Two days into the New Year and Trump sets the whole of world peace into jeopardy There will be huge repercussions

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 16:21:33

and then? Don't you have to take into account those differences when it comes to consequences and their likely response- with the finger on the nuclear button and our forces and massive danger so close to Europe and UK.

I certainly would not go to Cyprus now due to this poor girl's ordeal- but also due to such close proximity to Syria.

GrandmaTrisha, I am so sorry to hear. I was thinking in replying above about how worried anyone with loved ones in the forces must be.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 04-Jan-20 16:44:01

We are going to Cyprus in May as usual.

We are an army family so well aware of risks /circumstances.

inkycog Sat 04-Jan-20 17:11:55

Well ain't that fine and dandy.

Chewbacca Sat 04-Jan-20 17:33:05

confused ?

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 17:36:32

I don’t think that was called for indycog. Honestly you do seem to revel in your acerbic one-liners don’t you?

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 17:44:19

WadesNan thank you for sharing what your Middle Eastern friends say. I have read about negotiation being regarded as a weakness and your comment has backed this up.

Obama gave pallet loads of dollars to Iran to keep them sweet. It rarely pays to suck up to bullies.

GrandmaTrisha I can understand your anxiety and fury. We all love our children. A career in the Armed Forces isn’t an easy decision and we owe our lives (literally) to these very brave men and women. I hope this situation calms down or at the very least is target specific (as in this drone attack) enabling as little loss of life as possible for the ongoing conflict.

jura I read that the FO will have been aware of the unfolding situation even though they weren’t informed officially through diplomatic channels.

Granygravy
Cyprus in May, fine and dandy ??

Iran’s most likely response will be terrorism against US citizens and their allies.
A direct response against US or Allied assets would provoke a response from the US probably starting a full scale war. Iran would not want that because the US could do massive damage easily and Trump would be crazy enough to order it.

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 18:26:46

Oh the irony - Chanting ‘death to America’ whilst driving an American vehicle. A Chevrolet.

growstuff Sat 04-Jan-20 18:28:09

Pompeo is trying to goad France, Germany and the UK into being more pro-active:

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jan/04/mike-pompeo-european-response-to-suleimani-killing

Let's watch how our media responds to this.

growstuff Sat 04-Jan-20 18:30:17

Don't fall for having hatred whipped up Urmstongran.

I doubt if my own children will be conscripted, but somebody else's children might very well be sent off to a war which isn't of our making - and not come back.

growstuff Sat 04-Jan-20 18:31:55

They were driving a Chevrolet because the US needs export markets and the Chevrolet factory will have made a profit and employed workers.

maddyone Sat 04-Jan-20 18:46:41

Thanks for that link growstuff, to my mind this situation is beyond frightening. We should not be goaded into taking part in a war. We’ve had enough that already. America didn’t join in WW2 until they were attacked on their own soil, despite Britain repeatedly asking for help and support. It then took us until 2006 to repay the USA for the arms we bought from them. No favours for friends there then.
I hope and pray that we don’t join in, this is America’s situation.

I just despair of Trump I think he must have a brain missing. He just went ahead and now expects us and Europe to back him, he didn't discuss it with us first.

At least JC has condemned his actions, where is good old Boris in all this and what does he think.

growstuff Sat 04-Jan-20 19:39:19

I agree 100% maddyone. I glanced at the newspaper headlines in Tesco and it would appear we're being prepped for war. On of them (Daily Mail or Express) had something about being braced for war, as though it's inevitable. The spin is that Iran was the aggressor. I'd like to think we're the "adult in the playground", but I'm not optimistic.

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 19:59:03

I’m probably being naive again (just as jura she knows me well!?) but as ever the optimist, I don’t think this will be WW3. Tit for tat retaliation I expect, maybe escalating, but targeted responses.

I wonder if Boris is keeping a low profile on all this since that debacle over the Iranian woman (sorry can’t recall her name ? Nazanin) jailed by the Iranians? He’s probably been advised that ‘less is more’ right now.

growstuff Sat 04-Jan-20 20:44:31

The fact is Urmstongran is that you have no more of a clue about what will happen than any of us do.

Hopefully, Johnson is taking some advice from the Foreign Office and security services and is actually listening.

BTW The "debacle" over Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is ongoing.

trisher Sat 04-Jan-20 20:46:35

Urmstongran Obama gave pallet loads of dollars to Iran to keep them sweet. It rarely pays to suck up to bullies.
One of the conventions used and respected in the ME is bribery, it keeps the whole system running at every level. Obama was probaby recognsed as just using the system.

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 21:14:09

I do realise both points growstuff but thank you.
?

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 21:16:44

Yep, I get that trisher but placatory political bribes haven’t cut the mustard in the end here have they? Iran pushed their luck. Maybe they thought Trump would play ball like Obama.

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 21:30:14

...and you are prepared for innocents and our children and grandchildren to pay ...

do you have c and GC in the forces btw?

b1zzle Sat 04-Jan-20 21:33:54

You ask, 'What was he thinking?' He doesn't think!

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 21:44:27

No I don’t jura. Your insinuation however is distasteful.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 04-Jan-20 21:48:12

jura2 I have AC in the forces and would be happy for GC to “join up”

Hysterics and hyperbole is endemic on GN political threads
