Boris Johnson and his lies

The independent think tank UK in a Changing Europe has today found that Johnson's deal would reduce GDP per capita by between 2.3% and 7% over the next decade. This compares with May's deal where the estimate was between 1.9% and 5.5%. They also suggest that a deal would hit public finances by £16bn and £49bn.

Today in parliament Johnson promised that high standards on workers rights an environmental protections will be maintained.

The political declaration can enter UK law but it is only a statement of intent and he can therefore promise the ERG that, if he wins the next election, he will set aside the political declaration and pivot towards deregulation and a sweetheart deal with Trump. The purpose of the ERG is to deregulate at home in order to strike trade deals with the US and emerging markets.

Would someone please explain why he should now be trusted when he has lied throughout the whole of his career. After all, leopards don't change their spots. It would take too long to list all his lies, but here's some, as a reminder:

1. When suspended from the cable car across the Thames, the mechanism apparently failed. Of course, it was deliberately stopped and he claimed it failed for a good photo opportunity.

2. In his manifesto for the London Mayor election he promised that he would ensure that there would be manned ticket offices at every train station. he then agreed to widespread closures in order to fund 24 hour tube trains

3. Also in his manifesto he promised to eradicate rough sleeping - it doubled during his tenure

4. He lied about the reason for proroguing parliament

5. He repeated his lie about the EU regulating the shape of bananas

6. He lied about there being no press when he was at GOS Hospital

Now for the money wasted whilst mayor on vanity projects:

1. Feasibility study into the Garden Bridge - £52 million

2. Cable car £24 million

3. Boris bikes £225 million (original idea Ken Livingstone but BJ implemented it)

4. Water cannon £323,000 - not allowed under UK law, unsold and now scrapped

5. Estuary airport feasibility study £5.2 million

6. Olympic stadium conversion to football pitch for West Ham - £305 million. The club was supposed to contribute £153 million but in the end it only paid £15 million and now pays annual rent of £2.5 million.

7. Routemaster hybrid buses £321.6 million - superseded by the introduction of electric buses. It's USP is now defunct because the doors at the rear "hop on hop off" platforms are closed in moving traffic (and that includes at walking pace)

A few of these projects had small amounts of sponsorship money but most of the costs were funded by the tax payer

Apparently people don’t get on in life because they have low IQs - according to BJ grin www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/boris-johnson-fails-to-give-any-correct-answers-when-ambushed-with-iq-test-live-on-air-8980365.html%3famp

Listen everyone - at least I do pop on these political threads to stop you lot from posting in an echo chamber!

Boris will win.

You are annoyed because deep down, you know it and understandably it makes you cross.

SirChenjin Thu 21-Nov-19 20:54:17

grin

You keep telling yourself that Urm - it gives the rest of us something to laugh at!

Hetty58 Thu 21-Nov-19 20:56:05

I really don't think he will!

grapefruitpip Thu 21-Nov-19 20:57:24

What do you like/admire about the man?

jura2 Thu 21-Nov-19 20:57:38

And Boris is frit- cancels TWO debates today- wow.

''Boris Johnson – in spite of the shameless spin of the Establishment media – clearly knows that Jeremy Corbyn won Tuesday’s first leaders’ debate by a country mile.

So eager to avoid another drubbing is the Tory leader that he has chickened out of a planned follow-up debate on Channel 4. He does not appear to have given an official reason.

But it’s not only Labour’s leader who has Johnson running scared. Johnson has also refused to debate his Labour opponent Ali Milani at the planned hustings in the battle for the Uxbridge and South Ruislip seat Johnson needs to retain to stay in Parliament, as Milani announced this evening:''

jura2 Thu 21-Nov-19 20:59:00

But yes Urmstongran, very brave of you - left all on your own, defending the indefensible - tought, that.

Amagran Thu 21-Nov-19 21:00:06

Yes, Urmstongran, I confess that you are absolutely right. I am annoyed that BJ will win. But I am not annoyed deep down - I am annoyed right here on the surface. I am absolutely fuming, seething and simmering, as is any decent person who thinks that day by day he sinks lower and lower with his desperate and at times illegal tactics to deceive voters and retain the power that he so craves. He even manages to make Farage look relatively wholesome, and that's saying something.

You and I may think that he will win, but he is clearly rattled. Why else would he set up a false website purporting to represent the official Labour party website and pay for Google to send anyone searching for Labour to the false site?

Urmstongran Thu 21-Nov-19 21:02:25

You see, Labour are just not understanding how their policy on Brexit will alienate Leavers, and they really need Leaver votes.

Corbyn made it abundantly clear that they plan to renegotiate the deal with the EU, and then offer a ‘deal or remain’ referendum to the country.

But, because they won’t commit to Leave or Remain (because they also need Remain votes), nervous Leavers can’t be sure that the deal that they will negotiate will be any good, or whether they will deliberately sabotage the deal so they the Remain vote wins in the referendum.

I understand why Labour won’t commit, but because the Tories are clear that they are a Leave party, they’re the only credible party for Leavers to vote for.

Boris knows this!

grapefruitpip Thu 21-Nov-19 21:05:53

What do you hope will come about personally and for the country with Boris landslide?

Urmstongran Thu 21-Nov-19 21:08:50

Well we will Brexit gfp that’s for sure.

Actually, To be fair, I miss the days when it seemed rude to ask someone who they were voting for...
?

GracesGranMK3 Thu 21-Nov-19 21:10:51

Articulated! Seriously, who do you usually mix with UG.

Urmstongran Thu 21-Nov-19 21:16:14

Articulated!
Sorry GGMK3 you’ve lost me there?

I said Boris was articulate.

Are you thinking about a lorry?

Urmstongran Thu 21-Nov-19 21:20:55

Labour are tactically naive.

Show me a progressive left government that has been elected by a G7 country in the last decade.

jura2 Thu 21-Nov-19 21:31:56

jura2 Thu 21-Nov-19 21:34:06

there was a very funny spoof of that interview- perhaps someone can find it.

SirChenjin Thu 21-Nov-19 21:39:56

Sorry GGMK3 you’ve lost me there?

The rest of us as non-Tories managed to work out what GGMk3 meant. Now I understand why you think Boris is intelligent.

GracesGranMK3 Thu 21-Nov-19 21:40:02

Sorry UG the Kindles are taking over the world again.

grapefruitpip Thu 21-Nov-19 21:59:57

Ok so we have " we will get Brexit" so far....

MaizieD Thu 21-Nov-19 22:23:59

As far as I can see, not only did the tories create a serious divide with their ill thought out attempt to stop their voters deserting them for UKIP but they are now creating another serious divide between members of the electorate who care about honesty and truth and those who have no moral compass whatsoever.

I don't think he's 'deceiving' many of his voters. I think they know he's a liar and a cheat. They just don't give a toss about integrity or the destruction of democracy.

Amagran Thu 21-Nov-19 23:08:28

I don't think he's 'deceiving' many of his voters. I think they know he's a liar and a cheat. They just don't give a toss about integrity or the destruction of democracy.

And that, MaizieD, is the really, really sad and worrying thing.

GracesGranMK3 Fri 22-Nov-19 00:09:28

Isn't it just. And the even sadder thing is they think it's worth it because they believe they know what they will get from having him in power.

GracesGranMK3 Fri 22-Nov-19 00:21:56

Boris Johnson has taken a grand total of just six press conference questions in this entire campaign. I wonder if he can continue to avoid "real" people.

Opal Fri 22-Nov-19 06:39:53

MaizieD "but they are now creating another serious divide between members of the electorate who care about honesty and truth and those who have no moral compass whatsoever."

Are you really saying that anyone who votes for the Tories has no morals? Do you have a link for that?

Sweden is not “socialist“ but does redistribute far more of its wealth through taxes. They have a small army, no nuclear weapons, no food banks or pound-shops. They have free daycare elderly care, 458 days maternity/ paternity leave, good pensions and a much higher standard of free health care. Yes high taxes and expensive alcohol but the population want to keep their high welfare standards . This is for those who sneer at “socialist “ policies and claim we can’t afford decent services. Just because our opposition party is poor doesn’t make BJ good - don’t pretend otherwise.
