Well anyone who thinks it’s appropriate to use that phrase is a wanker

suziewoozie Wed 13-Nov-19 11:52:41

Bye

Callistemon Wed 13-Nov-19 12:34:15

Well, I had to Google to find out what it meant.

I didn't think I'd led a sheltered life (not work wise anyway!) but that word passed me by.

Callistemon Wed 13-Nov-19 12:36:05

GN is a fount of knowledge!

Pantglas2 Wed 13-Nov-19 12:37:28

I remember my bible from Sunday school and RE lessons and obviously didn’t realise what it meant until I was an adult. Not sure it’s any more polite a term than the one that rhymes with banker.

Hetty58 Wed 13-Nov-19 12:42:34

Gonegirl, 'prim little old ladies' - there seem to be an awful lot on here!

Gonegirl Wed 13-Nov-19 12:45:14

Well, I had to google it. grin

All due respect to Boris for knowing what it means.

Callistemon Wed 13-Nov-19 12:49:37

I probably know more technical terms than many Hetty58, and am certainly not prim (but am old grin).
However, I missed that one!

Callistemon Wed 13-Nov-19 12:50:04

Not that little either!!

Gonegirl Wed 13-Nov-19 12:53:24

Alright! Present company excepted with the "prim little old ladies"! grin

grapefruitpip Wed 13-Nov-19 12:53:24

I'm not sure if the "excellent memory" post was for me?

My memory is reasonable but telling 2 people" to just fuck off the pair of you", somehow lodged itself in there

Gonegirl Wed 13-Nov-19 12:54:14

Yes. I expect it did. It was probably meant to

Amagran Wed 13-Nov-19 12:55:10

When I was working, our coded message to each other when we believed someone in the meeting was a 'banker' was to rearrange the letters and somehow incorporate a reference to Newark in our discussion. One colleague, who taught sign language, would just sit there making the sign for 'bullshit'.

Yes, childish I know, but it got us through some very boring and irritating meetings.

grapefruitpip Wed 13-Nov-19 12:55:44

How very rude you are.

What gives you the right to come on this forum and behave like this?

GracesGranMK3 Wed 13-Nov-19 12:59:26

I thought your OP was amusingly clever suziewoozie. I am rapidly beginning go think Johnson has been oversold and is neither.

Gonegirl Wed 13-Nov-19 13:23:41

When I said the "Just fuck off the pair of you" I seem to remember it was because two posters were picking quite relentlessly on another poster. I don't like that. I always feel I have to help the picked on one out. Don't know why. No one would ever do it for me.

One of the reasons I am not too keen on Gransnet.

Nightsky2 Wed 13-Nov-19 13:24:42

Too many prim little old ladies.
Beyond the pale , sunk to a new low for using a naughty word, shock, horror-NO

Gonegirl Wed 13-Nov-19 13:28:13

And no one ever thanks you for sticking up for them.

Gonegirl Wed 13-Nov-19 13:29:15

Right. Gransnet has lowered me quite enough for one day. Going out now.

lemongrove Wed 13-Nov-19 13:30:46

The sin of Onan, from the bible.
I doubt that all that many of the general public will even know what it means, far from being offended by it.
Although the term ‘pearl clutchers’ is overused, this is a prime example of it on GN.
Or......just more boring political point scoring ( faux outrage.)

merlotgran Wed 13-Nov-19 13:30:57

No one would ever do it for me.

Oh, I don't know, Gonegirl. Remember the good old days? grin

merlotgran Wed 13-Nov-19 13:32:36

I'm another one who had to google it.

Led a sheltered life!

Elegran Wed 13-Nov-19 13:55:16

Well, I did know what it meant - which is not exactly what Boris is using it to mean, so he is not quite as clever as he thinks he is.

I'm sure he didn't mean to inform us that Corbyn uses the withdrawal method of contraception when doing his duty to help a widowed sister-in-law to conceive a child who, under Old Testament tradition, would be considered to be his dead brother's child and thus inherit said brother's estate (rather than it reverting to him)

What is this obsession of his with masturbation, anyway? Spaffing up walls, Onan - did he spend any time actually learning anything at Eton?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-Nov-19 14:06:13

lemon the point is not whether many of the public either use the term or know what it means, the point is that a man who wants to become the prime minister uses the term about political opponents.

Bumping along the gutter does not do it for either many voter or the rest of the world. Can you imagine those politicians that are so admired would use such a term?

First a filthy limerick about Erdoğan, then his "spaffing up the wall" remark, and now the childish and immature toff Boris Johnson plunges deeper into the sewer using the term #onanism to attack Jeremy Corbyn. How can anyone seriously believe that Johnson is fit to be PM?

lemongrove Wed 13-Nov-19 14:10:02

I haven’t heard about the limerick ( was it funny?) also was it a private thing that somebody ‘leaked’?
Spaffing up the wall is a disgusting remark if uttered in public.
‘Political onanism’ doesn’t offend me at all.

Funnily enough, I was idling with the thought that JC must love himself, for surely anyone in his position could see that he personally is damaging the hopes of the LP. Yet still he remains. Total selfishness.
