Corbyn vows - ‘to put people before privilege’

How low can anyone sink

Doodledog Thu 19-Sep-19 21:03:35

I think that this is an admirable aim. Would you prefer to put privilege before people?

Day6 Thu 19-Sep-19 21:04:27

Yes, says the millionaire politican......

What a hollow statement, really. An opportunist statement on the back of the Guardian Cameron debacle, maybe? hmm

How does he intend to measure 'privilege' anyway? I am a person, more privileged than some, less privileged than many. Does he intend to work only for the under-privileged then? Who qualifies? That doesn't work either.

He ought to have followed in Mother Theresa's footsteps in that case as he is sounding like a phoney saint. Is he likely to give up his MP perks? Nope.

Anniebach Thu 19-Sep-19 21:06:20

Cameron - privileged pain !

paddyann Thu 19-Sep-19 23:44:19

The Scottish government currently spends around £100 MILLION of our budget on mitigating Tory policy ,things like the bedroom tax .Maybe Corbyn is talking about those people who are hurting most with austerity ,like the carers and the low paid ,the people who rely on foodbanks the children who go to school hungry .Thats what socialism IS .There would be something far wrong with him as a leader of Labour if he thought giving High rate tax payers cuts instead of helping these people in need. Therefore he is putting PEOPLE before Privilege .Sounds right to me.Its what MY government is doing every day .

I don’t understand what the problem is, Anniebach. Like Doodlebug, I think this is an admirable sentiment. And I don’t think only poor people are allowed to have principles.

Barmeyoldbat Fri 20-Sep-19 00:29:34

Well said Paddyannn and hopefully more social housing. and rent control.

MaizieD Fri 20-Sep-19 09:27:40

No, I can't see any problem with that. Struggling to see why Annie bothered to post it.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 20-Sep-19 09:31:23

Expect another new thread soon??

Anniebach Fri 20-Sep-19 09:56:18

What privileges, which people ?

absthame Sat 21-Sep-19 00:02:56

Well it's difficult to sink lower than Corbyn but it seems that some in the LP can especially the Lansman cult, unless they are acting on the behest of Corbyn.

Fiachna50 Sat 21-Sep-19 00:07:29

Oh yeah the Scottish Govt ate working wonders, two brand new hospitals that are so bad, there are constant problems with one and the other is costing us a million quid a week. Yeah, they are doing really well. As for Mr Corbyn, sorry not leader material.

suziewoozie Sat 21-Sep-19 07:28:13

Whenever an idea is reduced to a slogan , it can make it difficult to understand what is actually meant. I couldn’t make head nor tail of ‘people before privilege’ so thought I would go to the horses mouth so to speak. Here’s what it means - you may or may not agree with it but I think it was daft to start discussing 3 words with no sense of context.

He would have to get off test fence first. He is good at procastrination.

Hetty58 Sat 21-Sep-19 07:53:10

Thanks for the link suziewoozie. That puts it into context. Anyone can make an isolated quote sound daft.

suziewoozie Sat 21-Sep-19 07:56:44

Hetty yes absolutely. It’s not a very useful way to try and have a discussion is it? Bit like the comment about JC being a millionaire without explaining how the Spears magazine article came to that conclusion.

Anniebach Sat 21-Sep-19 08:22:22

It was Corbyn’s quote

Nandalot Sat 21-Sep-19 08:30:19

Thank you for the link to the article, Suziewoozie. Nothing to disagree with in it.

Oopsminty Sat 21-Sep-19 08:38:26

We would be in a bit of a mess without these 'privileged' souls. Some of whom have worked extremely hard.

Is it not correct that the highest earning 1% in the UK pay approx 28% of all income tax?

Quite a tidy sum.

suziewoozie Sat 21-Sep-19 11:40:48

annie I’m not saying he didn’t say it it - I’m saying posting those three words without context is really not helpful. That’s all.

Anniebach Sat 21-Sep-19 11:52:26

*suziewoozie, I posted Corbyn’s three words.

suziewoozie Sat 21-Sep-19 11:56:22

Yes annie I know you did. With no context - how did you expect people to discuss what they meant? On their own they are meaningless - like other 3 word slogans - eg Brexit means Brexit ;Education, Education, Education for starters.

Eloethan Sat 21-Sep-19 11:58:31

What exactly do you object to anniebach that makes you comment "how low can anyone sink"?

Corbyn also said:

"The dramatic scale of wealth inequality in our country is a sign of a sick economy. The system is broken when it inflates the wealth of the richest, while failing to invest in our future.

“This inequality doesn’t just undermine our future prosperity, it’s linked to all sorts of social problems, including violent crime, worse health outcomes and reduced access to education. And we know that concentrations of wealth generate unaccountable power, corrupting our politics in the process.”

I think Corbyn's comments are entirely appropriate when considering Johnson's recently stated objectives:

To introduce tax cuts for those on the higher rate of income tax and increase the threshold for national insurance contributions.

Analysis suggests this would benefit the richest 20% of families at least seven times more than the poorest 20%, and push 50,000 families below the poverty line.

Anniebach Sat 21-Sep-19 11:59:02

so Corbyn was wrong ?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 21-Sep-19 12:02:11

annie read the economic and tax policies being put out by Labour and then argue which ones are wrong.
