The end of hopes of stopping a no deal Brexit?
Just announced.
The Queen will be asked by the government to suspend Parliament days after MPs return to work - and a matter of weeks before the Brexit deadline.
The BBC's political editor, Laura Kuenssberg, says it will make way for Boris Johnson's new administration to hold a Queen's Speech - laying out the government's future plans - on 14 October
But it means MPs are unlikely to have time to pass any laws that could stop the prime minister taking the UK out of the EU without a deal on 31 October.
A No 10 source said: "It's time a new government and new PM set out a plan for the country after we leave the EU
The idea of shutting down Parliament - known as prorogation - has caused controversy, with critics saying it would stop MPs being able to play their democratic part in the Brexit process.

What are you trying to achieve? It might be better if you come up with your own analogies given you don't like the last 2

Labaik Thu 29-Aug-19 15:39:43

Didn't a recent survey show that many leave voters also wanted the return of the death penalty? Maybe that will be next.

gillybob Thu 29-Aug-19 15:41:56

I'm not trying to achieve anything at all SirChenjin . I like a good analogy but those 2 weren't very good . sorry. wink

mostlyharmless Thu 29-Aug-19 15:45:04

Well if they put that question in a referendum, it might well get a majority agreeing.
But as referendums in this country are only ever LEGALLY ADVISORY, Parliament doesn’t have to put it into practice.

SirChenjin Thu 29-Aug-19 15:45:37

If you were a bit clearer as to what you were trying to show I might have been able to come up with a different one smile

SirChenjin Thu 29-Aug-19 15:47:17

Exactly harmless - although it appears they prefer to pick and choose which ones demonstrate 'the will of the people' and which ones are 'populist' and therefore should be ignored

"Here's a prayer for you. Got a pencil?"

"I goes like this. Let's see now: 'Protect me from knowing what I don't need to know. Protect me from even knowing that there are things that I don't know. Protect me from knowing that I decided not to know about the things that I decided not to know about. Amen' That's it. It's what you pray silently inside yourself anyway, so you may as well have it out in the open".

"Hmmm," said Arthur. "Well, thank you -

"There's another prayer that goes with it that's very important . . . It goes, 'Lord, lord, lord. Protect me from the consequences of the above prayer. Amen." And that's it. Most of the trouble people get into in life comes from missing out that last part."

It appears that only Remainers are allowed an opinion!!
When I was young I had a friend who would argue with her father, and if they held different views, she would say," well that's your opinion and this is my opinion" to which he would reply that's not an opinion that is B....Y rubbish.

SirChenjin Thu 29-Aug-19 15:51:47

Where does it 'appear' that wick?

Elegran Thu 29-Aug-19 15:52:19

Sorry my analogy didn't come up to scratch, Gilly It was the best I could come up with at the time - and on a par with my mother's retort when I said I had done some thing 'because Mary did it' She'd have answered 'If Mary put her hand in the fire, would you put yours in too?'

Elegran Thu 29-Aug-19 15:55:14

This thread is only one of many that are full of opinions of all kinds, and that is just on one forum on one website. I don't think there is one person in the country who doesn't have at least one opinion on the subject. Some have or had several different ones.

Urmstongran Thu 29-Aug-19 15:56:33

Another Remainer luvvie, children’s author Philip Pullman hinted Boris Johnson should be 'hanged' over proroguing parliament.

The Author, 72, was then slammed on social media for 'inciting violence'

He has since deleted tweet and said he 'temporarily lost his judgement'.

Silly man.

Elegran Thu 29-Aug-19 15:57:06

Actually, I almost used capital punishment as my analogy, but decided on the bomb instead. More dramatic!

SirChenjin Thu 29-Aug-19 16:01:42

In the last survey carried out more than half of Leavers want hanging brought back Urm - perhaps Pullman is simply exhibiting the kind of democracy they understand.

gillybob Thu 29-Aug-19 16:02:36

grin Elegran

gillybob Thu 29-Aug-19 16:10:56

Here's one for you SirChenjin

Brexit is like a premier league team asking to be relegated.

or

Its like trying to take the eggs out of an omelette

or

Brexit is like trying to half a horse. you can have either the head or the arse but ultimately its going to bleed to death.

I honestly can't claim any of these as my own btw.

or my particular favourite for now....

Brexit is like half the country rang the bell on the bus by accident and now feel that they have to get off even though it not their stop. grin

SirChenjin Thu 29-Aug-19 16:21:11

Sounds about right gilly

Or like being told you need a new shiny car by the salesman because you're paying too much for the one you have - but not knowing what/make/model/size/price the new one is and voting for it anyway!

Or being told you can move to a bigger and better house, but you've no idea where the house is, whether you'll be able to commute to it, or if your family will fit in it or if you can afford the repayments - but moving anyway, because it's better!

Something like that?

Elegran Thu 29-Aug-19 16:22:52

"Brexit is like half the country rang the bell on the bus by accident and now feel that they have to get off even though it not their stop. " and when the bus moves off, all the passengers will be left at the side of the road, waiting for the next one to come along. There is no reliable timetable, as it hasn't been printed yet, and they don't even know what number the bus will be until the bus company makes up its mind and prints it on the front. The fares have not yet been announced, but will certainly be a great deal more than those on the original bus, and there won't be any free wi-fi, or heating. The seats could be those wooden ones we used to get in the fifties.

SirChenjin Thu 29-Aug-19 16:26:20

Oh stop worrying Elegran - Boris has said one will be along soon so it must be true. You'll recognise the bus when you see it - it will have £350 million written on the side of it.

gillybob Thu 29-Aug-19 16:32:22

You'll recognise the bus when you see it - it will have £350 million written on the side of it

Boom Boom grin

varian Thu 29-Aug-19 16:47:24

The bus has arrived

sazz1 Thu 29-Aug-19 16:51:05

Sorry but the vote to leave the EU was made and should be respected. That is what a democracy does. U can't just say oh have another vote incase some have changed their mind or until we vote to stay in. The vote should stand and we should have left 2yrs ago.

Labaik Thu 29-Aug-19 16:52:19

I still want a leavers opinion on the Irish problem. The only 'opinion' I seem to get is 'let's just get on with it which isn't really an opinion just a meaningless statement...

mostlyharmless Thu 29-Aug-19 17:23:26

The Defence Secretary (Ben Wallace) has just been caught on camera saying the reason for suspending Parliament was that Johnson hasn’t got enough MPs to pass the Withdrawal Agreement. That means Rees-Mogg lied to the Queen at Balmoral yesterday.
That must be a serious offence. Treason perhaps???
