How brainless to sing the red flag.....

.......in parliament!!

Do they not realise that this is exactly what will put people off voting labour? That song alone raises the fear that a new Tory government will emerge from an election. I despair.

We need some reasoned middle ground debate, and a few politicians with half a brain - I have given up hoping for integrity too.

Luckygirl is right.

Watched on tv by millions, they looked like a left wing sit -in
Demo having fun at at a Uni , waving placards and singing the Red Flag.

The prissy commentators wouldn't know. They would make very similar comments about beige cardigans. You can hear them now "goodness, Flo, she wore beige in Harrods". I'm beginning to think GNHQ makes them up, although I notice a couple of other human-beings have sneaked in with you Grandad.

Labaik Tue 10-Sept-19 16:57:40

The placards said 'Silenced'. I can't see anything wrong with that.

Doodledog Tue 10-Sept-19 17:00:23

Very devious and inflammatory editing to include only the 'Red Flag' in the news bulletins!

Absolutely. And it can't have been accidental.

I think the Welsh sang a hymn Calon Lan.
Well known in chapels and rugby clubs. Signifies nothing really except solidarity .

Anniebach Tue 10-Sept-19 17:11:46

Calon Lan is a Welsh Hymn , a request to God for a pure heart

Have just seen the BBC News and I wouldn't have known other songs had been sung if I had not read it on here. Not good!

redorist Tue 10-Sept-19 17:19:42

Very well said Beckett ....I totally agree

GracesGranMK3 Tue 10-Sept-19 17:54:21

Perhaps it would have been better if they all chose to sing the National Anthem

Sadly Beckett, I think the same people would still have complained.

SirChenjin Tue 10-Sept-19 17:57:43

Hmm - a few songs versus the appalling foot stomping, posturing scenes from a petulant cabinet as they seek to undermine parliamentary democracy. Decisions, decisions..

mcem Tue 10-Sept-19 17:58:50

A rousing chorus of "Ode to Joy"?

Lessismore Tue 10-Sept-19 18:12:47

Do you support the Labour party Annie?

Anniebach Tue 10-Sept-19 18:14:11

Listening to the BBC news, the two songs and the hymn was
played

Luckygirl Tue 10-Sept-19 18:16:09

We could do with a few pure hearts at the heart of politics annie - bring it on!

Anniebach Tue 10-Sept-19 18:38:53

Lessismore I left the Labour Party this year after over 50
years a member and activist.

I cannot support the Corbyn-momentum party so I don’t support any party now.

Lessismore Tue 10-Sept-19 18:40:49

OK Annie, thanks.

Doodledog Tue 10-Sept-19 18:40:51

A rousing chorus of "Ode to Joy"? grin

Or Tomorrow Belongs To Me?

Fennel Tue 10-Sept-19 18:57:20

I used to sing the Red Flag. I think it's a symbol of bonding now , rather than an ode to communism.

Dyffryn Tue 10-Sept-19 19:16:53

I don’t blame them singing after yesterday’s debacle. Singing songs like that is about camaraderie. I went to two Stop the Coup protests recently attended by all political parties. At the end of both the Welsh national anthem was sang. It was brilliant even though many were not Welsh no one complained and it made everyone feel good. I think what they did in Parliament was brilliant.

Rosiebee Tue 10-Sept-19 19:21:12

My favourite Welsh hymn and they sang it in tune and even with a touch of harmony. dragon

Anniebach Tue 10-Sept-19 20:31:17

Yes Rosiebee a lovely hymn ,

BradfordLass72 Tue 10-Sept-19 20:34:48

Keir Hardy would be proud of them. It's called loyalty, something very rare these days.

mcem Tue 10-Sept-19 20:40:53

doodle The first time I remember hearing 'Tomorrow belongs to me' it was in Sound of Music. I was very young and thought it was lovely!!!
Always thought it was sad that Wagner had such bad press too. Wish we could separate some music from its associations!

RubyLou Tue 10-Sept-19 20:41:31

Luckygirl, I thought exactly the same thing.

I actually want a Labour government but I admit I am the sort of voter the Labour party doesn't seem to want these days, I am a Centrist.

But to be elected Labour will need to appeal to Centrists like me and singing a communist anthem won't increase the appeal. Corbyn needs to look measured, statesmanlike and able to forge links and alliances in contrast to boorish Johnson. Reverting to 'revolutionary' anthems scares people like me.

Doodledog Tue 10-Sept-19 20:42:36

Seriously, can anyone tell me what is 'brainless' or in any way offensive about the words of this song?

The people's flag is deepest red
It shrouded oft our martyred dead
And ere their limbs grew stiff and cold
Their hearts' blood dyed in every fold

Then raise the scarlet standard high
Beneath its folds we'll live and die
Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer
We'll keep the red flag flying here

It waved above our infant might
When all ahead seemed dark as night
It witnessed many a deed and vow
We mustn't change it's color now

Raise the scarlet standard high
Beneath its folds we'll live and die
Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer
We'll keep the red flag flying here

It well recalls the triumphs past
It gives the hope of peace at last
The banner bright, the symbol plain
Of human right and human gain

Raise the scarlet standard high
Beneath its…
