All the hyperbole, the grandstanding the rhetoric all over. We have a result and the British public have spoken. We have a conservative government.
Are we surprised?

Great - democracy has prevailed with the help of prayers

Urmstongran Fri 13-Dec-19 15:28:43

And for those saying the overall percentage was low for Boris - Since 1935, no administration has taken office with more than 50%of the popular vote.

In 2005, Labour won a 66-seat majority with just 35% of the vote on a 61% turnout – the support, in other words, of about 22%of the total electorate!

Yet Tony Blair’s right to govern on such a narrow mandate was not seriously questioned, certainly not by Labour MPs, nor by their opponents.

maddyone Fri 13-Dec-19 15:32:08

Thank you for that information Urmstongran, it’s good to know that Blair had such a narrow mandate when anyone questions BJ’s.

So very pleased ....we voted leave and many parties have tried to undermine democracy ....the people have punished them...rightly so ...for going against a democratic decision...Corbyn is a disaster ....the old gentle grandad look doesn’t fool me...i remember the 1970s and the chaos with strikes and unions holding the country to ransome...and McDonnell is very dangerous too...Diane Abbott...no words ..I now feel positive for the first time in nearly four years .

Barmeyoldbat Fri 13-Dec-19 15:38:24

If we had proportional voting the result would have been different Labour had more votes than the Tories. I just can't believe that the people in say Blackpool ,a deprived area, voted Tory,, what exactly do they think they will gain by leaving he EU, we will see a rise in food prices, probably be a medicine shortage and small business go down the pan. Private schools will still pay o VAT while state schools do, nothing will be done about social care and the rich will just richer.

Still we will have gained our freedom, for what I have no idea, and everything will rosie. I would rather be under Labour than an Eton led government.

Chestnut Fri 13-Dec-19 15:40:41

Urmstongran - people weren't quite so ready to dispute the results back then it seems. They accepted a democratic vote. This has all changed since 2016 as we now constantly get the argument that more people didn't cast the winning vote than those who did. It was the same earlier this year in the European Election when the Brexit Party turned the map Brexit blue. They wouldn't accept this as a vote for Brexit when it so clearly was.

Magicnonna Fri 13-Dec-19 15:49:33

Wonderful news, couldn't be more chuffed

Doreen5 Fri 13-Dec-19 15:51:15

Delighted at the result - couldn't have been better!

JenniferEccles Fri 13-Dec-19 15:58:55

Before I comment anymore about alleged child poverty it is important to realise that far too many feckless people persist in producing child after child even though they can’t afford to look after them properly.

We all know it goes on.

In this day and age of effective contraception there is no excuse.

If you can’t afford children don’t have them.

I resent my taxes being used to support some irresponsible family.

Mollygo Fri 13-Dec-19 16:01:02

Only when the party in power opts for PR at the next election will it have a chance of happening. I’m surprised labour isn’t asking for a re-election because they don’t like the result. That’s what we seem to do in the UK now.

Urmstongran Fri 13-Dec-19 16:01:46

??

Also, a friend of mine ‘does’ Twitter (I don't).

Apparently Lily Allen is off Twitter. This election just keeps on giving‼️

Urmstongran Fri 13-Dec-19 16:17:53

Apparently Kier Starmer wants to "help the Party understand" what went wrong.....

I’ll give you this for free matey ......

Brexit and Corbyn.....

One is wanted , one isn't!

50/50?
Or 'phone a friend'??

I wish to point out to those angsting about the result that Conservatives are good, honest, law abiding, tax paying , hardworking people who have just as much care for the NHS and their fellow man as the angsters. Some folks do virtue signalling and, on the whole, Conservatives do virtue.

As for the question, I have been utterly terrified of a hard left, Marxist, anti Semitic party gaining power and the relief I have felt today has been like walking on air.

No one party can please everyone but today we have had stability, prosperity, truth and freedom endorsed by the sense of the British electorate.

grammargran Fri 13-Dec-19 16:21:10

Well, I’m totally depressed, one of the reasons being at 80, I’m probably going to be stuck with a Tory government for the rest of my life. And have people overlooked the fact that because of the huge swing to the Tories, some of us are unlucky enough still to be saddled with mediocre MPs who have been returned merely because they sport a blue rosette? Ours was so complacent about his 22,500 majority he didn’t bother to show up at the hustings and neither did the neighbouring MP with a 25,000 majority who was still returned in spite of coming 650th out of 650 in a league table of MPs. Ours never holds surgeries and is hardly seen anywhere - they don’t deserve people’s votes and that’s what makes me angry: arrogance.

Urmstongran Fri 13-Dec-19 16:25:15

Ah stop worrying - Diane Abbott has had a recount and Labour now have the most seats!
?

Polly4t42 Fri 13-Dec-19 16:26:17

Sad so sad, what has happened to our once great nation, thank goodness we still have our Queen as head of state. As it’s such an embarrassment to have Boris as our PM. Let’s hope he keeps some of his promises and he doesn’t trade away our NHS. Fat cats rule again, a former Conservative supporter.

Yehbutnobut Fri 13-Dec-19 16:27:14

Eh by gum JE tha’s captured reet well the spirit that won t’election. Glad tha’ can state tha’ honest opinion now ?

Anniebach Fri 13-Dec-19 16:30:48

Urmstongran are you sure she had her calculator with her ?
?

Urmstongran Fri 13-Dec-19 16:30:51

Imagine being Luciana Berger.. parachuted into Finchley only to lose!

4allweknow Fri 13-Dec-19 16:31:26

Fiachna50 I too have family on both sides off the border, very close family in fact. I too cannot see what so many others seem to see about livng in Scotland. Of course the free tuition fees, the lessening of entrance qualification which probably go with the huge reduction in education standards. The free prescriptions were introduced to save money as the administrations costs outweighed the cost of drugs not as a generous gesture to the population. As for not leaving the EU, has the powers at be in Brussels changed stance from the last referendum ie Scotland will be out on becoming independent and will take years to re enter especially as Spain will veto everything due to Catalonia. I despair!

Anniebach Fri 13-Dec-19 16:35:09

I feel sorry for Luciana Berger , driven out of the Labour Party
because she is a Jew.

Ruth Smeeth lost her seat too.

Think only Margaret Hodge left,

Luckygirl Fri 13-Dec-19 16:46:33

I wish to point out to those angsting about the result that Conservatives are good, honest, law abiding, tax paying , hardworking people who have just as much care for the NHS and their fellow man as the angsters. Some folks do virtue signalling and, on the whole, Conservatives do virtue. Wow! - where did that idea come from!!??

I think you are quite wrong sadly. A party that can create a benefit (that is the only port of call for those in need) that requires the applicant to wait 5 weeks before it kicks in has no regard whatsoever for his/her fellowmen - seriously, what did they think people (including children) with nothing would live on in those 5 weeks? Ah - I remember - food banks - a feature of the Tory era.

Where exactly is the virtue in that? I am struggling to spot it.

Just because someone states their concern for the under-privileged under a Tory government does not mean they are "virtue signalling" - it simply means they are very worried indeed. And rightly so.

I would like it if those who are happy with this result might list the things that the last 10 years have achieved for the underprivileged, rather than accusing those who are concerned about it of virtue signalling. Let's hear some of the virtue that the Tories have achieved. Tell us all exactly how the Tory party "does virtue."

Seriously - I am not joking or having a dig - I would simply be really interested to know.

maddyone Fri 13-Dec-19 16:54:24

Can’t help it, I have to correct you Barmeyoldbat, state schools do not pay VAT. If anything is bought outside of the educational catalogues by staff who then wish to claim back what they have spent, they have to produce a VAT receipt, not just an ordinary receipt. Without the VAT receipt, the school I worked at refused to reimburse the teacher!

Chestnut Fri 13-Dec-19 16:57:14

The British people certainly know how to deal with troublemakers through the ballot box. Kick the bu**ers out! So many arch-remainer MPs who fought tooth and nail to block Brexit for the last three years and have caused so much trouble.....have all lost their seats! Anna Soubry, Dominic Grieve, David Gauke, Chuka Umunna etc. etc. And of course they kicked out Jo Swinson who wanted to stop Brexit altogether.
The people have certainly spoken!
