Two days into the New Year and Trump sets the whole of world peace into jeopardy There will be huge repercussions

Why's it distasteful? I wouldn't be happy for any young person in my family to join up and be sent off to a pointless war, caused by somebody sitting in his holiday home in Florida.

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 21:58:41

Thank you for that timely validation GG13 much appreciated.

Chewbacca Sat 04-Jan-20 22:04:40

do you have c and GC in the forces btw?

What a distasteful comment to make in view of the current situation. Those of us who do have loved ones in the armed forces are acutely aware of the constant danger they are in and we worry about them 24/7/365. We also know that, without them, we wouldn't have the security that we currently have. So please, stop with your cheap, point scoring jibes and show some respect for the families of the men and women who put their own lives at risk for all of us. angry

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 22:05:22

Indeed growstuff. But I was talking about all our children and grandchildren, not 'just' those in the forces. This is a really dangerous situation for the whole world.

merlotgran Sat 04-Jan-20 22:11:23

growstuff You are insulting young people who choose a career in the armed forces. It's not just 'joining up'. That's a very outdated view.

lemongrove Sat 04-Jan-20 22:11:42

Well said Chewbacca ??
There won’t be a ‘war’.....the leaders in Iran aren’t stupid and won’t risk a war with the US.
There will be some terrorist attacks in whichever country they find the easiest targets no doubt.
GG13 yes, hysteria and hyperbole on GN ( the two haitches)

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 22:16:35

how is growstuff insulting anyone- totally the opposite- showing great concern for them.

Was it hysteria when people were so concerned about being dragged into the Irak war - and what happened to our poor men and women?

merlotgran Sat 04-Jan-20 22:20:29

Everyone is concerned.

Chewbacca Sat 04-Jan-20 22:20:35

It wasn't growstuff's post that I found distasteful jura. It was yours.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 04-Jan-20 22:22:48

jura2 our AC was deployed in Iraq twice, at the beginning and also at the end.

Some posters here experience things others read about things.

Chewbacca Sat 04-Jan-20 22:23:16

Exactly so merlot; but from reading this thread you'd think that concern, worry about the future and our families, is affecting just one person. It's not.

growstuff Sat 04-Jan-20 22:25:57

Why is it distasteful? Sorry, but I'm missing the point. What's it called if not "joining up"?

I'm not insulting anybody who is in the armed forces or who has relatives in the armed forces.

However, I wouldn't be happy for my own children to be sent off to a war zone, where they would have a high chance of being killed, especially one which had been created by a madman in a Florida holiday home.

If the UK does end up going to war, it will have been one which could have been avoided and the country's involvement will be unnecessary.

growstuff Sat 04-Jan-20 22:27:00

Cheap, point scoring jibes? What???

Chewbacca Sat 04-Jan-20 22:27:47

It's called "enlisting to the forces". Hth.

growstuff Sat 04-Jan-20 22:28:58

Oh right! I'll remember that for next time.

inkycog Sat 04-Jan-20 22:31:01

It's a job? the forces?

merlotgran Sat 04-Jan-20 22:36:01

It's a job? the forces?

Explain your post please, inkycog

inkycog Sat 04-Jan-20 22:38:38

It's a job, a choice and when you enlist you are fully aware of the role, responsibilities and pay.

It's not the same as a conscript.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 04-Jan-20 22:41:47

I get so flipping cross that the general public of the UK are not proud of their armed forces.

In the USA their forces personnel are allowed to wear their uniforms wherever/whenever they wish, get free transport and upgrades and are respected.

In the UK all of our service personnel are advised and often prohibited from wearing their uniforms outside of bases and in public transportation, due to abuse and risk of assaults.

merlotgran Sat 04-Jan-20 22:49:20

So why the ?

Of course it's a job.

trisher Sat 04-Jan-20 22:53:58

I'm sorry for the armed forces but I don't see why I should be proud of them. They chose to join up, in doing so they enabled governments to wage war in places where they had no right to be. Those wars killed thousands of innocent people and continue to do so. They also sowed the seeds of terrorism which threaten our homes and streets. They haven't in fact kept me safe they have made life more unsafe.
Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self-defense against a homicidal maniac.”
― George Orwell

Callistemon Sat 04-Jan-20 22:54:34

growstuff they were driving a Chevrolet because the US needs export markets

Yes, but it was the irony of driving a Chevrolet and shouting 'death to America' which struck me about that post.

Especially since Iran has it's own automotive industry too.

Callistemon Sat 04-Jan-20 22:54:55

its

Opal Sat 04-Jan-20 22:55:33

GG13 take heart, I think the majority of the British public are very proud of their armed service personnel, and hold them in very high esteem. They should be encouraged to wear their uniform proudly, I would certainly show my appreciation whenever I saw them. Is it the official line that they shouldn't wear uniform when out and about in public?

Opal Sat 04-Jan-20 23:00:30

trisher your post is at best objectionable, at worse bloody insulting. If it wasn't for our armed forces, your life would be nothing like it is now, shame on you.
