Two days into the New Year and Trump sets the whole of world peace into jeopardy There will be huge repercussions

More doom laden predictions from you. Just the same as when the referendum was announced. You predicted then that the planes would stop flying and the ferries would stop running.

JenniferEccles Tue 07-Jan-20 13:16:09

No wonder there are so many children being prescribed antidepressants if they overhear adults talking idiotically about WW3.

For goodness sake stop all this over reacting and scaremongering.

Chewbacca Tue 07-Jan-20 13:23:21

You're right MerylStreep; most of us are very concerned about the ramifications of Trump's stupidity but the continual hysterical predictions of doom and disaster, of things that we have no personal control of, are actually counter productive and very wearing. The whole world is on tenterhooks wondering how this will pan out and I can't see how running around declaring that a world war will ensue is helping anyone. Let's hope world leaders have a more measured approach than some GN members are currently displaying.

Callistemon Tue 07-Jan-20 13:57:42

jura Why would you be more worried about Iranian children rhan other children?

How many children had been killed by Soleimani? Did you weep for them? I did.
They are apparently celebrating in Idlib where many took refuge. Not all rebels belong to ISIS and the children there are innocents too.

trisher Tue 07-Jan-20 15:47:00

Possibly because more children have been killed as the result of western interference in the Middle East over the years than any where else Callistemon If you could explain to me how any of the chldren in Iran, Iraq or Syria will be safer as a result of the killing of General Suliemon I would be very grateful.

jura2 Tue 07-Jan-20 16:27:20

Callistemon, where did I say I worried more about Iranian children than others- or indeed my grandchildren. I said 'first' because they are, have been and will be, the first victims of USA bombs.

MerylStreep- we have not left yet- and certainly not left with NO Deal ... yet.

We have had stressful weeks as Brexit is already affecting us personally. First the uncertainty of exchange rates- as our only income is in Sterling. But in last couple of weeks- we find that we will be covered by health insurance in Switzerland and UK - but no longer any cover for rest of EU, including France on our doorstep. That means no more going shopping or walking, skiing in nearby France, no more driving to UK, no cover when we go to Italy, etc. We can't get Travel Insurance from UK as we are not residents- can't get cover from here as it doesn't exist (Swiss residents are covered in EU by their health insurance- from which we are exempt). And our Insurer is now refusing to renew our insurance for our UK flat- as they don't want to insure owners living in EU, due to Brexit.

Despite promises by Gove and others- Brits in EU are finding themselves in dire straigths through NO fault of their own, and despite very careful and informed planning. Yes, we do live on tenderhooks at the moment.

The US will not be bombing Iran. If, and I repeat if, there are targets or people the US want to take out, it will be done by drones.

jura2 Tue 07-Jan-20 16:34:49

There are just too many ignorant and ambitious fools in charge of armies, weapons and nuclear weapons at the moment. Let's hope you are right - anyone is not concerned is living in cuckoo land (and NO, cuckoos are NOT Swiss)

JenniferEccles Tue 07-Jan-20 16:39:45

There’s a difference between being concerned and ridiculous scaremongering .

I am sure most people are concerned but it’s very irresponsible to blow it all out of proportion by claiming we are on the verge of war.

jura2 Tue 07-Jan-20 16:42:36

Nobody knows - anything could happen. The development of new 'useable' nuclear weapons make a first strike so much more possible- and then ..

I certainly pray (in my own way) but YOU are right.

And today in Parliament, our so called Prime Minister is still no-where to be seen sad

jura2 Tue 07-Jan-20 17:08:39

GrannyGravy13 Tue 07-Jan-20 17:10:03

Hopefully jura2 he is in his office at No.10, having telephone conversations with World Leaders trying to soothe the current situation between Iran and USA.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 07-Jan-20 17:11:19

Ben Wallace is MP for Wyre and Preston North

Urmstongran Tue 07-Jan-20 17:33:17

I imagine Boris is getting to grips with the situation in Iran.

BW is the Defence Minister. He made mincemeat of JC this afternoon.

Thank you MerylStreep for some unknown reason only half of my post “posted” (I am such a technophobe)

''jura2

yes, all 3 on fron bench are unknown to most - this is the first day in Parliament - and the front bench looks like unknown newbies to the world. I would have expected that in such a difficult situation, both at home and abroad- you would have the PM facing the House and other well-known figures.

I think you missed your calling as a teacher. You should have been a lawyer. Every time your boxed into a corner you deflect onto something totally irrelevant.
Your only problem is: you think we are too stupid to see through it: Wrong!!!

prestbury Tue 07-Jan-20 17:57:04

Ben Wallace is also the Defence Secretary

I note that several posters routinely use the euphemism "take out" rather than assassinate or kill. Does it imply approval of assassination, which in this case may well have been contrary to both international and American law?

You can take out a munitions storage. You can take out an empty building.
