So much evidence out there being ignored by the racist press

Jonathan Lis
@jonlis1

And yes, as a Jewish person I was also offended by the coded antisemitism the Tories and their media allies used to attack Ed Miliband. Not just the bacon sandwich, by the way. More the constant references to ‘north London’ and the fact he was going to ‘stab Britain in the back’.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 17:36:18

On the practical side, I should think a burqa wearer's vision is somewhat restricted. Which is not good.

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 17:36:15

I don't understand the North London reference either (and DD used to live there confused)
Nor stab Britain in the back I've heard of politicians doing it to each other, metaphorically speaking of course
Nor dog whistle politics

Whatever happened to the Campaign for Plain English?

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 17:34:30

Burka is used oppressively. We all know this. Can we have some nuance here please? Are we talking about the Taliban in Afghanistan or a Mum on the school run in Rochdale.

A mum wearing a burka in the UK is not being oppressive but she moght be being oppressed. Any bunch of people (usually men) making women wear burkas or even hijab when the women would rather not (see places in the Middle East where women can be jailed for taking their head covering off) is oppressive. In my opinion the garment itself is oppressive, as would be any garment covering the face of a human being so completely.

I hope that is sufficient context for you to understand what I'm saying, gfp.

I can’t agree, we no longer have freedom of speech in this country.

Gonegirl Wed 27-Nov-19 17:21:08

grapefruitpip would you please stop attacking me.

Chestnut Wed 27-Nov-19 16:55:55

grapefruitpip - brainwashing from birth means teaching a child that is what they must do. So that by the time they grow up it is instilled in them and they automatically 'choose' to do that thing. That is what religion has always done, controlled people.

grapefruitpip Wed 27-Nov-19 16:54:39

Oh yeah, that's me fanatical , aggressive and far far left. Grrrrrr.

May I humbly suggest Farage ( right wing idiot), BJ, ( right wing chancer) and the Tories not the same thing.

Chestnut Wed 27-Nov-19 16:49:54

Yes lots of threads attacking Boris, Farage and the Tories. It just proves how fanatical and aggressive the far left are.

grapefruitpip Wed 27-Nov-19 16:47:04

OK Let's clear up a couple of things....

1. I asked you not to attack me Gone girl because I was nervous you may.

2. Nobody has answered my question as to how comparing a woman in a burqa to a letterbox is funny.

3. Those of you who refer to "brainwashing" where do you get your information from please? Have you asked Muslim women about their choices?

4.*Burka is used oppressively. We all know this*. Can we have some nuance here please? Are we talking about the Taliban in Afghanistan or a Mum on the school run in Rochdale.

lemongrove Wed 27-Nov-19 16:44:52

Johnson has apologised for any hurt caused by his comments
And if he has any sense will soon announce an enquiry into Islamaphobia within the Party.
Pity that Corbyn still refuses to apologise for all the anti-semitism within the LP.
The North London and stab in the back are not Jewish ‘things’
Plenty of non Jewish people live there and stab in the back is a phrase in common usage.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 16:41:22

I think most people who wear a wig do so for practical reasons rather than because of brainwashing, likewise owning a fridge, cooker, etc.

Persuade me that a burka is a practical garment if you can.

lemongrove Wed 27-Nov-19 16:40:24

WWM2 is starting lots of threads with anti Conservative OP’s, hadn’t you noticed Oldwoman70 ?
Not that it’s influencing anyone mind you ( more like the opposite.)

Oldwoman70 Wed 27-Nov-19 16:33:56

A small digression here - I find the thread title to be offensive. I vote Conservative but by no stretch of the imagination am I racist.

jura2 Wed 27-Nov-19 16:12:59

Chestnut ''Well if you're brainwashed from birth into believing you should cover yourself from head to toe in black then that is what you will want to do! Indeed it will be your free will.''

same with wearing a wig, having 2 fridges to separate foods. And so many more. Why is it that one form of 'brainwashing' is perceived as 'wrong' and others as 'right'? Who decides?

Chestnut Wed 27-Nov-19 16:08:15

That is my point, Baggs. You choose to do something because you believe in it. But the question is why you believe it in the first place.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 16:07:21

In case anyone's interested, Steve Stewart Williams's book, The Ape that Understood the Universe has some good stuff in it about cultural memes that are associated with religious faiths, how they work and so forth.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 16:03:50

Except a brainwashed decision is not free.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 16:03:17

Well said, chestnut. The same applies to all sorts of cultutal/religious rules.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 16:02:12

When men 'choose' to wear burkas I might agree that it's a free choice. Not before.

Chestnut Wed 27-Nov-19 16:01:04

Well if you're brainwashed from birth into believing you should cover yourself from head to toe in black then that is what you will want to do! Indeed it will be your free will.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 16:00:59

A burka/niqab, tight to the head, as they are, is not some frothy bit of stiff white veil that stands out from your skin and doesn't really 'hide' your face anyway. Never did understand what they were/are for, but I guess that applies to plenty of 'fashion'.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 15:58:53

Even a blimmin' midge net over your face is oppressive. Try going around in one all day if you think not.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 15:56:12

Patronising women by assuming they can't pick their own clothing

In some places (not UK, I hope) they can't. That is the point. Burka is used oppressively. We all know this.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 15:54:04

Beg your pardon! I didn't read far enough. I'm agreeing with opal.

Chestnut Wed 27-Nov-19 15:53:25

GagaJo - why have you brought up a headscarf when no-one has objected to them? It is the full veil that's the problem because we like to see people's faces!

It seems Labour are trying to distract everyone from Corbyn's disastrous interview with Andrew Neil by playing the racism card (always a good one to keep up your sleeve).
