Labour Party Conference - chaos reigns.

Chaos - after two days. It's not going well.

Labour has had

an MP suspension mooted
the senior adviser to Corbyn quitting,
revelations the membership want to sack the queen
and call a general strike.

and all while 15 points behind the Tories.

It's all a bit reminiscent of militant Labour, isn't?

Momentum, the controlling force, is looking to replace Corbyn with another hard left Trot/Marxist leader.

What on earth has happened to Labour? shock

I suspect though that they appreciate the EU grants that they have received

And they are all bright enough to know we give Brussels far more than we get back, and that the EU ear-marking the way in which the money we receive back is used, means, to all intents and purposes, even our spending is controlled by Brussels.

humptydumpty Mon 23-Sept-19 14:55:18

Anyone would think they are an evil dictatorship! what about all those democratically-elected MEPs including from UK, or is there some DarkForce behind these malevolent decisions?

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 14:56:20

Hmm! This is going to be interesting.

Unison is going to oppose the NEC's wait and see Brexit position, then support motion 13, and abstain on motion 14 - in other words, a huge union is breaking with Corbyn's position on Brexit today and wants to push the party to back Remain immediately

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 14:57:52

Ah, but the money doesn't come from the deprived regions, which the EU supports. There is no guarantee that the government would use any money saved (if there is any) on those regions.

growstuff Mon 23-Sept-19 14:59:05

Good job the EU controls spending because the distribution of the money is much fairer than the way the government would spend it.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 23-Sept-19 15:08:15

Imagine the frenzy if Corbyn was alleged to have siphoned public money to a friend and intervened to make sure she went on trade missions for which she didn’t meet the criteria.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 23-Sept-19 15:29:41

Listening to the impassioned Brexit speeches, a real debate taking place. Excellent!

Something you will never see at the Tory conference as the sheep sit on their bottoms baaing in approval at policies they have no say in.

Labaik Mon 23-Sept-19 18:55:59

I only caught an hour of today's conference but it looked totally shambolic...

Whitewavemark2 Quote [ Listening to the impassioned Brexit speeches, a real debate taking place. Excellent!] End Quote.

I had to go into the office from mid-morning onwards so missed the debate, but I understand that real passion was demonstrated by both sides on the podium and from the conference floor.

The above is what such party conferences should and must be about. In that, the executive and the grassroots members in equality at the podium aiming for the support of all those delegated to represent the membership at the conference, wonderfull politics.

I have just seen a recording of the John McDonald tribute to Jeremy Corbyn in regard to his restraint in the face of the unprecedented personal attacks on him by Britains extream right-wing press and media.

It was wonderfull to see the reaction and overwhelming support demonstrated from all in attendance at the conference for Jeremy Corbyn when that tribute was paid to him.

Great stuff and what for me the British Labour movement is all about. Wish it was me at Brighton this year attending the fringe meetings for our company, but that could not be, unfortunately.

Urmstongran Mon 23-Sept-19 20:29:29

I think the Tory Cabinet knew about the plan to prorogue. The actual timing may have surprised a few. Who knows?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 23-Sept-19 20:31:27

labaik it is always like that

GracesGranMK3 Mon 23-Sept-19 20:35:17

I didn't see chaos I saw democracy, swiftly followed by very silly journalists belittling their own intelligence by complaining perfectly simply propositions were "too difficult to understand".

Anniebach Mon 23-Sept-19 22:00:46

Been to many conferences, watching and listening to today’s
definitely gone rather rough and rowdy

Anniebach Quote [Been to many conferences, watching and listening to today’s
definitely gone rather rough and rowdy] End Quote.

Anniebach, the Labour movement Delegate Conference is once again an event of true passion and debate. Gone are the days of the executive parading onto the stage to loud drums and music in the liking of Greek Gods. They then made bland speeches following which the media would judge their performance by the length of the expected standing ovation.

All rank and file members who wished to speak for or against any motion or resolution would have to submit their proposed address to the conference standing orders committee a day prior to the agenda resolution or motion being called, and if it was radically against any executive policy then that grassroots member would not be called to the podium.

Under the present leadership of Corbyn and others, the above has been brought to an end, and once again we see the reunification of the parliamentary Labour Party into the broader (affiliated) Labour movement in the country.

So, now the executive share the podium at conference in equal status to those from district and Constituency Labour Parties along with trade union activists and their executive leadership.

The above brings real heartfelt debate and argument to the conference floor, and that is the way it should be if the Labour conference is to play any real meaning in bringing and maintaining true democracy within the Labour movement.

So, real debate carried out within a genuine conference.

granddad43 yes the executive where certainly present , you adored Jennie even changed the result of a vote. Embarrassing for the chair and causing much anger .

It was chaos.

Grany Tue 24-Sept-19 09:00:25

Well Said Granddad1943
Real debate within a genuine conference

Anniebach Tue 24-Sept-19 09:03:10

Refusing card vote and Jennie Formby deciding the result of the vote ?

Grandad1943 Tue 24-Sept-19 09:10:20

08:36Anniebach, yes there was a mistake made between the chair and vice-chairpersons, but from the angle of the media cameras it was obvious that the vote held a large clear majority against the motion.

I believe that having the delegates needing to vote against the motion caused the confusion on the platform and it was Jennie Formby that called it wrong in the chairperson's ear.

However, Jennie Formby is still in the recovery stage from Breast Cancer. Therefore, I feel the vast majority at the conference soon forgave her for that mistake as it was being stated only a week back that she would not be in attendance at the conference.

We all make mistakes Anniebach, and in her case yesterday, they are very forgivable.

Anniebach Tue 24-Sept-19 09:14:00

A mistake in such an important vote is not forgivable

GracesGranMK3 Tue 24-Sept-19 09:51:36

I know little about LP conferences but didn't the two people on the stage both agree on which group had largest vote but one just got the attribution wrong?

It seems to me we now have a party who want to force leave on the country, one who want to force remain and one who want a vote between a plausible leave and remain. It's only difficult to understand if you want it to be. Personally I am getting fed up with wondering just how far below 100 is it IQ of those who say either they do not understand or the public will not understand.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Sept-19 09:54:59

gg3

That is exactly as I saw it. It was obvious which way the vote went.

Anniebach Tue 24-Sept-19 09:55:16

Between leave and remain = sitting on the fence

gillybob Tue 24-Sept-19 10:00:51
