“20,000 more police are operating on our streets to fight crime and bring crime down”
Boris Johnson in a speech in Oldham, live on Sky News
15 November 2019

Claim

The prime minister has regularly claimed that one of his government’s plans is to recruit 20,000 additional police officers. In this instance, he said that 20,000 more police “are operating” on our streets, suggesting that his government had already achieved this goal.

Facts

Recruitment will take place over three years and do no more than replace the drop in officer numbers seen since the Conservatives came to power in 2010.

Verdict

Johnson lied. It is a realistic possibility that the Conservatives will recruit an additional 20,000 police officers, but it will take several years and will only cover cuts they have already made.

"Google has banned eight different adverts paid for by the Conservatives over the last month because they broke its rules"

Johnson seems to be "going right out of his way" to demonstrate to all and sundry what total Buffoon he is.

What I am trying to work out in my mind is, does he believe that acting and being as verbally untruthfull as he has over the past few days is a deliberate strategic strategy being he believes it will gain him votes?

Luckygirl Mon 02-Dec-19 09:24:09

Well - bizarrely you may be right.

The more he lies and proves himself a man of no morals, the more people seem to like him. Unbelievable.

MawB Mon 02-Dec-19 09:29:11

Oops posted this previously on the wrong thread - trying again though

Urmstongran Mon 02-Dec-19 09:33:49

All politicians lie (when it suits them). It must be in the T&C of the job.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 02-Dec-19 09:38:16

I can’t remember another election like this one though.

In any “normal” election the issues are debated and the candidates are questioned.

But all we have is the candidate for Uxbridge repeating one or two mantras. Each time they are shown to be lies, but the next time he is questioned he repeats the same lies again.

It is utterly bizarre and deeply troubling.

MaizieD Mon 02-Dec-19 10:07:15

'All politicians lie' must be one of the most depressing statements ever. It says to me that the person saying it has no wish for our democracy to survive. Because a democracy cannot be based on lies, corruption and contempt for the law.

If you know that politicians are lying you do democracy no favours by shrugging your shoulders and going along with it. It is within your power not to vote for lying politicians.

Jeez, if you know that they are lying how can you be in any way sure that the promises that sway you to vote for them will be implemented if they are elected?

Callistemon Mon 02-Dec-19 10:11:42

Jeremy Corbyn doesn't lie.
He just prevaricates and refuses to answer the question.

I thought that that aas what politicians did - hence 'a politician's answer'

GrannyGravy13 Mon 02-Dec-19 10:13:48

Perhaps it's time that when a Political Party publishes its manifesto that it should become a legally binding document.

As it stands, we all know that the majority of items set out within them will never come to fruition and in some cases the opposite will happen.

Gonegirl Mon 02-Dec-19 10:14:50

That's a good one Maw. grin

I don't think it matters if he lies, or about the rest of his behaviour either tbh . Just so long as he can get on with the job on hand and guide the UK through the next year or two.

There just seems to be more actual intelligence knocking around amongst the tories.

Luckygirl Mon 02-Dec-19 10:38:30

It doesn't matter if he lies????!!!! Unbelievable.

No wonder we are in such a mess.

It is really the ONLY thing that matters.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 02-Dec-19 10:41:49

gonegirl as Johnson lies, and you have accepted that he does, which issues will he get on with? Because he lies you haven’t a clue what he will do, and neither does anyone else

MaizieD Mon 02-Dec-19 10:42:54

Unbelieveable

Isn't it just, Luckygirl.

And these are the folks who keep on and on about 'democracy'! In reality they are destroying it...

Completely missed my last point. How can you be sure that the lies you voted for are going to be implemented?

lemongrove Mon 02-Dec-19 10:44:17

Boris Johnson.......we all know what he’s like, and although popular with the Conservative Party members and with a lot of people, (Conservative or Labour actually) in the UK in general ( the man in the street) he was never the most suitable for the job, just the most popular.
The same goes for Corbyn...at the time he was very popular with LP members and in the street ( nobody knew much about him.) So, popular but unsuitable for the job.
However, we are where we are, and just about anybody would be better as PM than Corbyn, including Boris Johnson.

Urmstongran Mon 02-Dec-19 10:50:33

They all do it!

Swinson campaigned on Revoke (originally) and has since changed her campaign tone.

JMcD is economical with the truth.

David Cameron told us the referendum was a ‘once in a lifetime’ choice.

Dianne Abbott can’t add up big numbers.

It’s difficult to know where to place that cross on a ballot paper.

But I want to get Brexit done so my choice is limited.

Ginny42 Mon 02-Dec-19 10:55:56

It doesn't matter if he lies???? That is truly depressing. It matters a great deal.

As far as I am aware we still expect witnesses and defendants to swear that they will tell the truth in a court of law. If the PM can get away with lying, why ask witnesses to swear on a bible to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

If that is no longer the case, then I stand to be corrected.

Ginny42 Mon 02-Dec-19 10:59:30

Urmston, watch Nicky Morgan explain the maths of the promised 50,000 new nurses and leave Dianne Abbot's mathematical ability out of the equation.

Yehbutnobut Mon 02-Dec-19 11:38:47

Not all politicians lie Urmstongran (god! I hate those trotted our clichés which reflect an inability to think for oneself). Many do promise the earth but this is a new style of liar.

Boris is only mimicking his buddy Trump.

EllanVannin Mon 02-Dec-19 11:55:53

Well if Boris mimics Trump about the NHS's demise, that'll be the end of a Conservative government in this country for ever.

Gonegirl Mon 02-Dec-19 12:13:25

Whitewave I think he will get the dreaded (by me) Brexit over and out of the way. (It has to be done) And, hopefully, set up new trade deals.

Gonegirl Mon 02-Dec-19 12:14:16

I stand firmly by what I have posted on here.

FarNorth Mon 02-Dec-19 12:55:55

Gonegirl why do you think a habitual liar will be able to negotiate honestly?

EllanVannin Mon 02-Dec-19 13:28:40

I'd rather the EU be behind this country and not Boris. How I rue the day that this insane argument of leaving ever came about.

This country can't function without a backup, there's nobody responsible enough to run it single-handedly. I just fear the worst and fear more for the future !
