All the hyperbole, the grandstanding the rhetoric all over. We have a result and the British public have spoken. We have a conservative government.
Are we surprised?

growstuff Fri 13-Dec-19 11:35:54

We have to stay calm, rational and hold Johnson to account. He won't be able to make excuses and will have to own his own mess.

It's going to be tough and we have to find the strength to be kind to each other. Some people don't deserve our kindness, so let them stew.

sarahellenwhitney Fri 13-Dec-19 11:38:20

I raise my wine to all those who made this result possible.

Dinahmo Fri 13-Dec-19 11:42:10

It's still a minority government. 43.6 voted for the Tories, add in the 2% that voted for the Brexit Party and it's still a minority. Even Thatcher's governments were minorities. We really do need a PR so that everyone is properly represented.

absthame Fri 13-Dec-19 11:47:19

However, I'm p'd off with the extreme left of the LP and their crocodile tears. They have done it again, fed the Tories steroids and let them loose to further add to the woes of the have not, just as they did with Thatcher and cried it's all Brexit. If they really cared they would have left the stage 2 years ago rather than arrogantly carried on. AND they are intent on carrying it on into the future. McCluskey should be .............

MamaCaz Fri 13-Dec-19 11:51:00

So that's it - the turkeys really have voted for Christmas, it seems!

Blondiescot Fri 13-Dec-19 11:53:57

Exactly, MamaCaz! A friend of mine described it as "an astonishing act of self-harm", which I think sums it up precisely. God help anyone who is struggling financially, homeless, unemployed or who needs, or is likely to need to call upon our NHS or emergency services.

MamaCaz Fri 13-Dec-19 11:53:58

Dinahmo

Thank you for supplying those figures.
I was wondering earlier how it all added added up, but haven't had time to look it up.

Right. I'm off here now for the next few days.

Bobdoesit Fri 13-Dec-19 11:54:29

Hopefully the start of better times to come. Certainly far better than Corbyn being in No. 10.

MargaretinNorthant Fri 13-Dec-19 11:57:59

The little boy on the floor in hospital. Did you know it was a put up job? His own mother took him off a trolley, laid him on the floor, covered him with a blanket, took the photograph and sent it to the press. She then put him back on the trolley. This was reported in the news the day after the picture appeared. The child was actually seen within twenty minutes, and can be seen wearing an oxygen mask. What sort of mother does this?

Blondiescot Fri 13-Dec-19 12:01:04

MargaretinNorthant, that is quite simply untrue. The original story was thoroughly checked and verified by the reporter who wrote it, and has been confirmed by the hospital where the child was treated, who have also apologised to his family for his poor treatment.

ALANaV
Your the second person now on these 'election' threads that think that now we are leaving the eu that you can't move to the eu: yes you can. I did it.
How did a friend of mine build houses in France before we joined the common market?

Too many of you have forgotten that there was a life before the eu and there's a life outside it.

Johnm Fri 13-Dec-19 12:01:28

I have been cheated, lied to and my democratic rights trampled on. I voted to Remain in EC in 1975 as did over 60% of the country, and Cameron trampled all over this democratic vote!

MerylStreep Fri 13-Dec-19 12:03:18

ALAN I meant to say that I bought a property in a country that wasn't in the eu.

susani2dly Fri 13-Dec-19 12:03:32

Thank goodness for common sense. We could not have continued with a House of Commons that was destroying itself. We had no choice. Now we can move on.

lilydily9 Fri 13-Dec-19 12:07:02

I did think the Conservatives would win but I was surprised at their majority. The election may be over but there is still a lot of work ahead and I just hope that Boris delivers on all his promises.

Cherrytree59 Fri 13-Dec-19 12:09:28

Hopefully no more groundhog day?
We need to move on.

Pleased to see the Pound responding favourably.£££⬆️

growstuff Fri 13-Dec-19 12:09:43

MerylStreep The difference is that one needs the finances to move to another country in the EU. Paying for healthcare is just a start. I have a friend who will inherit a house in Germany when his mother dies. He had intended to retire to Germany and has researched this thoroughly. He doesn't have German nationality (because he can't inherit it via his mother) and it's almost certain that he will have to sell the house in Germany when the time comes and stay in the UK. His daughter is about to marry a German national, so he will be the only one in his extended family unable to live in Germany.

JeannieB44 Fri 13-Dec-19 12:09:51

Trying to look for positives record number of women MPs and hopefully the last we will hear of Nigel Farage.

growstuff Fri 13-Dec-19 12:10:57

MargaretinNorthant Why are you still peddling a lie?

growstuff Fri 13-Dec-19 12:12:25

I'm with you on that Jeannie. The majority of the LibDem MPs (11 of them) are women and one of them is from a BAME background. That's a positive.

CarlyD7 Fri 13-Dec-19 12:13:36

That is not true. The Yorkshire Post originally reported the story and they checked with hospital staff to make sure it was true. The person who called out "fake" has since, mysteriously, disappeared from social media. If you want to read the true story, try going to the Yorkshire Post website and search for "Do not believe a stranger on social media who disappears into the night' - An open letter from our editor to you".

I didn't know what to expect. I'm a little surprised that the Conservatives held Broxtowe but not terribly surprised to see the back of Anna Soubry who did herself no favours by calling her electorate ignorant because they didn't agree with her. Kicked into third place.

jefm Fri 13-Dec-19 12:21:34

The people have spoken . Democracy prevails in this country. Thank you to all those labour voters who have never voted conservative before. They recognised Corbyn and his far left comrades for who they are. The FTSE has gone up the Euro has surged up business is back in the UK. Fantastic results

Morganrae Fri 13-Dec-19 12:25:10

I'm dumbfounded, but that's democracy. My biggest concern is the wonderful NHS.
