So much evidence out there being ignored by the racist press

Jonathan Lis
@jonlis1

And yes, as a Jewish person I was also offended by the coded antisemitism the Tories and their media allies used to attack Ed Miliband. Not just the bacon sandwich, by the way. More the constant references to ‘north London’ and the fact he was going to ‘stab Britain in the back’.

Grr, NOT difficult. DIFFERENT.

GagaJo Wed 27-Nov-19 20:16:44

So you're deciding HAIR covering is OK but face isn't?

It is and should be, for the individual to chose. Not THAT difficult to full-face slap. Botox, thick foundation, false eyelashes, caked on lipstick, fake tan changing skin colour from pale white to darker than Afro Carribean. Still totally covered. Plenty of Geordie women walking around like that. No one complaining.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 20:13:24

I went to a school where nuns wore full-length clothing and headwear. But their faces were not covered. The requirement or choice, wherever it comes from, for women (always just women, never men) to cover their faces as well as everything else, is weird. It is hard to understand. I do understand the liberation idea about being covered/hidden by a voluminous garment. But faces and facial expressions for human beings, for all primates, a extremely important. Face coverings, except for protection in extreme conditions, are weird.

Because, Chestnut, it's personal choice (head/face covering).

Who the f**k is a racist, wife beating man, who impregnates women and then leaves them with the child, taking on NO fatherly responsibility, to tell ANY woman what she should or should not put on her head?

IF the Tories want to take the morally high ground over non existent anti semitism in the LP, they should have picked a whiter than white (pun intended) leader.

GagaJo Wed 27-Nov-19 20:07:15

Chestnut, Yes lots of threads attacking Boris, Farage and the Tories. It just proves how fanatical and aggressive the far left are. Sure thing luv. It's the left-wing that are wrong, not those with neo Nazi links (Farage) or making PUBLIC racist comments (Boris).

Baggs, I did some looking up and found that I had heard previously about ultra orthodox Jewish women wearing wigs because of a rule about covering their hair. (Yup, NOT for fashion or practical reasons) I don't recall hearing about the two fridges thing but I expect it's to do with keeping different kinds of food separate, (Keeping kosher).

No one's worrying about wig wearing Jewish ladies. Plenty of 'em in Gateshead parks where I spend a lot of time with DG.

But not obscene.

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 19:57:44

Penguins are lovely too, wonderful creatures.

However, I don't think that offensive and obscene have quite the same meaning.

Letter box and penguins are not obscene terms.

EllaKeat Wed 27-Nov-19 19:55:06

Callistemon 'letter box' used correctly is not offensive, but if you are slim and I called you a stick insect, or plump and I called you a blob, then stick insects and blobs would be offensive in those circumstances, would they not?
Not the best comparitors, but my battery is down to 3%, so thinking quickly!

Nught everyone - be kind to each other ?

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 19:50:09

I have never thought of 'letter box' as an obscene word.

When I drop in my Christmas cards I'll remember that.

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 19:48:31

We used to call the nuns 'penguins' when I was at school.

blush

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 19:47:24

And yet- any thread mocking the very strange attire of some North London communities would be seen as antisemite.

North London again.

I'm sure my DD wore some strange attire when she lived there (still does) even though she has moved from there.

EllaKeat Wed 27-Nov-19 19:46:19

merlotgran ??

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 19:46:09

merlotgran it was DH who mentioned it many years ago having travelled there - I never thought of it.
"Black absorbs heat" apparently.

merlotgran Wed 27-Nov-19 19:43:14

Dave Allen anyone?

Gonegirl Wed 27-Nov-19 19:42:41

Please explain about the obscene name Bluebell.

Gonegirl Wed 27-Nov-19 19:40:03

I would definitely make jokes about nuns if I thought of any.

Gonegirl Wed 27-Nov-19 19:38:50

an obscene name

WTF!!! angry

EllaKeat Wed 27-Nov-19 19:38:01

BlueBelle wish there was a 'like' button.

BlueBelle Wed 27-Nov-19 19:36:01

this is unpleasant I have lived with Muslims and it is usually the women who do or don’t decide to wear their chosen garments I have lived with a family where some chose to wear and some chose not too but like in any society I m sure there are some controlling men who tell their wives what to wear (and that’s not confined to any particularly ethnicity ) wouldn’t it be nice if we could accept people no matter their differences

Would you throw these deriding comments at Catholic nuns who at my school wore ankle length black robes with white wimples and black head coverings with no hair allowed to be shown Is that so different would you call an obscene name to them, no I thought not but Muslims are easy game aren’t they

Johnson has made many racist remarks but we should have more understanding and thought than that very silly buffer who likes to be seen as a ‘funny endearing man’

jura2 Wed 27-Nov-19 19:24:31

And yet- any thread mocking the very strange attire of some North London communities would be seen as antisemite. For me, it is all wrong and unfair- what I find amazingly hypocrite it that it is ok to mock the attire related to some sections of one religion, but not of another. Either it is wrong for all- or not. And a reminder that such specific 'attire' is more cultural and specific to some sections of said religious communities- and not to others in the 'same' religion.

Either it is fair game, or it is not- for all.

merlotgran Wed 27-Nov-19 19:16:50

Callistemon. I've always found it odd that men in the middle East wear cool, white garments whereas it's the women who are covered from head to toe in heat absorbing black. hmm

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 18:56:26

Oh yes I agree, Christians have always been fair game, jura!
Even on here

Gonegirl Wed 27-Nov-19 18:56:25

I know that jura. I would never condone any hate speech. But joking about a burqua? Come on!

Gonegirl Wed 27-Nov-19 18:54:53

I am far from anti-Semitic. In fact no one could be less anti-Semitic than me. But kosher is cruel.

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 18:54:48

Well, our lasagne combines meat and dairy.
