I said a little prayer for them this morning - we must never forget!

GrannyGravy13 Mon 21-Oct-19 14:03:16

I remember seeing this in the news when I came home from school, something I will never forget RIP little children ??

Grannycool52 Mon 21-Oct-19 14:05:45

I remember it very well, though I just watched it on television. Even as a teenager I was very moved and I have never forgotten Aberfan.

How sad, how very sad. ?

Cherrytree59 Mon 21-Oct-19 14:12:40

RIP little Angels ?
And RIP the 28 adults who also lost their lives on that terrible day?

I'd only been at St Andrews uni for a couple of weeks at the time of the disaster.
It's one of those events where I know exactly where I was when I heard about it - rather like the assassination of JFK or 9/11.
As sad to think about today as it was then.

I had only been at secondary school a year. I was shocked when I saw it on our black and white tv and cried. Heartbreaking event.

Bathsheba Mon 21-Oct-19 15:10:08

One of the most tragic events in our history. Even after all these years I could sit and cry for the poor little innocent lives lost that day and, of course, for the adults. Such terrible suffering. flowers for Annie and all who were affected by this.

Brunette10 Mon 21-Oct-19 15:22:18

I remember clearly this day and watching the news unfold. It is a very sad day. RIP little ones.

Septimia Mon 21-Oct-19 15:57:53

I was mid-teens at the time. As Bathsheba says, it was one the most tragic events in our history. Although I had no relations there, my mum was upset because her grandmother and other members of the family had or still lived in Mountain Ash, not so very far away, so she felt some affinity with the people.

Just the mention of places in that area reminds me and makes me feel sad.

I realised yesterday evening that today was the anniversary of those awful events. My thoughts are with all those who grieve and remember all those who lost their lives that terrible day.

silverlining48 Mon 21-Oct-19 16:52:53

I too remember, the shock and the horror of that day. An avoidable tragedy which will be remembered for years to come.

Ellianne Mon 21-Oct-19 16:57:30

Like Septimia I remember my mum being profoundly upset at the time because she came from near there, though moved to London when I was born.

I believe the Queen's visit to Aberfan will be covered at some length in the next series of The Crown.

Today is A difficult day, faces and voices come to mind, sounds of the mothers, grandmothers sobbing, and the fathers and grandfathers, uncles, aunts, a very close community . And the silence when there was a whistle signaling a child could be heard , that silence was terrifying. The hope on faces when a little body was carried out.

When I joined this forum I sent flowers from the Grans of GransNet, I do so every year . Your flowers are in the memorial garden built on the site of the school.

It was a avoidable, and they never had justice

RIP

Thanks for the flowers from us all. Take care Anniebach. What awful memories to live with.

I know my grandfather was involved searching for survivors after the famous pit disaster of Senghennydd 1913. What a huge number of people died to make so much money.

Septimia Mon 21-Oct-19 17:49:29

Thank you, Anniebach, for sending the flowers. It brought tears to my eyes. My thoughts are with you and all others remembering those events today.

Carillion01 Mon 21-Oct-19 17:58:48

Well said Maw xx

To Annie, love and prayers for eternal rest sent to them today and always. Xx

Resurgam123 Mon 21-Oct-19 18:07:38

Oh yes that was awful. I had not long finished school and the news of that was dreadful. There was the "fight" the parents etc had to make to get people to take notice.

ladymuck Mon 21-Oct-19 18:16:55

What a lovely gesture, Anniebach. This is a tragedy which sticks in my mind too...so many individual stories of loss and grief. One of those events which will never be forgotten.

pinkquartz Mon 21-Oct-19 18:16:58

I was a child at school and unable to understand why the adults had let it happen.

It was such a horrible thing to happen. It still breaks my heart to think about the children and the village.

so sorry

Cherrytree59 Mon 21-Oct-19 18:18:59

Annie I didn't know about your kind gesture of sending flowers on behalf of Gransnetters.
Thank you so much daffodil daffodil daffodil

Calendargirl Mon 21-Oct-19 18:35:22

I watched the t.v. documentary on the 50th anniversary, three years ago. Unbearably sad, and so moving hearing from bereaved parents, their quiet dignified grief.

Auntieflo Mon 21-Oct-19 18:38:48

Annie, I am another who did not know of your lovely kind deed in sending flowers to the memorial garden.
Thank you, and flowers for you from me.

Anniebach Mon 21-Oct-19 18:45:42

May I explain about the flowers ? When I joined this forum there was a discussion about strikes , miners etc, Pit disasters came into it and Aberfan, I said I was from Aberfan, many spoke of the disaster and their feelings about it. When the anniversary was due I contacted HQ and asked if I could ask the forum if they would me to take flowers from us all (I could get home then ), many wanted me to so I have done so
every year, haven’t asked every year I just do it.
