I have to agree with notreallyagran.. I said the same to a very good friend on Facebook when she was complaining about XR and she posted to keep recycling. I posted “women wouldn’t have the vote if the suffragettes hadn’t protested the way they did.”
I believe we have gone beyond saving the planet. In Australia since around the year 2000, each summer has been hotter and every year records are being broken. A few years ago where I live the highest temperature was 46C last summer it was 49C. I had never in my life experienced a 49C temperature and every summer we experience most days over 40C, that’s 104F. I can remember a ten day heat wave in 1982 because it didn’t happen very often.
Last summer fruit grown in this food growing region, was rotting from the inside from the intense heat. Crops, fruit and vegetables are a major livelihood of many people in this area. It’s often called the food bowl of Australia, 70% of Australia’s table grapes are grown here. Nectarines and peaches are imported overseas. People won’t be able to feed their families and pay their bills. People won’t find fruit and vegetables and other foods in their supermarkets, here and overseas.
People who live in cooler climates probably don’t notice as much as those living on the land. I am sure the UK politicians have not noticed much change in the climate yet. Maybe a few more hotter days, a few more floods and some severe storms. Nothing that is making any difference to their lives. A lot of Australian politicians, mostly those on the right don’t believe in climate change yet people still vote them in government.
I’m not sure if stopping trains and causing civil disobedience will work with the average person who isn’t making the big decisions. Governments are apathetic and are only concerned about getting elected. Instead I would like to see our politicians targeted. Their lives should be disrupted, organised protests so they can’t get into work. Petitions and media articles on how they vote on climate issues so everyone can see their lack of action. No votes for them if they are not doing everything they can to stop carbon emissions rising. It’s gone beyond climate change denial, it’s absolute neglect and stupidity by decisions of those in government..
When our generation and our DC’s generation are asked by the younger generations what we did to stop the climate rising. What will you tell them?
