Boris Johnson and his lies
(523 Posts)The independent think tank UK in a Changing Europe has today found that Johnson's deal would reduce GDP per capita by between 2.3% and 7% over the next decade. This compares with May's deal where the estimate was between 1.9% and 5.5%. They also suggest that a deal would hit public finances by £16bn and £49bn.
Today in parliament Johnson promised that high standards on workers rights an environmental protections will be maintained.
The political declaration can enter UK law but it is only a statement of intent and he can therefore promise the ERG that, if he wins the next election, he will set aside the political declaration and pivot towards deregulation and a sweetheart deal with Trump. The purpose of the ERG is to deregulate at home in order to strike trade deals with the US and emerging markets.
Would someone please explain why he should now be trusted when he has lied throughout the whole of his career. After all, leopards don't change their spots. It would take too long to list all his lies, but here's some, as a reminder:
1. When suspended from the cable car across the Thames, the mechanism apparently failed. Of course, it was deliberately stopped and he claimed it failed for a good photo opportunity.
2. In his manifesto for the London Mayor election he promised that he would ensure that there would be manned ticket offices at every train station. he then agreed to widespread closures in order to fund 24 hour tube trains
3. Also in his manifesto he promised to eradicate rough sleeping - it doubled during his tenure
4. He lied about the reason for proroguing parliament
5. He repeated his lie about the EU regulating the shape of bananas
6. He lied about there being no press when he was at GOS Hospital
Now for the money wasted whilst mayor on vanity projects:
1. Feasibility study into the Garden Bridge - £52 million
2. Cable car £24 million
3. Boris bikes £225 million (original idea Ken Livingstone but BJ implemented it)
4. Water cannon £323,000 - not allowed under UK law, unsold and now scrapped
5. Estuary airport feasibility study £5.2 million
6. Olympic stadium conversion to football pitch for West Ham - £305 million. The club was supposed to contribute £153 million but in the end it only paid £15 million and now pays annual rent of £2.5 million.
7. Routemaster hybrid buses £321.6 million - superseded by the introduction of electric buses. It's USP is now defunct because the doors at the rear "hop on hop off" platforms are closed in moving traffic (and that includes at walking pace)
A few of these projects had small amounts of sponsorship money but most of the costs were funded by the tax payer
I can't believe that ITV have just said a poll showed that Johnson had won the debate. I'm no fan of Corbyn but he wiped the floor with Johnson and I was very impressed. Someone has also said that Johnson legged it as soon as the debate ended whereas Corbyn stayed behind and chatted to people [ I can't verify that; it was just a comment on facebook but I'd be surprised if it wasn't true...].
Indeed - nonsense.
I've just heard Dominic Raab on the radio defending the 'factcheck' issue. As usual he was repeating the tory mantras and spoke at breakneck speed. He rarely breathes when he answers questions and at the end of his delivery he has basically said nothing new.
The conservative party has always had a well funded dirty tricks department, but this impersonation of a neutral factchecker is a new low.
Lie after lie after lie.
We need to be very alarmed over the NHS

Seriously - who fact-checks from a Twitter account?
If you want to really check facts you have to be prepared to put in the time to go back to source materials and get information from a varitey of sources so as to ensure there is no bias.
If you are relying on getting your "facts" off Twitter, expect to be bamboozled.
Emily Maitliss challenged Beverley today on the 'Fact Check' issue - and would not accept his reply and deflect tactics.
Well done.
ug who behaves as CCHQ did last night? People are disgusted.

time for all journalists to refuse any replies to questions, which do not directly answer said question. All sides...
Politicians learn pre-prepared propaganda and attacks on other politicians, almost by heart. These should be ignored and the journalist cutting off the above, and repeating the question twice. No reply to the question - cut off - simples.
If no-one fact checks on Twitter why go to the bother of changing the account name ? Why not change it to Clickhereformorelies
Could it be that actually, many people use social media for their news? The Tories do protest too much - the rest of us pull the other leg to hear the bells.
I don't suppose the fake fact checker checked any of Johnson's 'facts'?
Has anyone seen Emily Matliss' interview with James Cleverly?
She said:
Start
"The Conservative press office was pretending to be a fact-checking service, renaming itself with a credibility tick. You are misleading the public, you were trying to coach your propaganda as hardened fact."
"You were misleading the public. Why would you have to change it to something that says fact check if people believed you?
"You dressed up party lines as a fact check service. That's dystopian."
End

And now Raab trying to excuse the inexcusable - and no regrets either. If no-one 'gives a toss' as he says, why to they put so much effort and twistery in deception?
<iframe width="400" height="500" frameborder="0" src="https://www.bbc.com/news/av/embed/p07vj7p4/50486534"></iframe>
They’re banking on theirs followers being sufficiently stupid, gullible or blinkered to believe their claims that it was just a bit of fun (or whatever they would have us believe it was).
I'm sure Boris Johnson and Trump were seperated at birth
Same same
Both egotistical liars in my opinion
What is however the most disconcerting, the most upsetting and certainly the most dangerous - is that both for Trump and Johnson- the more they are proven to be liars, cheats, fraudsters of the worst kind - the more their supposters worship them blindly and are prepared to excuse the absolutely inenxcusable.
Same with Hitler, Mussolini, Franco ...
Urmstongran Are you suggesting that anybody who believes Tory lies is stupid?
Why do you think CCHQ did it, if nobody used or believed it?
As Raab said .. no harm done as 'nobody gives a toss' about Twitter and social media
- which is of course why they are making such a huge and expensive effort to put fake news on Twitter and social media
''Are you suggesting that anybody who believes Tory lies is stupid? '' of course- this is exactly what she is saying- and Raab too.
I come from a staunch Tory enclave. The majority of my dearest friends are Tory. (We dont talk politics). Most of them have shared a lot of unfounded lies and half truths about Corbyn. I often post properly fact checked replies underneath. Although most would never vote for Corbyn because of this media campaign, I have noticed that many are now saying they won't vote for any of them as they are all liars. Less votes for the Tories. I'm happy!
Anyone who believes that people don't get their news from social media should read this www.ofcom.org.uk/about-ofcom/latest/features-and-news/half-of-people-get-news-from-social-media
Tory HQ knew exactly what they were doing and the very least they should have done is own their behaviour.
Yes, SirChenjin, they knew exactly what they were doing but they never admit any wrongdoing, do they?
I think this whole, sad Brexit saga demonstrates that emotion trumps reason. Many people believe lies if those lies feed an emotional need.
Strangely enough I've been saying on social media for quite a while [and people have been agreeing with me] that debates like this should be immediately fact checked. D'you think the Conservative party have been reading those threads? Social media might be a good way to spread fake news but they must be running scared of genuine fact check organisations. People that don't use facebook or twitter have no idea how influential those things are.
There is a petition about this deceit but I don't know how to do a link.....
Just copy the link and paste it into your message, Labaik. Gnet does the rest. It's really simple.
I'd sign the petition...
