Two days into the New Year and Trump sets the whole of world peace into jeopardy There will be huge repercussions

Urmstongran I really don't know where you get your information from about Iran but a little balance might help. There are thousands of Iranians living and studying in the UK they are not terrorists. I have one friend who lived there for a short while and found the peple very welcoming. I have another friend who has just returned from a holiday in Iran and described it as the best and most amazing place she had ever visited and was welcomed everywhere. Do the Iranians hate the Americans? Well yes they do and with just cause. It was America that placed and supported the Shah of Iran. It was America that financed and supported Saddam Hussein and supplied him with the chemical weapons which he used to kill thousands of Iranians in the Iran-Iraq war. If it is a hot-bed of terrorism (and that's debatable most terrorism is financed by SaudiArabia and they don't like Iran) it is the direct result of US interference.

Thanks trisher it’s always good to hear an alternative viewpoint.

As a slight aside, but relevant to Trisher's informative post above, I note how the West gets hot under the collar about Iran, laying the blame for terrorist inspiration and outrages at their door where possible, but we are all happy to turn away when we see what the Saudis are doing to others, generally with weapons sold by the west. Anyone who thinks that getting rid of this general will defuse the situation is seriously deluded; he will be replaced immediately with any one of many keen to avenge his assassination.

Norah Fri 03-Jan-20 14:35:53

Audacious, what will be the retaliations?

trisher Fri 03-Jan-20 14:36:48

Actually this has set me looking at the info available. The BBC's information n US Iran relations makes absolutely no mention of the Iran-Iraq war. I did find this for anyone interested in how things have happened. It is an appalling condemnation of the US. Thousands of young Iranians died as the result of chemical weapons www.globalpolicy.org/component/content/article/169/36397.html

Norah Fri 03-Jan-20 14:39:19

Timing is strange, other plans to remove have not been concluded, why now?

trisher Fri 03-Jan-20 14:39:35

This quote from that article is horrifying
The Pentagon "wasn't so horrified by Iraq's use of gas," said one veteran of the program. "It was just another way of killing people -- whether with a bullet or phosgene, it didn't make any difference," he said
so much for international agreements..

Urmstongran Fri 03-Jan-20 14:58:33

I just Googled ‘why does Iran hate US’ and Wikipedia came up with a whole screed on tensions between Iran and Iraq ... starting in 1856.

I didn’t have the stamina to read on.

Urmstongran Fri 03-Jan-20 15:12:29

So this guy was where he claimed he was not, with people he claimed to not know, who just happened to be starting stuff in Iraq which they denied.

Killing them all together on Iraqi soil pretty much blows that alibi.

Iran got caught with their pants down doing what they always seem to get away with. Good day for the world.

inkycog Fri 03-Jan-20 15:16:50

Are you sort of enjoying this UG?

A good day? Caught with their pants down....Iran made their bed.

It truly is quite unbelievable.

It might look like some sort of video game but they are humans. The world is teetering on the brink.

maddyone Fri 03-Jan-20 15:19:55

When I was teaching I worked with some Iranians and found them all to be very pleasant and very ordinary people. My son has friends who are Iranian and we all get on well with them. I don’t think ordinary Iranians are the problem, it’s the rulers of Iran. It appears that the man who was killed yesterday was inciting terrorism and was apparently an absolutely vile man, or that was what was reported today.

Urmstongran Fri 03-Jan-20 15:50:39

Well said maddyone.

Nope I’m not enjoying this news Inkycog just giving my own opinion. As others do.

Urmstongran Fri 03-Jan-20 15:52:08

My first 2 paras were more insightful I thought. Shame you just picked up on the last one Inkycog!

trisher Fri 03-Jan-20 15:56:15

Mm there was a program about this man on TV some time ago. He was a military man and a bit of a military genius. Now I don't approve of militarism but neither do I applaud it for my own country but condemn it in others.
This is an interesting video. Although he had been active against the US he was also responsible for fighting Islamic State. As IS are funded by Saudi Arabia you have to wonder.....?

I read it all and thought about it all. I find it to be full of huge sweeping generalisations and mis information.

" starting stuff"..... The whole region is fraught with very complex, long standing issues. I think it's terrifying not a Good day for the world.

Luckygirl Fri 03-Jan-20 16:01:15

My worry is that UK will be drawn in, as Boris will be so keen to strike trade deals with US, so we will be open to manipulation. I makes me shiver.

Riverwalk Fri 03-Jan-20 16:06:25

This killing is a godsend to the Iranian regime - they love to have outside enemies. Along with other countries in the ME there have been many demonstrations by ordinary people against the government, and many have been killed in the streets in the past few months.

How can they now dare demonstrate - they'll be seen as traitors.

Trump's action will strengthen the hand of the hardliners I fear, rather than lead to its downfall.

Oh, and it's election year in the US - every president needs a good war.

trisher Fri 03-Jan-20 16:14:11

And it's never about oil is it?

quizqueen Fri 03-Jan-20 16:19:14

How is the President of the USA supposed to react when it's embassy and staff are attacked...just say, 'Whoops, never mind perhaps they won't do anything again if we ignore them'. Iran is the enemy here, and Iran is the one looking for a fight.

Chewbacca Fri 03-Jan-20 16:19:46

My heart sank when I saw the news. Another fine mess Trump has got the world into.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 03-Jan-20 16:23:09

I like to think that if the UK Embassy was attacked that we would retaliate.
Not doing anything sends the message that a Country is weak.

Callistemon Fri 03-Jan-20 16:25:59

This is to deflect attention from the bad publicity attending his impeachment and forthcoming trial.
That is a very interesting point ybnb

Grany Fri 03-Jan-20 16:57:41

Jeremy Corbyn

The US assassination of Qasem Soleimani is an extremely serious and dangerous escalation of conflict with global significance. The UK government should urge restraint on the part of both Iran and the US, and stand up to the belligerent actions and rhetoric coming from the US.

Angela Rayner ?

The PM must at least get off his Sun lounger to make some kind of statement on the US attack killing the senior Iranian general and the escalating dangerous situation between Iran and the USA. Leaving it to the hapless Dominic Raab will not suffice ?

JenniferEccles Fri 03-Jan-20 17:11:56

I thought it was widely believed that Trump’s impeachment would actually strengthen his support rather than to have a negative effect on it.

Not what the Democrats had hoped for I’m sure.

grannyactivist Fri 03-Jan-20 18:35:05

Well let’s put this fight in the playground. When two belligerent children get in a fight with each other do we stand on the sidelines egging them on, or do we pull them apart and encourage them to seek solutions to their differences?
