Two days into the New Year and Trump sets the whole of world peace into jeopardy There will be huge repercussions

Whilst this is very scary to say the least.
Please remember that Iran stones women, hangs young gay men from 50’ cranes with the crowd cheering.

It is a brutal regime and is responsible for thousands of deaths.

Iranians attacked the US Embassy, any US President would have to respond in this situation.

So is Saudi- but we all seem very happy to be their friends, somehow? I wonder (not) what the difference is.

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 12:23:53

I don’t mind admitting my naïveté on this subject jura. I can only go off what I read and all reporting and analysis takes its own slant in the end.

It’s a horrible, repressive, patriarchal and mediaeval culture.

They think we are infidels and want to kill us in the West as we are non believers, capitalists and without modesty or morals. I agree with you GG13 about the atrocities committed there. They are barbaric punishments.

Which is why I say, leave them to it. They will fight, as they have done, over the centuries. Religious fanaticism has a lot to answer for. The ayatollahs are in power and absolute power corrupts.

I don’t know the answer. Does anyone? How do you reason with those who don’t want to engage? Sanctions bite up to a point.

Some British forces share bases with the US in the middle east, President Trump has put British soldiers at risk without even having the decency to mention his intentions to our Government before his action.
We may become involved whether we wanted to or not.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 04-Jan-20 12:29:38

In my opinion- Saudi has always been an oppressive regime.

Iran was an open free society until
1979 when the Islamic revolution changed things virtually overnight.

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 12:30:24

Arrghhh - but we will not be allowed to 'leave them to it' ...Trump will want us to get involved, want to use our bases - Cyprus first.

You have not replied btw about Saudi- why are they our 'friends' despite their equally appalling treatment of those that don't fit the system?

GrannyGravy13 Sat 04-Jan-20 12:33:11

ilovecheese as the UK has hi-tech efficient “listening stations” worldwide which are extremely effective It would be surprising if those “at the top” were not aware even if they had not been officially informed.

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 12:33:37

Sorry jura I didn’t realise the Saudi question was directed at me. I thought it was an open comment for anyone to respond to!

I suppose the easy answer is money? Oil and arms.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 04-Jan-20 12:35:09

It is called diplomacy jura2 keep your friends close but keep your enemies even closer.

Callistemon Sat 04-Jan-20 12:38:17

Trump's just blown that then, hasn't he!

He should have read your sound advice first GrannyGravy13, but then you probably have more sense than him.

(that's not sarcastic, btw, I mean it)

GrannyGravy13 Sat 04-Jan-20 12:45:07

No worries Callistemon

It’s a very sensitive and serious situation, I have mixed views after reading up on this General he was responsible for loss of thousands of lives across the Middle East.

It is difficult for the West to understand the mindset of rulers of Arab nations.

trisher Sat 04-Jan-20 12:45:59

GranyGravy13 That just isn't true. The amount of torture and killing under the Shah has been debated. Some say there was more political repression then. It's never been an open society.

trisher Sat 04-Jan-20 12:49:06

He was GrannyGravy13 but some of the people he killed were Islamic State fighters. You know the ones lots of people on GN go on about having their British Citizenship revoked. The ones who tried to take over Syria. They will probably be celebrating along with the Americans-weird isn't it?

MerylStreep Sat 04-Jan-20 12:52:18

trisha
I think is irrelevant as to who killed the most. The point is: they were both Iranians ( for the pendants I probably should have named these evil bastards and not used they)

Ilovecheese Sat 04-Jan-20 13:11:01

Grannygravy13 Listening stations or not, our Govt should have been officially informed of an intention to commit an action that could put British soldiers in danger.

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 14:10:24

It is called diplomacy jura2 keep your friends close but keep your enemies even closer.

so... is that you our Government was not warned of his actions or consulted??? Diplomay my foot sad

Some years ago I worked with several people from Middle Eastern countries. We had many discussions regarding the differing attitudes between our cultures.

Whilst we in the West tend to lean towards negotiation and talks, in many Middle Eastern countries that is looked upon as a weakness to be exploited.

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 15:54:21

So- you just go for full on WW3 then?!?

inkycog Sat 04-Jan-20 16:04:59

I don't suppose anybody is interested ,but my question about the use of " they" was not a nit picking pedantry.

I feel nervous when sweeping generalisations are made.

WadesNan Sat 04-Jan-20 16:10:54

No - I am saying you shouldn't be surprised that those from other cultures have different attitudes which should be taken into account when dealing with them.

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 16:11:14

It was used in other wars- like 'they' or 'Gerry' in Germany, to de-humanise people, children, women, grannies ...

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 16:12:01

and then ... Wadesnan?

GrandmaTrisha Sat 04-Jan-20 16:12:22

My DS is currently at the beginning of a seven month deployment with the army in Iraq. What was going to be a somewhat 'average' tour has now turned into a nightmare & I can't sleep at night for worrying about him and the whole volatile situation out there.

Add to this that my DIL and grandchildren ( his wife) have had to flee from their home in Australia and it's been a great start to our new year. Their PM should have done something about those fires months ago.

I can barely contain my anger at these two thoughtless men that have put my family in such great danger.

WadesNan Sat 04-Jan-20 16:17:49

jura you have to take into account different cultures and different attitudes if you are to understand your enemy - something I am sure America's enemies do.
