24-Jul-19 13:35:10

sorry one and all , I got a bit carried away . I watched a you tube video of our esteemed leader speaking French and those were the comments. I forgot the quotation marks.

At the risk of repeating myself I don't find B particularly linguistically capable.

Lessismore Wed 24-Jul-19 13:37:42

What exactly is a dummy throwing snowflake please?

How would i recognise one?

I'm pretty sure dragonfly isn't one.

CrazyGrandma2 Wed 24-Jul-19 13:46:52

Dragonfly46 what a well written post. I remember BJ railing against Gordon Brown becoming PM without facing a General Election - oh the irony. Many of his previous writings will come back to haunt him. It has been refreshing to read this thread and know that I am not alone in being disappointed , to say the least, that he is to be PM. Just to be clear, I no longer have any political allegiance. So sad that our country has come to this.

absthame Wed 24-Jul-19 13:50:44

Out of the whole group that initially were seeking to be PM the only one who has not changed position to suck up to Johnson has been Stewart. Taken together with Johnson's: story of deceit etc it says a lot about the lack of any moral compass or patriotism in the modern Conservatives
