So, trisher, You would be happy to live in a country with no security, no intelligence, no support in times of natural or unnatural disasters, no protection whatsoever?
Utopia?

Danger man Trump strikes again
(486 Posts)Two days into the New Year and Trump sets the whole of world peace into jeopardy There will be huge repercussions
It's politicians who wage war trisher.
Our Forces are there for defence, not aggression.
Politicians decide where they need to be sent, not the Forces themselves.
It is politicians who make life more unsafe by their decisions.
Our Forces are deployed worldwide to help people in disaster zones too and those people suffering are thankful to see them.
Especially since so many charity workers have been found to take advantage of those suffering from the after-effects of natural disasters.
Who would I want to rescue me from an earthquake, a flood, a cyclone? Service personnel or someone from Oxfam?
I know which I would choose.
I hope the majority of people are proud of our armed forces, I certainly am. They do a wonderful job and should be treated with the respect they deserve.
If not proud, perhaps Trisher you could be grateful?
Urmstongran and trisher President Obama did not give money – pallet-loads or otherwise – to Iran. He authorised the release of Iranian funds that had been frozen in the time of the Shah. That particular calumny has been circulated throughout social media on and off for some time. It is highly popular among the GOP, right-wing networks and a favourite of Donald Trump's – but it is not true.
"It is politicians who make life more unsafe by their decisions."
I agree with you absolutely Callistemon. I have every admiration for the men and women who enlist in the forces and fulfil some very difficult roles.
I just can't imagine how anybody would actually be "happy" if their children are sent off to a war zone because some screwball, who happens to be POTUS, thought it was a good idea.
Nobody is 'happy' if their children or grandchildren are sent off to a war zone. Why on earth would they be?
We already have troops in the region, but they are there to train, help and advise.
Our troops cannot be sent anywhere by a POTUS.
Absolutely correct growstuff, the politicians cause wars for others to fight. Like you and others on here I admire our armed forces and as far as I understand, they are highly trained and very professional. One of my sons considered joining the Air Force after he left university, but in the end he didn’t. When the Bush/Blair Iraqi war happened, I was so very relieved that he didn’t join up, and that made me feel so much more for the parents and relatives of those who were out there.
I don’t believe anyone is happy when their adult child is sent off to war, particularly when the instigator is American and wants our support in their war. Nonetheless our armed service men and women act responsibly and professionally as they go off to fight other people’s wars.
Blair was so anxious to be Bush's best friend and the consequences have been horrendous.
Cameron wanted to send troops into Syria but did not get the backing of MPs.
Peace in the Middle East is a forlorn hope and has been thus for centuries - I do not understand why our politicians want us to get involved.
Moving away from our dependence on oil will be a good thing in more ways than one.
Callistemon, you’re right of course, only a British Prime Minister can commit our armed forces to fight in a war, but after Blair joined forces with Bush, and agreed to provide British support in Iraq and then Afghanistan, it isn’t surprising that many British people think that the American President is the one who decides when and where wars will be fought, and it seems that the American President usually wants British support in these ventures. Most British people don’t want to become involved in America’s wars.
Trump is doing what many leaders do when their careers are at risk - they start a war, and, sadly, many people fall for this dangerous ploy because it is dressed up as patriotism.
Apart from the impeachment issue, Trump has lost a great deal of support from people in rural communities who form a significant part of his support group.
From the website Politico, June 2019, and widely reported elsewhere:
"President Donald Trump’s trade war is magnifying some of the toughest farm conditions since the crisis that bankrupted thousands of farmers in the 1980s — and threatening a constituency crucial to his re-election hopes.
The president’s trade policies have sent U.S. agricultural exports plunging, exacerbating already difficult economic conditions facing farmers. Average farm income has fallen to near 15-year lows under Trump, and in some areas of the country, farm bankruptcies are soaring.
The fate of the farm economy and rural America is fused to Trump’s political future. Farmers and ranchers make up the heart of his base, and their support in battleground Midwestern states like Iowa and Wisconsin could help determine the 2020 presidential election. Although Trump’s standing with those groups generally remains strong, cracks are starting to show."
So, time to create a (very dangerous) distraction - from the man who claims to "Put America First".
Right again Callistemon, Blair wanted to be Bush’s best friend.
I think we crossed posts on our last posts.
I'm sorry for the armed forces but I don't see why I should be proud of them
Words fail me trisher. Your post is one of the most depressingly ill informed, ignorant posts I've ever seen on GN. Apart from peacekeeping and providing humanitarian aid both domestic and overseas, they are involved with fighting international drug cartels, help to put out fires on moorlands and other emergencies, assist with bomb disposal and terrorist attacks. They provide you, all of us, with security and peace. They're not just an armed combat fighting force. And you're not proud of that? Then shame on you.
Well said Chewbacca
Living in a democracy, people are free to express their views, of course as trisher does.
Our Armed Forces are ones to be proud of.
I do realise that in some countries the military are not a benign defence force on the side of their own people so we should be thankful.
Whatever his faults, and heaven knows there are many, I don’t believe Trump is a warmonger. One thing he has been consistent about over the years of his presidency is America not being the world’s policeman and expending vast amounts of money & manpower on overseas missions. Remember that he’s even pondered leaving NATO because he doesn’t feel it serves America’s interests well and that his country is being exploited by their allies.
Whether that is right or wrong and whether this latest action, which I assume is meant to contain Iran, works remains to be seen. He doesn’t want to put any more American boots on the ground anywhere round the world if he can help it and he wants to withdraw totally from the ME. and certainly not put forces into Iran so I think and hope it unlikely we will go to war over this.
He's already sent an extra 3,000 US troops to the ME.
It would be very difficult to withdraw ours just now.
He has indeed, to protect his forces there, but he’s said time and again he wants America feet off foreign soil. I have no time for the man but I don’t think he wants war.
1953 Iranian coup d'état
I hope you're right SueDonim not it's not what people such as politicians, diplomats and commentators in the US and around the world are saying.
Frankly, I don't have much faith in anything Trump says.
I hope I’m right, too, Growstuff. The BBC doesn’t see it as a declaration of war, although there’s always the law of unintended consequences to be concerned about.

Trump is not only a warmonger but a total idiot too if someone doesn’t put the dangerous twittering idiot behind bars soon we ve had it
Bill Clinton did it when impeached and this is déjà vu Wag the Dog. It seems that there is nothing new under the sun. I truly wish politicians would overcome this desire for a "good war" to ensure re-election – or at least define what is good about any war.
