Chinese buying up all the baby milk !

I saw it with my own eyes yesterday as DD and I were in Boots (Newcastle) looking for baby milk and baby juice. My Dd has told me in the past that she has struggled to find milk in town and that the shelves are often bare and she often has to try quite a few different shops before finding any.

Yesterday I questioned an assistant and she told me “oh don’t get me started, I could stock the shelves to the top right now (if we had any) and the Chinese would come in and buy it all. We have had to limit the milk to 10 boxes per person but they come in 6 and 8 at a time and take the maximum amount per person , meaning that people like your daughter cannot even get one box.....ditto the special baby juices”

Apparently they send it all back to China . There is a large Chinese population in Newcastle and this is becoming common place in most of the shops that stock baby products. I had to hear it with my own ears and see it to believe it ! shock

Thankfully Evie is only having one bed time bottle a day now which is just as well. Not sure they can do about it ? Making the limits per person 2 or 3 instead of 10 might be a good start though.

Well, Boots have never really been known to be serving the community. Any profit they can lay their hands on.

gillybob Sat 31-Aug-19 14:16:16

If there’s not s problem why are they already limiting purchases to 10 per person? Because they recognise there’s a bloody problem that’s why !

Gilly I did read your post, but my comment included Boots
Allowing each customer a limit ( I just didn’t add that bit.)
The manager is in a quandary, he cannot refuse to sell to Chinese customers, and if course they could ( and perhaps do) go into the store several times a day.
Limiting each customer to 5 and holding a large stock of formula ( in the back) is one way, other than that, to make sure that local mothers have enough, the tills which are computerised anyway, could be made to show if a person has purchased it that same day.
Other than that, if Boots won’t do anything about it, do the local Chinese people buy it up in Tesco, Sainsbury and other outlets too?

Oh come on gillybob Tyneside is a hugearea with hundreds of shops surely they haven't all sold out- no one is going to starve!

GagaJo Sat 31-Aug-19 14:17:39

As I said gillybob SIX places within a 1/2 mile radius in Newcastle centre to buy milk, Hardly starvation. Wee bit of hyperbole going on there luv.

lemongrove Sat 31-Aug-19 14:18:29

It seems that all the managers of stores in the region need to
Do more to stop this problem.Have you emailed them, and ask your DD and all her friends to do the same?

GagaJo Sat 31-Aug-19 14:18:53

Thank you trisher voice of reason.

We live in the area. NEVER not been able to buy formula here.

Gonegirl Sat 31-Aug-19 14:20:24

God! I bet gillybob wishes she'd never started this casual thread now!

Who knew anyone would take it this heavy? confused

GagaJo Sat 31-Aug-19 14:21:53

Or Boots could (radical idea I know) massively increase their stock. City centre main Boots is HUGE and there are many empty units in that shopping centre.

Just imagine all the extra profit they could make.

lemongrove Sat 31-Aug-19 14:22:55

Thinking it through, it’s fine if you have a car and can whizz off to another store, but what about those Mum’s who don’t
(My DD doesn’t.) If they are used to buying milk in town, and can’t get any regularly, I can see there would be a problem.

GagaJo Sat 31-Aug-19 14:24:03

Because Gonegirl it's a racist idea.

Don't let the Chinese buy up all the baby milk.

1) They're not.
2) Shop elsewhere
3) Racist
4) Not illegal

To be honest, I'm surprised GNHQ haven't swooped in by now.

lemongrove Sat 31-Aug-19 14:25:05

It’s not a radical idea GagaJo I suggested that upthread.☺️

GagaJo Sat 31-Aug-19 14:25:09

It's fine lemongrove there are loads of grocery places in Newcastle city centre. This is a non issue.

gillybob Sat 31-Aug-19 14:26:43

I’m glad I started this thread. It’s really showing some people up for what they really are !

And for the record some Morrison’s have reported the same problems !

It’s great if you don’t work and have all the time in the world to go to every supermarket isn’t it? Especially when you don’t drive either .

gillybob Sat 31-Aug-19 14:27:32

Loads of grocery places in the city centre ? That stock baby milk Really ? Can you name them all please cos I can only think of 2 .

GagaJo Sat 31-Aug-19 14:27:33

gillybob, M&S is NEXT to Boots in Newcastle. Jeez

Gonegirl Sat 31-Aug-19 14:27:36

OP God! You know it all don't you Gagajo. Or think you do. hmm

Of course it's not racist. How could you complain about the Chinese buy ng up all the stock without mentioning the Chinese? It could be men from Mars, for all the difference it makes.

GagaJo Sat 31-Aug-19 14:28:53

Boots X 2
Sainsbury's (Monument metro)
Tesco (behind Grainger market)
M&S
Possibly Fenwicks food dept but can't swear to that one

GagaJo Sat 31-Aug-19 14:29:30

Gonegirl if you don't get that...

Gonegirl Sat 31-Aug-19 14:29:31

And don't take the Lord's name in vain. I will be horribly offended. I might ask for it to be deleted.

Eh! I've just had a thought. Perhaps she wants to use her Boots Reward card. Not everyone is rolling in money. Some people have to watch the pennies.

trisher Sat 31-Aug-19 14:34:28

Please please please can we stop blaming the Chinese. There are over 10,000 students from the far East living in the centre of Newcastle and I doubt if the lady in Boots can tell a Chinese person from a Korean or someone from Singapore or Hong Kong. And some of the students have babies and they have just returned to Uni so could be stocking up.
lemon you don't need a car in Newcastle we have an excellent transport system. I live 15 mins frrom the city centre and I don't drive.

GagaJo Sat 31-Aug-19 14:35:40

LOL Gonegirl

Let me guess trisher. Jesmond.

Gonegirl Sat 31-Aug-19 14:35:53

My post of 13:59:44 should of course have read, "This has got nothing to do with racism. Just to make it clear.
