Two days into the New Year and Trump sets the whole of world peace into jeopardy There will be huge repercussions

Yehbutnobut Sun 05-Jan-20 15:56:02

Ug why can’t Iran be left alone to go its own way? Trump supports many dictators and evil regimes anyway.

trisher Sun 05-Jan-20 16:25:12

As to what is really going on it's quite simple. In order to stop people examining what is going wrong in the society they live in, to distract them and keep them from civil unrest, you need an enemy. The US have had many through the years. Iran was actually in the process of returning to ordinary life. It was building diplomatic relationships, it was becoming a holiday destination, and as there aren't that many places left where the US can wage war that had to be stopped.
I still wonder that there is so little recognition of the damage that is done to people when they are trained to kill. And think it isn't surprising that some ex-service personnel refuse to use the forces welfare service. After all would you expect the victim of bullying to accept counselling from the bully?

Opal Sun 05-Jan-20 16:30:26

"^And at the moment Trump is posing a terrible threat to us all^."

Might I suggest that it is actually the Iranian regime that is posing a terrible threat? How much are the USA supposed to put up with before taking action? I thought their response was considered and appropriate, no civilians were injured and they took out a man responsible for planning numerous attacks on their armed forces and citizens, in a targeted and precise attack. Yes it may well have repercussions, but at what point do you say to an evil regime like Iran that "enough is enough"?

trisher Sun 05-Jan-20 16:35:54

I don't know Opal at what point do you say to an evil regime like Saudi Arabia enough is enough? Perhaps when they are bombing innocent civilians in Yemen. Oh no I forgot! you just keep supplying them with the technology to do it!

Caro6699 Sun 05-Jan-20 16:40:28

As my dear mother used to say.
If you pull a Tigers tail you can expect to get bitten.
I am not a DT fan but I hope Iran will take note and further in incidents can be avoided for all our sakes

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 16:55:05

Iran was in the process of returning to ordinary life

Ordinary life fighting proxy wars, ordinary life where women are suppressed and subject to a fatwah if they ride a bicycle!, ordinary life calling another country Satan, an ordinary lovely holiday destination.

Pity, I was planning a trip to the Caspian Sea.

Urmstongran Sun 05-Jan-20 16:58:56

Someone needs to build a wall around the whole of the Middle East and forget about it. They're stuck in the Middle Ages and had enough time to evolve but they refuse.

Chanting ‘death to America’ in parliament and not even one woman. Like something out a history book. What a failed state I feel sorry for their people.

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 16:59:50

I don't think opal is alone in supplying weapons to Saudi.

Ordinary pleasant life in Iran
Evil regime in Saudi

Where do you do find this propaganda, trisher?

They are both as bad fighting their proxy war and starving
children to death in Yemen.

And the Army Welfare personnel are bullies.

Chewbacca Sun 05-Jan-20 17:31:27

Iran was actually in the process of returning to ordinary life. It was building diplomatic relationships, it was becoming a holiday destination.

Is that so? These Iranians don't seem to agree with you:

The Spectator, January 2019:

Iran has been miserable ever since the Ayatollah Khomeini returned from his Parisian exile to usher in his total Shiite state. It’s a suffocating place, with Islamic conformity enforced on pain of flogging, jail and death, and a lousy, mismanaged economy made worse by US sanctions.
For all its ancient civilisational glories, Iran is also a cruel, spiritually deracinated land. I increasingly struggle to decide where the blame lies: with the present regime or some deeper ailment in the national soul.

This could perhaps explain why, for the last 3 years, Iranians have topped the league tables of nationalities seeking asylum in the UK. One asylum seeker said “Iran was like hell,” he says. “I prefer to sleep in cardboard here rather than live in Iran

In 2018, more than 4000 Iranians sought asylum here and that number has increased since then, with the number of small boats carrying them from France in the last year.

However trisher, should you decide to take your holiday in Tehran, (or elsewhere in Iran), don't forget to send us a postcard telling us how delightful it is. hmm

jura2 Sun 05-Jan-20 17:38:35

Totally irrelevant however- notice you have not responded about Saudi.

MerylStreep Sun 05-Jan-20 17:40:29

trisha
If Iran is returning to ordinary life why did Soleimani have killed hundreds of young male Iranians who were protesting for an ordinary life

Chewbacca Sun 05-Jan-20 17:41:08

That's because this thread is about Trump. And Iran. Not Saudi Arabia.

MerylStreep Sun 05-Jan-20 17:45:45

trisha
Has it crossed your mind that you wouldn't last 5 mins in Iran with your out spoken views, probably not ?

trisher Sun 05-Jan-20 17:55:33

Callistemon As far as a holiday destination is concerned a friend has just returned. And there are lots of websites advertising holidays.
It isn't illegal to ride a bike and women are protesting about being told they shouldn't ride one emirateswoman.com/women-iran-defy-fatwa-get-bikes/
There are more women working in Iran than in Saudi and they are better educated.
If both regimes are as bad as each other why are we attacking one and befriending the other? -possibly because one only kills Yemenis?
We could of course forget the Saudi funding of Islamic State.
It is sad that you accuse me of posting propaganda when you have such a slight grasp of the reality.
As for the Army I didn't call them bullies. I explained the inability to use welfare services may be because it was supplied by the people who caused the damage.

Fennel Sun 05-Jan-20 17:58:21

Our eldest and his family have been living and working in Kuwait since 1995. Kuwait is a tiny country right on the doorsteps of Iran and Iraq.
Thank God they had the sense to find jobs elsewhere - son finished his contract there at the end of 2019. His wife and children left earlier.
The situation is very frightening, I hope BJ isn't stupid enough to commit us to supporting Trump.

Chewbacca Sun 05-Jan-20 18:04:29

I'd be willing to take on board that Iran is as free thinking and liberal as you say trisher but the reports coming from the Iranian nationals who are willing to risk their lives to get the hell out of there, seem to contradict your claim. So who has a slight grasp on reality? You? Or the 4000,0000+ (as at 2016) Iranian people who fled for their lives to other countries and continue to do so?

trisher Sun 05-Jan-20 18:04:54

Urmstongran There are currently 17 women in the Iranian parliament, not many but they are there.

Chewbacca Sun 05-Jan-20 18:08:51

Correction 400,000+ not 4000,0000+

rosecarmel Sun 05-Jan-20 18:29:16

Iran dropped nuclear deal ..

trisher Sun 05-Jan-20 18:30:33

Chewbacca I didn't say Iran is free thinking and liberal, I did say it was moving forward and attempting to normalise things. It takes time. But things were in the process of changing. What will happen now is unknown. Personally I have huge doubts about why Trump has acted now. Iran is a poor country and as has been posted many times on GN many people arriving here are economic migrants. (apparently not Iranians though). I don't dispute there is a reactionary Islamic government, I just don't see how an attack on a local hero will help to create regime change. And perhaps it wasn't intended to.

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 18:30:54

Did you read my post properly trisher?
Obviously not!

I said both were as bad as each other fighting a proxy war in another land.
But misinterpret it as you wish.

Personally, I prefer Devon or Cornwall although I am sure your friend enjoyed Iran.
What did Mandy R-D say?
He (she) would say that wouldn't he (she)!!

You did call Army Welfare personnel bullies.
would you expect the victim of bullying to accept counselling from the bully?
Clear and precise.

Do you really believe what you post on this thread or are you just playing Devil's Advocate?
You are not normally like this.

trisher Sun 05-Jan-20 18:34:12

I do wish I could go to Tehran lthough and travel through Iran it has some great Persian historical sites.

jura2 Sun 05-Jan-20 18:40:48

Persia was one of the most advanced culture ever - so the destruction is tragic, wherever it comes from.

We are friends with Saudi, because of oil and (and arms sales)

We are enemies of Iran, because of oil

anyone who believes we are there to save anyone or help with human rights, is just 100% deluded sad

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 18:41:16

Well, let's hope they will be fine.

Destroying those would be an act of terrorism.

rosecarmel Sun 05-Jan-20 18:41:35

And lovely rugs ... ugh ..
